Re: OFFICIAL: Cayman GT4 RS (2021)

A great thread. I can understand everyone views re the GT4RS, 991.2 GT3 and 992 GT3. I traded in my 991.2 GT3 for my 992 GT3. The 992 GT3 PDK works for me. I don’t track my cars and I think the GT3RS won’t be a good road car. My friend gets a GT4RS early next year. So I hope to try it in good weather when I can. I plan to get a 992.2 GT3 PDK touring next. Glad Porsche knows it’s customers and covers all the bases.

Like you I don't track my 991.2GT3RS. However, reading the the various post by members (who know a lot more about performance cars than I do) about the GT3 variants has helped me decide whether to turn my RS in and "upgrade" or keep what I have. I think I'll keep my RS.Smiley

Thanks Whoopsy, Eric, Grant and others. Yes we are all a little different and the world is a better place for it.

I really enjoy this forum. I check it daily.

Its a niche little haven of mostly like minded intelligent folk who enjoy a good banter and of whom I respect all for their various different life experiences, passion and expertise.

Years ago I was posting on a lot of forums. I think on Rennlist I have over 20 year membership and 14,000+ posts.

These days this is the only forum I regularly post on. I havent posted on Rennlist for many years.

Wishing you and your loved ones/family a Merry Christmas and an enjoyable festive season. For us down here its BBQ season. The same but not the same LOL!

Ah yes Rennlist. Every now and then I can carry on an intelligent discussion there, but it's fill with too many random people who just spew nonsense in between, too much noise so so speak.

I discovered both just about the same time, but I am more here than there. different crowd.

Indeed Whoopsy; this board has been special, and the only one I follow, although it has become a shadow of its former self. Very few postings, few topics discussed. I think the turning point were the political discussions a few years back. Or could it be that we have reached peak automobilia, and there isn't much left to discuss?

Coincident with that timing is the whole COVID-19 debacle.  It completely debilitated any extra time for me to think about much else.  It sapped my extra energy as I began working harder than at any time in the past 3 decades just to keep my business afloat, dealing with chip shortages and dissembling suppliers.

Took the fun car winds right out of my sails.

Here is a Q. How long can you park a GT3 before the battery goes empty?

If it is going to be parked for more than a couple of weeks, it is generally better to put it on a trickle charger for long term health of the battery and to avoid letting it go flat.

We have always used CTEK battery chargers (they also make the Porsche branded chargers) with a comfort connector for ease of use.

If you have an AGM battery, then there are several CTEK battery chargers you can choose from, for example...

    Link 1:  https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00FC42HAA/

If you have a lithium battery (e.g. in a 992 GT3) then take a look at the CTEK Lithium XS Battery Charger...

    Link 2:  https://www.ctek.com/uk/battery-chargers-12v-24v/lithium-xs-uk

Here is an example of the CTEK equipment that some customers use for Porsche cars with lithium batteries...

    Link 3:  https://www.smarterchargers.co.uk/products/ctek-lithium-porche-pack

For a 992 GT3, you might like to do a bit of reading as there seems to be a trick to getting a trickle charger working...

Link 4: Battery Maintainer and the 992 GT3

Of course, you can always pick up a Porsche branded charger from your local OPC, but it might cost a bit more.

Hope you are enjoying driving your GT3! Smiley

Re: OFFICIAL: Cayman GT4 RS (2021)

I can help with that one.

I keep a BT battery monitor on each of my cars in the garage and can read the voltages from my phone app.

    I regularly check them.

The 992 GT3 battery like the 991 GT3 battery before is massive (to run the 4WS system) and will not deplete even with the longest time I have had my car parked up between track days (2+ months). The 992 uses a LiOn cell now and reads around 13.3-13.4v after full charge. My car has currently sat unused for three weeks and is sitting on 13.28v. Even after 9 weeks it read 13.20v. The 992 now incorporates battery saver tehe effectively renders all systems low voltage or cuts them off the system after 5 days. I loose remote management of the car using the MyPorsche app after this time too as the SIM card in the PCM is no longer active.

The 991.1 & 991.2 GT3 did not have such cleaver battery saver technology and ran AGM batteries. Again huge batteries for the 4WS. I would fine that these would need a top up with the CTEK after 6 or so weeks but to be honest I think you could leave those cars for 3-4 months before voltage became an issue.

My garage is temp controlled year round. It will not drop below 10c in winter or go above 28c in summer. The BT battery monitor app does download the historical voltage data when it connects and I have monitored this with all my car over the last 2 years and can say that when its cold the Lead Acid and AGM batteries definately loose voltage but the LiOn seems pretty stable with year round temps in that range.

Older pre 991 GT3 without 4WS have smaller Lead acid batteries. I used to find around 6-8 weeks was the longest those could reliably sit before a top up.

With my boat which will sit in storage for up to 7-8 months unused I fit a battery cut off switch which eliminates any voltage loss. Ive not had to top the boat batteries up in 5 seasons!

When I lived offshore but kept my cars in storage in NZ and returned every 3-4 months I would have battery cut off switches fitted and they worked perfect to manage my cars for 12 years. They are for me the best solution. I have used CTEK for 14 years (have 3 or 4  of them) but I have had one fail once which actually drained the battery of its power back to the grid. For long storage battery cut off switch or removing the terminal is best IMO. Its also cheaper and safer...

Doesn't the 997 also go into deep sleep after one week? My 997.2 does. I need to lift the door handle to wake it up. Remote would not respond otherwise.

After procrastinating for a while and also wait for poor weather to pass, I finally went and pick up my GT4RS.

Frist impression, and no one, absolutely no one had yet to mentioned, is that the car vibrates A LOT at idle. While the 992 GT3 has the same engine, that one doesn't vibrate like this, more refined. The vibrations immediately reminds me of the 911R. The rawness of what's underneath me, waiting to be unleashed.

Can't comment on intake noise, as I drove off the lot at 30km on the clock and now home it's at 90km. Still some ways to go before I go all out. Car in automatic mode, even with a semi heavy foot, try to stay under 2500rpm, at times more like 2200rpm.

But boy this car feels tiny compared to the 992. It's so nimble darting left right. Lovely.

    IMG_2889.JPG

It's too bad my gold Exclusive is at another dealer, or else my current 3 non-black Porsche would have been together. And people think I only buy blacks...........
