    Re: 2023 Formula One

It's splitting hair when talking about skill wise for the current crop of top drivers, Max, Russell, Lando, Leclerc, Sainz and the 2 old guards Hamilton and Alonso. Heck, even Ocon and Gasly and Albon are borderline touching that group. The difference between them is only about the car they are driving.

The current Red Bull car, actually since like forever, has been tailor made to Max's driving style. Whatever he prefers, the car favours that. Very unlike other teams where the car is neutral and both drivers needed to make some adjustments. It's why the 2nd driver at Red Bull is having such a hard time 'matching' the performance of Max. Put Max in the Ferrari and he would do no better than Leclerc and Sainz, or in a Mercedes with Hamilton and Russell. Heck he might even come off worse as the car won't be optimized for his driving style. But he clearly will have the talent to maximize whatever car is is given.

But that's F1, it has, and always will be about the car first. The driver inside is just secondary.

I finally watched the highlights and wow, the Mclarens are STRONG this week. Great start by Lando and great job in holding off Max for so long. Even Piastri is up there meaning the car is working really really well with the upgrades.

Albon has another strong showing, and man how the might Ferrari has fallen, beaten by a Williams. And the Williams are genuinely good, even Sargeant is right up there just behind the 2 Ferraris.

So Red Bull sack de Vries half way in and put Ricciardo back into F1. Wonder if that's the next step for demoting Perez. For sure it won't be Yuki that gets promoted. Yuki will be a goner when the Honda contract finally runs out in 2026. He is only racing because of the Honda money.

But that also raises an interesting question. When Aston picks up the Honda power in 2026, will they HAVE to take Yuki? That would be very interesting to see Junior racing alongside Yuki. That's gonna be fun at Aston. Don't see Alonso sticking around, but if he is, would daddy sack Junior to make room for Yuki?

Take away Max from the championship, this year is actually quite exciting, 6 different drivers placed 2nd and 6 different drivers placed 3rd already. And the running order of the other 19 drivers has been a good mix. it was actually a good thing Max fuck off into the distance from the start every time as the camera can just skipped his car and showing more of the other battles behind. So each GP is actually a fight from the other 19 drivers and they just tack on Max at the top in the end.

Maybe just give him the trophy now and tell him to stay home and Red Bull can fill a replacement driver for the rest of the season?

    So true

Great racing if you focus on the remaining 19.

    Re: 2023 Formula One

Gonna be a very, highly interesting start tomorrow. We finally get another Max vs Lewis front row, which has been missing for basically 2 years.

Max has the title in his pocket already, he got nothing to lose, I totally expect him to be true to himself and be the classic banzai Max that he always is. He definitely won't mind crashing with Hamilton and take them both out as he would get great satisfaction denying Hamilton a win. A nice revenge for Hamilton taking his pole away.

THAT, would be GREAT news for Norris. Who is still gunning for his first win. And he will have a great chance to do it if Max do indeed take out Hamilton and himself in the process.

Heck McLaren might get another 1-2 finish with Piastri showing great form in the new spec McLaren.

    Re: 2023 Formula One

Max could break the record for the most consecutive wins today, so I'm not sure if he would risk that. He has probably been briefed to take it home safely, no?

    Re: 2023 Formula One

Finally a race that one can look forward to... I really hope that we can get an interesting race with a new winner Lewis or Lando.... it's about time... great effort by Lewis yesterday... well deserved!!!

    Gauss:

IF he can keep his cool, which by all means isn't likely. He probably already lost some sleep last night after Lewis stole his pole.

I do hope he is mature enough now that he got 2 titles under his belt and a 3rd that's waiting for him that he will for once races clean against Lewis. I strongly believe the Red Bull is still way faster under race condition so even if he loses the lead going into turn 1, he will just wait for the right moment to do a proper pass for the lead.

    Re: 2023 Formula One

And I called the wrong two cars for a collision, it was the Alpines instead.

The dirty side was surprisingly grippy for the start, Max and Piastri both benefitted against Lewis and Norris.

Clean enough pass from Max for the lead into turn 1.

    Re: 2023 Formula One

So after getting past Hamilton in the first corner, Max, as usual, fucked off into the distance. Think he had like 120 seconds of coverage after the start.

Man those Ferraris, they really have fallen. A pity. Dysfunctional would be a proper description

McLarens are for real to be best of the rest as the Astons are nowhere to be found after a hot start to the season.

The Mercedes' race pace showed how great the pole lap was yesterday from Hamilton. That was all skills. But what a surprised when they gain pace at the end with a much lighter car, a few more laps Hamilton might overtake Perez and Russell on Leclerc, but that's a moot point with a penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

Great showing from Ricciardo on his return, not only from qualifying but also the race, dragging that back marker to finish 13th. Granted the 2 Alpines self-destruct but still.

Everything is clicking right at Red Bull, the car is all conquering even with great strides made by other teams, on top they have THE BEST pit crew, 1.9 seconds for a Perez stop, wow! This Newey car is going to do a clean sweep of the season.

    Ferrari is embarrassing themselves,
McClaren looks terrific, and Piastri will become top notch

RB's update sure worked by Sunday; but they hadn't gotten sorted on Saturday, witness Max's comments.

    Re: 2023 Formula One

So Lando broke Max's trophy during celebration, maybe that's an omen for things to come? That Lando will be taking away wins from Max? One can only hope.

Will be a fun season if Max does not win another race for the rest of the year.

Can Mclaren catch Ferrari if they continue this great form for the rest of the season? Or even catching Aston?

    this seems quite possible:

    Re: 2023 Formula One

    Hardly.

Max would stop it with 500% effort. He doesn't want someone that's close in ability to be in the same car as his to threaten his position as the #1 at Red Bull.

Horner won't allow anything remotely close to threaten his golden goose. Maybe Marko wants him but at the end of the day Max and Horner will have the final say.

Very different scenario compared to Mercedes taking on Russell. Russell is the clear successor to Hamilton, who isn't going to stay long.

What Red Bull needs would be a clear #2 driver that's solidly one level down from Max, that would rule out Norris, Piastri, Russell, Leclerc and Sainz. Their junior program isn't as good as before and no one is close to taking that next step, not even Lawson, who probably need another year or 2. That leave Ricciardo, Bottas, Ocon, Gasly, Albon and maybe Hulkenburg. Gasly and Albon isn't going to return to that toxic environment, Ocon is happy to be at Alpine to be the quasi 1A driver. And we are right back at Ricciardo again plus Bottas. Is Bottas willing to go back to being a clear #2 at Red Bull instead of the clear #1 at Alfa? Very likely not. That literally leaves Ricciardo competing against Perez for that seat.

I mean if Red Bull pays Alonso enough, he will happily be the #2 there and cheer for Max like how he is doing at Aston for Junior.

Maybe they can pry Vesti away from the Mercedes junior program, or Pourchaire from the Sauber/Alfa program, but those 2 are maybe another half a step behind their own Lawson.

The wild card here will be Zhou. Signing him means loads of Chinese money, is he as good as the others here? Maybe not. But they have taken in Yuki for the longest time also because of Honda.

Not sure if the advantage is really that big, as conditions were changing due to the rain... lets hope that its not that big

    Re: 2023 Formula One

So it was a SSDD thing at the sprint race in Spa. We thought there could be excitement but oh well, Piastri never stood a chance to fend off Max with the much superior Red Bull car.

    Re: 2023 Formula One

well f1 besmirched itself today. and Gasly needs to leave and play ping pong:  he "felt unsafe" -- so go to your safe place and get tf off the track, and retire today and park it..  Compared to the old days f1 is a joke.

    Re: 2023 Formula One

    Ah Alpine.

We all thought Ferrari is the most dysfunctional team on the grid, here comes Alpine and said hold my beer........

Renault is going at it all wrong. If they gonna act like this and think the races will come to them, they might as well quit and leave F1.

First it was Alonso, then Piastri, now Otmar and Permane.

What's next? Maybe Gasly and Ocon wants out too and drive for a better run team.

And that complaint about their engine being down on power? Perhaps they can use Honda engines from 2026 onwards.

Yum, Civic Type R engine in the Alpine A110......

    Re: 2023 Formula One

Oh right, there was an F1 race earlier.

Heard a Belgium kid in a Scarlett Steer drove an F1 car around a whole field of F2s and F3s and won by a mile as expected.

Moving on, nothing to see there.

Ah yes that kid, born in Belgium, raised in Netherlands and living in Monaco. he might be famous one day.

He is also dating the girlfriend of a Russian ex F1 driver and also been raising their kid. Perhaps he will raise that kid to be a future F1 driver like how his own dad did to him.

    Re: 2023 Formula One

Another great track and another sad race... I love the Belgian GP, and I always look forward to this race, as this is by far the best track IMO. And yet again due to the huge difference between RB and the rest it was a boring race. One must congratulate RB for doing such a great job with their car and the pairing of Max and the car is just perfect, but unfortunately it ruins the whole season... and TBH I don't see anything changing this or next year as it seems that RB is just on another planet. The only thing that would help F1 at the moment is to put a strong young gun like Norris, Russel or Leclerc in the RB next to Max in order to have some excitement, but as we know RB it will not happen... so for the coming years we will have to see how Max will drive circles around the rest of the field.

    Re: 2023 Formula One

After looking at the qualifying lap times I passed on watching the race this Sunday, feels like I'm being duped out of my time with a fake competition... I'm finding it harder and harder to sit down to watch the races, feels like watching WWE vs real MMA.
