    997 S, lack of power?

    What do you think?
I went today for another test drive with a 997S.... hoping to have rain so I could see how the car is on slippery surface, but no luck as I only came accross dry roads
Anyway, I went on a small mountain pass that has a wide road, exellent tarmac, fast curves, one hairpin, a few staight lines... I know it by heart as I have been going up and down that mountain hundreds of time with my motorbikes.
Sometimes comming out of meedium slow curbes ( about 80 km/h) and going into a straight line ( before a next fast curve) I found that my foot was pushing the max on the gas pedal, the engine was in hight rews..and I had time to get bored!!!! I was wanting MORE POWER... but the car could'nt give me any more ( the car is pretty new...I will not say how much km.. you would kill me ).
Does anyone sometimes feel he would like to have more power?
Maybe the TT would be more apropriate? but so much more costly..

Re: 997 S, lack of power?

Your up high in the mountains, a turbo or supercharger would be better for you.

Re: 997 S, lack of power?

may i ask if ur car is auto or manual?

Good point. Hey gnil, what is the elevation there in your part of Switzerland?

Re: 997 S, lack of power?

If you're used to sport bikes, ANY car is too slow

Well, except this one maybe, but I hear it sucks in curves...

I agree with that ! Keep your bike if you can. No comparison.

Re: 997 S, lack of power?

I found out my 986s to feel out of power when going really high (Nufenen 2458m or abput 8000feet)...didn't feel that effect with a turbo car before...but I know what you mean...

Re: 997 S, lack of power?

Isn't there a different motronics setting avail for high altitudes? Does the engine sense this and reset itself? Maybe I'm dreaming but I thought I read this somewhere. Sorry if this is absurd.

One thing that you can do, for possible cure for your symptoms, is to head DOWN the mountain and simulate the effects of a massive HP gain.

Maybe it is supposed too, but clearly, I feel a loss of power above 2000m...

Re: 997 S, lack of power?

    The car was a manual....
I know what you mean by loosing power because of high altitude, but this was a small pass ( only about 1200m called le Molendru). So..it was not the lack of oxygen/pression problem... there was no problem...just that I found the car not fast enough
As it has been said...once you are used to the power and acceleration of a sports motorbike, it is hard to get the same feeling with a car I guess that is what I was hoping/ looking for..) I never should of driven these damm bikes!!!!! Should of stayed on scooters!
I will install some helicopter turbines on the side of my 997C4S when I get it. Hope I will still manage to take corners
Anyway...the car is a jewel to drive, I love the feeling I can get in it around every corner... but I wonder how it would feel with a TT

still not even close to a sportbike you won't get that acceleration feeling even with a CGT, bikes are bikes and cars are cars... don't try to get from one what you get from the other... you just have to make it up in the bends what you loose in the straights

Re: 997 S, lack of power?

Sounds like you're having a blast gnil!

    Please be careful!

Are you running the wheels off the test cars, so when you get your baby you'll have less of a need for speed?

Yea a good friend of mine was a big car fan...untill the day he got a bike (R1). Then his impressions went something like this:

M3: "Meh, kinda slow, was looking for some kick"
996C42: "Yawn, so this is a Porsche?"

The only cars that do anything for him now are an old Maserati Quatropporte (damn that thing is scary to drive in, its just pure kick) and a 911TT. We were launching down a road, hitting 80 in 2nd, punishing our necks h

Re: 997 S, lack of power?

I stay away from Motorbikes, not because of that experience but I would probably take too much risks...

The Carrera only shines between 4500 RPM and redline, if this is still not enough for you than better go with something faster.
Or just take the turns much faster...

Re: 997 S, lack of power?

    Hello all -

I can tell you for a fact that a normally aspirated car looses significant horsepower at altitude. Before moving to China (long story), I lived in Boulder, Colorado (about 5300 ft) with a 2001 996 TT.

At sea level, the car was of course very fast. It seemed to take a couple of days in Colorado to remap its systems and restore power to what it should be - and even then, the power was never quite the same. I also owned an S2000 that really struggled above 6000 or 7000 feet.

Disappointed, I did some research and talked to local tuners. In a nutshell, normally aspirated engines lose something like 5% of their HP per thousand feet of elevation, due to the lower air density, and thus lower oxygen density. This percentage varies with the sophistication of the car's engine management system, but is undeniable.

Turbo and supercharged cars do, to a great extent, overcome this by pressurizing the intake air to restore appropriate pressure at the intake manifold. The only real difference I noticed was that the turbo "rubber band" effect became much more pronounced (almost brutal) as the TT went from abnormally low HP to normal HP. Quite a thrill.

So, anyway, buy a turbo at altitude. Even at 1200 m elevation, you were driving an "S" that was 10-20% short on HP.

    Good luck!

    PTM

Re: 997 S, lack of power?

I have sold the motorbike as I was going too fast (too many risks now that I have a family and too many speed traps....)
The 997 C4S will be give me plenty of pleasure , I am sure.
Maybe I should consider going regularly on a track. Today, in front of the Porsche garage I saw a truck unloading the local P club's cars ( they had gone to a 3 day track event in the Nederlands).... GT3, GTS RS, TT, ... Looked very tempting!
