Anyone done a 2 week trip, with kids in a 997?

I'm planning a driving trip to the South Island this summer, taking my wife and kids, 10 and 7 yrs, who fit very well in the back of the 997. Be away for 2 weeks max, driving at least 3000km. Most we've done so far is 3 days. Need to book accomodation in advance at that time of year, so planning is important.

Most think I'm crazy taking the family with only 150l of luggage space.... I dream of driving those roads again - this time in a 997, And I want to take some nice pics too. Any tips or comments appreciated

Maybe you should think about shipping your luggage to your destination? Via Fed-EX or UPS? As long as you're staying at one destination.

Or spring for a roof transport system...

Re: Anyone done a 2 week trip, with kids in a 997?

To be honest: I would NEVER take my two kids on a longer distance in my 997's rear, it is way too uncomfortable for them (the upright position of the rear seats makes the usage of child seats uncomfortable too).
My wife actually had a very nice suggestion when we wanted to book our next trip to South France for a week or so. Instead of driving there together in our family beast, the Cayenne Turbo, she could take a plane with the kids and I could drive in my 997. Advantage: I would enjoy myself on the trip to South France (around 850 km from my town in Germany) and the kids wouldn't have to stay in the car all day (a 10 hour trip in the car if driving fast).
Another advantage: we would have a nice "family" car in South France for short commuting. Sounds like a nice idea to me.

And to make things more interesting, you leave home at the same time and see who arrives first in South France

THAT is a great idea. Although it will be a "driving", or "touring" trip ie mostly around the circumference of the South Island, with no major destination, the worst bit will be the 6hr (driving fast too) trip down the North Island (and back), which I would prefer to do in one day. (There's not much we haven't seen before.) The family could fly to Wellington and back, and we'd drive together in the SOuth Island only. This could be broken up into a max of 300km every other day, which our kids would manage fine.

I agree about the seats in the rear, but have you seen tha ones in the 997 cab? They're beyond upright! The kids are still small for their age, and we're not tall either, so there's plenty of legroom for them.

SoCal Alan, good idea if we were staying in a major destination, in fact we may ship a load of clean clothing to Queenstown, and ship the dirty washing back since we can't carry too much in the car

JasonF: I hate the roof boxes and would do anything to avoid using one! It would solve some problems though.

Porker!!: a la Top Gear??, I could win by starting the "race" at midnight, after the last flight, and be in Wellington by 6.00am for the first ferry. (We used to do this in my student days, but don't think I'd do the whole trip at night by myself these days.) The first flight would leave Auckland around 6am, for the 45min flight to Wellington. I could win the race if I stack the odds in my favour too!!

Thanks for the great ideas guys,
