Re: Help, My 996 Turbo S is too Slow

Let's face it : on the "Autobahn" lot's of cars can catch up with Porsche's in these day's (AMG's,M's) but on a race-track it would look different. I've witnessed it in Monza/Italy - lost in the mirror after 2 fast rounds.....

Re: Help, My 996 Turbo S is too Slow

link goes to a different article...if you the 996 Turbo S is too slow for anyone they should send it to me

That is not correct: AMG S/E/SL 55 or M5 are slower - also in straight line performance. In Germany, you can test it yourself. However, the margin is very small today.

    JimFlat6,

This is what could be called "Car Mag Hyperbole." It's another case of "apples and oranges" since Autoweek is comparing a tuned up M5 (called the "B5," weighing in at nearly 2 freaking tons) to a stock 996TSCab. A better test would be an Alpina vs. an RUF or one of many other modded 911 (and the stock TSCab with all its built-in "compromises" is still a better car).

Re: Help, My 996 Turbo S is too Slow

The B5 isn't a tuned M5 at all, they have completely different engines, not to mention the gearbox.

Re: Help, My 996 Turbo S is too Slow

Just read the text. Quote from the above AutoWeek article:

"Just as we started to accelerate, a silver Porsche 996 911 Turbo S coupe went flying past at about 190 mph. Could we resist the temptation? ... In about 10 seconds we were on the Turbo S's tail at 190 mph."

10 seconds to 190mph after the turbo S was flying past? After having read the AMS-Nardo test of the B7 (including its 0-300 acceleration time) the "10 seconds" statement clearly underlines the "quality" of AutoWeek. They seem to write for people who have not the opportunity to verify the statements made.

Is not AutoWeek also the US magazine that stated that the M5 is quicker than an F430?

This magazine seems to be a joke.

Re: Help, My 996 Turbo S is too Slow

The article seems to be quite in line with the one in latest Evo. Think it was electronically limited to 195mph. Anyone remember if that is correct (Vmax cannot be that far away anyway)? Top end acceleration I cannot verify of course. The coolest thing is that the B5 is available in touring version. Perfect family car!

Can anybody recall the B5's acc. and topspeed figures?

Anyways, this article is a joke. It takes far too long to reach someone going at 190 mph when you are only going a couple mph faster. Besides that I suspect the Turbo S to be a tad faster than claimed topspeed. One of the first std. Turbos reached up to 198 mph in an AMS Nardo-test already!

Well, maybe we should say it like this: the B5 is a tuned BMW.
BTW: Alpina is the ONLY BMW Tuner worldwide which is officially acknowledged by BMW and they even work together officially.

Guys, I thought the same and owned a Mercedes E55 AMG (AMG upgraded with 300 kph speed limit raise, limited slip differential, modified gearbox software) for 6 months. I sold it, it was BORING BORING BORING. Fast on the straight line but definetely not even close to the sporty feel of a sports car.
High power limousines are always a compromise, some dumb people like me always have to learn it the "hard" way (oh boy did I loose money).

This is why such comparisons done by car magazines sound nice, they may even entertain the "masses" but they are absolutely worthless.
But I'm not surprised at all, imagine those car journalists who privately drive a family car, hatchback or whatever and put them in a high power limousine or sports car. Of course they are VERY VERY enthusiastic but this doesn't say anything. I once took my wife's girl friend in a Boxster S with me for a short distance, she was almost crying of happiness. "This car is so fast, it is unbelievable...", I have these words still in my head. She drives a Mini Cooper, I wonder how she would have reacted driving in my former 996 Turbo with 543 HP.

The ONLY car magazine I actually really take serious is german made SPORT AUTO.
The editor-in-chief, Horst von Saurma, is a respected professional race car driver, track instructor and car enthusiast. And he is probably the only one who gets a Carrera GT for driving it for a weekend on the Nuerburgring Nordschleife. He is also highly respected in the Ferrari community and by other sports car communities over here, his tests seem to be unbiased and right on the spot.
And guess what: his wife is a professional driver too, she even does some of the lower class tests.

Absolutely agree with you on that issue - are you talking about Mrs. Wassertheuer by the way?

Re: Help, My 996 Turbo S is too Slow

i think if any body own 996 turbo or 996ts or gt2 and didnt do an upgrade to his ECU , he is sick ... its easy to beat most of street cars by (just) ECU upgrade .

free your 70 horses and let them help to push your car
