    Andrew, cool down.
I drove in a Carrera GT on the track as a passenger with Jochen Albig (a well known german race car driver and Porsche test pilot), I was allowed to drive a CGT on a parking lot once to be able to tell how good or bad the clutch worked and I even sat in the "Number One" (my Avatar) in Weissach and talked to Mr. Hölscher who was standing next to it. But NO, I do not own a Carrera GT and to be honest, I'm not sure if I would want one. Especially since Ben's horrible accident, I realized that the CGT is a challenge, even in experienced hands. Since I don't do professional racing anymore, I don't have the training to drive such a car at the limit. To make it short: I would probably kill myself in the CGT, I'm the type of guy who has to try the limit. With the lack of PSM (ESP) and a very unforgiving handling with ASR turned off, I would need to concentrate 100% all the time with no margin for an error. This may work on the track and driving alone but otherwise... I wasn't able to move my tuned 543 HP 996 Turbo at the limit, so guess what the ride in a much lighter and more powerful CGT would be alike. This is one reason why I like my 997 Carrera S: I can play with this car like a toy, it is no real challenge for me, even at the limit. Maybe I'm just getting old and chickening out...two kids make a difference.

heh, i was gonna say! i guess youre just beat, you dont want to drive something scarey!? just kidding, i think i understand you... a CGT would be very scarey! i guess people like walter rohl should feel comfortable but for the rest of us i assume it would be quite different

Only the 997 Turbo engine itself had no sign, the upper part was covered by a blue plastic cover but just a little bit, so we were able to see the whole thing, incl. the turbo chargers which were partially embedded in some sort of housing.

This housing seems to support your earlier report on an entirely new turbo system which needs special cooling. Right?

Re: Coming back from the FACTORY with some interesting news

RC, I spoke with Ben on a ride in his car about the fact of needing to cool it a bit since he had his first kid!

After 3 kids I have lost that crazy edge as well....Good choice on keeping it under control....

Thanks for all the great info as well.!

Re: Coming back from the FACTORY with some interesting news

I try to answer to three posts in one post.

    1. Like I said, we were three persons, all of us passionate Porsche owners and enthusiasts. We weren't able to see a big difference between the 997 Carrera 4 Cab and 997 Carrera Cab (which both look the same compared to the 4S/S, only the exhaust pipes are not the same), even with both standing one next to each other. We had to look twice to see a difference and without the model designation on the rear, we wouldn't have seen ANY difference.

So in my opinion, buying a Carrera 4 or 4S ONLY makes sense if somebody really wants/needs the 4WD system. Otherwise, there isn't much difference and I'd say that 99% of the people out there on the street wouldn't see a difference too. Of course if you see both one next to each other, there is a difference but even that difference is hardly visible.

    2. Regarding the turbo charger housing we saw: I don't have a clue what this was. Maybe some sort of charger cooling system, maybe a charger with variable impeller, etc. I don't know. Or maybe it was the engine of the rumored 997 GT1 and we saw something we shouldn't have seen.
I don't think that Porsche really needs some new technology to squeeze 480 HP out of the 911 Turbo engine but who knows, maybe...

    3. Regarding kids and my driving style: not only my driving style changed, I'm more relaxed, have less ambitions regarding driving and (good or bad?) I have more fears than I had before. Best example: today I enjoyed a very relaxing drive in the sun in my wife's Boxster S with open top. And of course I got a little sun burn on my forehead...

The funny part was that there was a group from the US and one guy took FLASH pictures all the time and nobody really cared. But this group was from PCNA I think, they all spoke US English and had a "Club" sticker on their shirts.

    RC,

Then next time you travel to Stuttgart to Zuffenhausen, simply get one of those "Club" stickers and slap it on a shirt that's loud and gaudy with big "U-S-A" letters on it, and hang your digital camera around your neck with flashbulb and all. You could probably get enough "spy" photographs to crash my computer!

Well, perhaps the so-called rational part of your brain IS your wife...

Re: Coming back from the FACTORY with some interesting news

RC- thank you for answering my question on the 997S Cab vs the 997 4S Cab.

Any specific release date on the 4S Cab?

He will get in trouble, when the Panamera comes out... (well, pretty long time to go)

Re: Coming back from the FACTORY with some interesting news

    Or the Cayman..

    4. we weren't able to see ANY sign of a 997 GT3, no engine parts, nothing.
    Strange.

    5. we saw a batch of 997 powerkit engines which had a sticker on them that they were not to be released to production before July 15th.

...or this is the sign that the 997 GT3 will be some 997 C2 X51 derivative

    just kidding!

    thanks for the report RC!

since PAG probably knew that you are coming to collect your wife's boxster, i'm pretty sure that all the security was only around at that particular day! :

Re: Coming back from the FACTORY with some interesting news

    RC,

Any hints of 997TCab or "S" or GT2 variants based on your Zuffenhausen tour? Now that I've "taken the plunge" on the 996T purchase with pick-up from the dealer this Thursday afternoon (triple black 2005 TSCab-see thread on 996 Turbo board), I'm trying to mentally confirm my strategy for the 997T purchase (trade 996TSCab for 997TCab or await 997TSCab then trade, or keep the 996TSCab and tune it like mad and add the 997TCoupe or TSCoupe or GT2).

A RWD 997 GT2 with that variable geometry turbo and updated suspension (and hopefully attempts at weight savings) could be a complete monster!

Re: Coming back from the FACTORY with some interesting news

thanks for the report RC, I guess next time if you go inkognito you'll discover even more!

    cheers

I'm not sure, I think security was tight anyway.
I plan to go back to bring home some nice pictures (I know where to take the shots) but I also don't want to annoy anybody at Porsche. Security hasn't been raised without a reason, too many customers were shooting stuff they really weren't supposed to shoot and sometimes when a friendly Porsche employee allowed a nice test mule picture for the family album, this picture actually showed up on the internet. These times are over, I'm afraid.

    But we'll be back soon...
