    Old is gold

Here is a contribution to kickstart more content as discussed elsewhere on the board. As new cars get fatter and less engaging I think may of us have begun to look backwards to when electricity was for lighting in cars Smiley and only 6V let alone 12V.  I can't find the thread from previously on my 356 Split Window but here she is in a Concours last year:

    981a92ab-6edb-4786-97e0-4cbb850a2e87.jpg

And the 1958 Speedster beautifully repainted and reupholstered:

And the 1957 Coupe in rally gear for the Route Grand Prix in Belgium:

What a joy these cars are to drive, still Uber Kool after all this time, and remarkably robust. Smiley to Porsche design and engineering.

Absolutely stunning beauties, Cray! Thanks so much for posting! Do you drive these cars regularly? Any nice adventures worth telling?

There is something about that Speedster that says yup, its lines are perfect, no need to fudge it one bit.

Regularly would be an exaggeration , but they do get a run out every so often. The Zoute Rally was there days of full on driving with time trials etc as practice for hopefully doing the Mille Miglia one day.

Beautiful ! What material is in the footwell of the Speedster? Seems like at least four different finishes in that interior, interesting.

Base material is original metal with rubber on top. carpets look busy, but are accurate to originals. original Speedsters had leatherette rather than leather, but I prefer real leather and corduroy inserts stop one slipping around in the seat and look cool Smiley. The seats were trimmed by same guys that do the Singer DLS seats.

I didn’t want to say it was busy , but since you said it Smiley. The seats do look very cool !

    Re: Old is gold

    Thanks for sharing these too.

Those lines are just iconic, how they flow from the front to the back in subtile curves. Simple.

I always wonder how these cars behave in curves with such narrow tires and having the body overhanging the wheels. Can they actually take some lateral G's or do you need to treat them as old ladies ?

The Speedster and 57 Coupe can be thrown around easily. The Split Window needs to be handled gently.

Truly glorious Cray, with age I feel the attraction towards these treasures more and more. Modern material just doesn't cut it in the same way.

    Re: Old is gold

The Speedster above is chassis 83896, which I owned for about 10 years in South Florida.  Great memories of driving my 3 boys when they were little to various little league baseball, soccer and flag football games.  My youngest (now 17 then probably 6-7 years old) still remembers us getting caught in the typical Florida torrential downpour and erecting the flimsy top for some small protection.  Some people would worry - but we had a blast.  When I was roped into attending my wife's friends wedding, I drove the car from the Ft Lauderdale area all the way down to the Florida Keys....a beautiful, scenic road trip.  That's a special car, I hope you enjoyed it Crayphile.  Some things have been changed, but I still see the seatbelts I installed.  I also note it's for sale again at Export 56.  I am very, very tempted!

Dude, how old are you again? Smiley

You haven't "suffered" through those times in these cars, so maybe you don't really appreciate modern high tech but I get it, I really do...would love to have a Lancia Delta HF Integrale again in my garage, maybe I'm asking Francois for his... Smiley

Btw: I'm very likely getting a new modern car this year...a M3 CS. I need a daily driver and I think this one is going to be perfect.

I have to be honest though: A 356 would be the last car I would be driving, I have a serious aversion against too old cars, would never get an oldtimer or something like that, this would be pure horror for me. Smiley

I wish it would. The oldest 911 I have is a 964 from 1990. I am keeping an eye open to get a Carrera 3.0 from 76-77 .

Did you own and drive Carrera 3.0 or 964 first time round or are you kind of regressing back into them, regressing may not be best term but I'm sure you know what I mean ?

I am regressing Smiley 964 was an impulse buy and ended up being the car I like to drive most as a DD. It has flaws, it is not for all the time, but it puts a smile on my face each time.

This lead me to wanting even less modernity. Wanting handles to open the windows and not a switch. Wanting lightweigh and a free reving engine. A car I could also ''tune'' to what I want.

My first aim was to get a 2.7 Carrera but prices are now way too high for having this as a daily car, or for doing any mods.. Then I was contemplating an SC.

The ''garage'' I take my 964 to is specialized in air cooled sports 911 ( road and track ) . Had a few talks with the owner and he thought a Carrera 3.0 would suit exactly my needs.

Before you know it you'll be looking at long hood 911S's.
