Actually, it REALLY sounds like a trumpet!
Especially in the video where the car takes the turn.
    RC,
If that's what you mean with the PSE, then I'm gonna question my order! Seriously!
Problem is that is comes with X51, so I'll have to check if one can order X51 without PSE.
Please Christian, tell me PSE doesn't sound like this!

A Trumpet. Your trumpets must be different in the states compared with UK

Judging by the tone of your answer, I presume you're getting one!
Firstly I'm not in the US, I'm in the UK but not Brit.
Secondly, please don't take this wrong, a sound is entirely subjective, you can like it and that's cool, but in the second video, it sounds quite bad IMO, in the first one (the standing start) it's promising.
The noise that exhasut is not as raspy and throaty as the PSE (996) and, yes, I confirm my statement, has that trumpet sound.
PSE on 996 sounds miles better.
Let's just hope that the 997 "trumpet" sound the PSE makes is nothing like this exhaust!
    RC, could you confirm please?
    Thanks.

Re: Porsche Sport Exhaust - review and pictures

Francois, it is really difficult to hear the REAL sound from a video file only.
I try to take a video with a high quality Dolby 5.1 sound, maybe you get an idea of the exhaust.
And I suppose the exhaust in the video has the same "problem": it is brandnew and it surely will change sound as soon as it is "broken in".

BTW: the exhaust in the video wouldn't be street legal in most European states, just for the book.
This is another advantage of the PSE, you can manipulate the loudness, just in case the police asks you to have it checked by the technical authoroties.

Referring to Dillinger: yes, the "old" PSE sounded a lot like the well known air cooled 911 sound. The new PSE (997) sounds a bit different though but I really hope it has something to do with braking it in (or burning it out... ).

Re: Porsche Sport Exhaust - review and pictures

i sure hope too also RC

    Not with your modification!

    Re the exhaust,
    Thanks for the clarification man.

Re: Porsche Sport Exhaust - review and pictures

    Appreciate your objective communiqué.

Re: Porsche Sport Exhaust - review and pictures

I've got the PSE on mine and believe me it sounds lovely and burbbly (is that a word?) at tickover and throaty higher up the range. It is not excessively loud. I have done the patented RC conversion so it is always on.

Don't know but it surely sounds good!

Re: PORSCHE SPORT EXHAUST - review and pictures

does any one know if the PSE ads any weight when compared to the stanard exhaust? I do track days and weight saving is importnat... anyone?

Re: PORSCHE SPORT EXHAUST - review and pictures

I just ordered a 997s and did not opt for the PSE. Seemed like a lot of money for a little louder sound and different tips. What am I missing? Did I make a mistake not ordering this? I also did not order the Sport Shifter.

There are a lot of comments on this board heavily in favor of both options. In fact, I'll be ordering the retrofits for both on Monday. Get them both. You'll be happy you did, unless you're trying to keep the costs down on your purchase.

Read the many posts about this option you'll see...

Re: PORSCHE SPORT EXHAUST - review and pictures

Spicy or not spicy, your 911 ?

Re: PORSCHE SPORT EXHAUST - review and pictures

I definately like the spice, i just don't want it to be too hot to where i don't enjoy the taste of it. I am coming out of a BMW M3 and the transmission sucks. Very hard to shift smoothly unless you are getting on it. So it does not make a very nice car for cruising, only haulin ass. I liked the SS in the 996TT, but there it is needed. With the already reduced throw, is it needed. Will it be hard to shift, that is the question, b/c I def. don't want it to be race car stiff, but, if it still shifts like the stock unit only better, than I am all in.

Re: PORSCHE SPORT EXHAUST - review and pictures

One more question, what about the PSE, get it or not? Car has nice sound, is it that much better?

Re: PORSCHE SPORT EXHAUST - review and pictures

You should be able to find posts with files of the PSE sound on previous posts...

Re: PORSCHE SPORT EXHAUST - review and pictures

welll a "trumpet" sound... dunno if it is worth the extra $4k?

Re: PORSCHE SPORT EXHAUST - review and pictures

    Great Picture!
What do you think of the exhaust? Just had mine retrofitted but I'm finding it disappointing - not as loud as the 996 SE and switches itself off below 45mph when you accelerate.

You need to do the PSE modification:

Re: PORSCHE SPORT EXHAUST - review and pictures

sounds kinda weak if you ask me

Re: Porsche Sport Exhaust - review and pictures

    hi everyone,

today i talked to my local dealer service. and i have asked them to order a porsche sport exhaust for my 997s, but unfortunately they still do not know how my sport button on the dashboard is going to be connected with the new exhaust system as an on/off switch. is it a hard job to accomplish? or is it possible at all?

Re: Porsche Sport Exhaust - review and pictures

i had mine retrofitted, it's a little different when your car doesn't have the sport chrono system. otherwise very do-able, depending on how experienced your dealer is with the system it can take anywhere from 3-4 hours up to a whole day and a overnighter

Re: Porsche Sport Exhaust - review and pictures

mike you mean that since i have the sport chrono system, the switch function will be connected automatically after the installation of the porsche sport exhaust?

Yes. Once the PSE is installed it will be connected to the SPORT button. Pressing SPORT will turn on the PSE.

So how does the tone differ on the PSE to the stock with it turned off ..

    Thanks in advance..

When the PSE is turned off, you just have the standard 997S exhaust noise, pretty good already!

I'll second that opinion. I had my 997S w/o PSE for 8 months and then installed the PSE. "PSE off" sounds exactly like my 997S before the retrofit. Although, "PSE on" now makes "PSE off" sound kind of like a vacuum cleaner.

Re: Porsche Sport Exhaust - review and pictures

"Interesting is also the fact that there is a second pipe on the muffler, so this isn't a simple louder original exhaust." - RC

    Hi Mr RC,
You mentioned about this secondary pipe in your earlier post but did not elaborate further. Could you shed some light on the significance for the variation?
    Thanks

Re: Porsche Sport Exhaust - review and pictures

Avant, I'll take the liberty to answer since RC is on vacation. The original muffler of the 997S has two exhaust tips but they are in reality one exhaust pipe that divides into two, its a "fake" quad exhaust. On the Sport Exhaust however, the two exhaust pipes are for real, they are really two tips comming out separately from the muffler on each side. Actually the inner smaller pipe of the Sport Exhaust is activated when the exhaust in on ON mode, when the PSE is off, only the larger lateral pipe is working.
