996 GT3 is a great car for the track but not one I would not want to live with. Consider: ride quality on public roads, No PSM (can bite you if you're not vigilant because the car is SO fast, SO quick), LOW ground clearance, esp. front valence panel, no back "seats" if that's an issue for you, GT 3 gets VERY hot inside (no A/C).
997 on the other hand is considerably more civilized and one I can EASILY live with. It has all of the features that the 996 GT3 lacks, except for the raw speed. For most day to day use the 997 is more than adequate...

I have driven both - back to back - and prefer the GT3. No statement here at all about what others like/want/need - I don't mind a little stiffer ride and whatnot, in exchange for the GT3's power, response, and feel. Gotta love the 997 style, design, and features though.
Try both extensively before you decide - tell the dealer that you will likely buy one, but that you need to drive them back and forth a couple times to learn the difference.
If you have the means, I would recommend a GT3, with a boxster on the side...

I had a 2001 996 GT3 for 4 years. I really liked this car. Now I have a 997 Carrera S Cabrio and I really wait the time for 997 Gt3 or 997 Turbo (that i am in the waiting list) to come out in order to exchange it..
You cant compare these 2 cars. I dont like the 997 S at all. The car is far too dangerous in the corners (If you know how to drive) compared to the GT3. You cant have everything. It is your choice. 997 S is a car for everyday use compared to Gt3 which is a car for Fast (NOT EVERYDAY") driving.
P.S I have to admit though that 997 S has better brakes in my opinion than Gt3

Well I made my decision and went with the 997s today. Drove a TT and it was fun, but did not seem to be the car that the 997 is. I am sure the 997 TT will be awesome, but very expensiv. Ordered Seal grey with Black adaptive seats, and sprot chrono. Did not go for the Sport shifter or PSE tho.
