Grant, I have a question regarding tire wear in the center. Is it a sign of overinflation (causing the tire to "balloon", i.e., to be more round, resulting in more contact and wear in the center)? Or is it a sign of underinflation (causing the tire not to be "stretched" properly, allowing it to balloon at high speed instead of the contact patch remaining flat)?

I used to assume the former, but I was told years ago that it was, counterintuitively, the latter.

I believe that under-inflation wears the shoulders and over-inflation wears the center.

That's always the case, because science.

Sidewalls are always stiffer than the flat part, so for under inflating tires, the sidewalls will be what's supporting the car, hence the shoulder will be wearing quicker for under inflated tires.

Over inflating will balloon a tire, again the side wall is stiffer so they would bulge much as compared to the contact patch so the centre will always goes first.

One reason why EVs have higher than normal tire pressure, they want the centre to bulge out some what to minimize the contact patch and minimize friction. On top of EVs being generally heavier and needed more support.

Got my car out of hibernation. A toy...  an angry one indecision

I noticed my tire pressure monitor  tells me I am +0.3 bars at the back when I actually run the recommended 2.0 bar front and 2.3 bar back pressures written on sticker in the the door passage. .

Have the official pressure been changed to 2.0 front and 2.0 back ?

Can the guys who just received a new car check what is written in the door and compare to what the PTMS tells them ?

You may want to look inside the owner's manual.  For the 992 GT3, there are two different sets of pressures.  One higher set for highway use and for speeds over 290 kph and one much lower set for "Performance".  Given my tire wear (wearing the center of the treads and not on the shoulders at all even at the track), I think under 2.0 Bar front and rear may be fine when cold if you intend to do some enthusiastic driving.

But having said all that, you should disregard those annoying warnings of "+" or "-" pressure.  Those are useless and just an annoyance, in my experience.  I have to frequently clear those warnings (especially at the track).  It doesn't mean you have too much or too little pressure relative to the recommendations, it means your pressure changed from what it was before (which is common with use and weather changes).

Agree that the + - , when on track are just annoying. You can put the TPMS on track mode but it has to be confirmed each time you start the car again. And so often one forgets and then you get the warnings about the tires being too low. Not done well at all.

There are a couple of aftermarket exhaust systems being promoted. Here’s a video from one of them:

Today I met up with a friend in the Eifel and drove a couple of laps on the Nürburgring. Driving during the week is so much more relaxed and rewarding, because there's no traffic when you want to get off the track and you always find a parking spot, unlike on the weekends.

The car is a bit nervous, it's jumping around a lot, but that keeps you on your toes. Lots of adrenaline rush (also due to the noise). I guess that makes this car so special, you have to work it and control it. To me the car offers equal fun, whether it's on winding country roads or on the race track. What I have learned to like the most since I took ownership last August is the way it drives, the handling of the mid engine concept. It's sublime kiss

The noise inside the cabin however is borderline excessive smiley

I also saw my first GT3 RS live. The car looks over the top for anything else than driving on a race track. I love it.

Going back on Saturday & Sunday, albeit the dreadful traffic.

Re: OFFICIAL: Cayman GT4 RS (2021)

That photo paints the perfect Nordschleife atmosphere as it should be. I'll join your example and head out there during the week shortly.

And that bold part, is the essence of the GT4RS. It's a proper driver's car, Porsche hasn't has a proper one in a long long time. It rewards good driving. It was how Weissach tuned it to begin with. The nervousness came from the mid engine layout, and under-tired to boot.

Very unlike the very tame 992 GT3, where it's drama free fast, just about anyone can go really fast in the GT3.

I suspect the GT3RS will tip the scale over to the nervous side over the stable GT3.

Re: OFFICIAL: Cayman GT4 RS (2021)

I’m curious what oil pressure you guys are seeing in your cars?  Mine is always bouncing up against the red area of the gauge.  Was told it’s fine, but wanted to hear what others are seeing.  I honestly never noticed on the GT3 but was told it runs the same which would make sense.

Can you report the pressure (in Bar or PSI at what temp and rpm)?  Probably fine - I know the scale is skewed toward the Red zone.  There is a pressure relief valve that prevents over-pressure.  Oil pressure problems are generally because the pressure is too low.  Also keep in mind that pressure decreases with increasing temp and increases with increasing RPM...

Running 60-65psi at low RPMs ~2200 at 194oF oil temp.  At higher RPMs I've seen over 70psi.  After already having a min oil warning with 700 miles on the car I was concerned something was going on.  Was more worried about having a low oil pressure problem when the low oil warning popped up.  So checked the gauge and that's when it seemed skewed to the high side as you mention.  Tech said everything sounded normal, just wanted some additional data.

High 60's is pretty normal.  When over 70psi, was it barely over 70 or way over?  If barely, that's fine.  You never had a low oil pressure warning - just a warning to add more oil, right?  Sounds ok to me...

Just went for a drive and saw over 70 (at least 71psi) - it’s fine.  Not sure they moved the red scale for you on the RS (from GT4) motor…

Re: OFFICIAL: Cayman GT4 RS (2021)

Is anyone else tracking their 4RS ? Various people are reporting brake shudder. I'm still on my stock brake pads and they are not showing any signs of vibration. However I am a bit concerned that it might occur in the future.

The widely held opinion is that one should change the pads immediately, when the discs are still new. The heat generated by the OEM pads may disform the discs. Once this happens, there's no going back. Even Pagid pads, used by Manthey, have been reported to show shuddering under braking. Porsche center also advise against reinstalling the OEM pads.

The upgrade kit from Manthey is no longer available to purchase, and they say, they are uncertain whether it will be made available again. Since I'm not willing to spend +43k € on their next best kit, I'm currently looking for alternatives. Some have upgraded their 4RS with Porsche motorsport parts, from the Clubsport. However, I value my approved warranty...then again, the upgrade kit from Manthey had never been Porsche-approved either...

Re: OFFICIAL: Cayman GT4 RS (2021)

I don't think the rotors get deformed - it's just getting pad material transferred to the rotors in an uneven manner.  If this happens, it's easy to clean it off and begin again (3M Scotch-Brite dish scrubbing pads and Simple Green cleaning solution).  This applies to stock iron brakes, not PCCB...

BTW, I use Race Technology RE10 pads and Endless RF650 fluid - both great.

Re: OFFICIAL: Cayman GT4 RS (2021)

Porsche PCCB cannot be wrapped. If anything, it would be the aluminum hat interior that got wrapped and create that shuttering.

The only time I did that was when I track met 918 at my track, in the summer.

Porsche examine my brake discs and warrantied them, for free.

Nothing else in Porsche's line up will arrive at corners at a great speed than a 918. For those that did it at anything less than a 992 GT3RS, they are driving wrong. But then even with a GT3RS, they will be cornering at a faster pace so the braking event is less severe.

I mean, bad driving will cause unforeseen effects, but Porsche can't predict every scenarios. They can only do for 'normal' driving by semi-decent drivers.

I agree with Grant.  Uneven pad deposits on the rotor will absolutely produce shudder or pulsating pedal feel.
