Lugging an engine with a tiptronic?

Can one cause an engine to lug with a tiptronic (e.g. cruising at a low rpm with a high gear)?

I don't think the transmission's computer would allow it. It would automatically command a downshift as a remedy.

Re: Lugging an engine with a tiptronic?

What's amazing to me is comparing the computer's idea of lugging and my idea of lugging.

My M3 with software-updated SMG will run itself at 1100 rpm in a high gear. A gear and RPM that I would NEVER choose with a manual.

    Something to ponder.

Although I think a tiptronic system is a bit different from a sequential manual...For example, in a tip, if you bring the car close to redline it will automatically shift up for you, as well as if you floor it at low rpm, mid gear, it will downshift for you to accomodate your inability to understand the laws of torque...

Re: Lugging an engine with a tiptronic?

SMG in the "automatic" mode was what I was talking about. It will choose gears and RPMs combinations for you that most people would probably think were lugging the engine if they did it themselves.

Re: Lugging an engine with a tiptronic?

cruising at 1100 rpm in a M3 is an idea only a software can have
    still love this gearbox...

Surely "lugging" means running an engine under load (open throttle) in a high gear at very low revs, not just in overrun or idling mode.
As soon as you opened the throttle of an SMG box car at 1100 rpm, it would "automatically" shift down a gear or two?

Right, right, thanks for the clarification, good. I guess what I'm really saying is most guys will cruise at higher RPMs than necessary. The M3 surprised me by "choosing" such a high gear and low RPM while crusing. Yes, when you give it throttle it will downshift.

I guess that would be the ideal way to cruise with a manual. If you want to accelerate you should first be downshifting, otherwise you were crusing at too high RPM? If you don't downshift and accelerate the engine should be immediately lugging (if not, again, you were crusing at too high an RPM).

Everybody is always asking about ideal crusing RPMS and that's a good objective standard don't you think? Apparently the M3 software espouses it.

Re: Lugging an engine with a tiptronic?

The funny thing is the computer will shift down one gear or two for you 90% of the time. I am not sure if any of you have encountered instances where the gear will, for example, stay with 4th when you press the gas pedal and the car accelerates slowly. Will this be similar to a lugging situation.

I doubt it but I should never say no.
I'm actually surprised of how well the Tiptronic works on the 997/987 and I have to confess that I would not use the manual mode but always the auto mode.
I drove a tiptronic equipped 997 Carrera for a day and I loved it. Same with my wife's Boxster S, absolutely great setup, no lag, very responsive and logical shifting.
For some people, the sport chrono setup may be a little bit too uncomfortable (keepin a lower gear for a longer time, downshifting faster) but it really works nice.
BTW: the 997/987 Tiptronic is still made by Mercedes-Benz.

    Probably for fuel economy figures...

Re: Lugging an engine with a tiptronic?

I find the tiptronic sport chrono mode to be really intuitive, maybe it's my style but it seems to almost read my mind when it comes to shifting. It also avoids the low-revs/high-gear "granny" mode almost completely.

Having said that I do agree that it can be uncomfortable, especially around town, and is only really suitable for open road.
