    Whoopsy:

Some people will always see nothing wrong with Elon. People only see what they wanted to see.

There is much less wrong with him than with people who think he is somehow evil or dumb - or crazy.

    Re: Tesla

Elon isn't evil, far from it. He isn't dumb, far from it. But he is unpredictable, and also make too many decisions or speak in public under the influence of weed. That's the crazy part.

    Re: Tesla

Overvalued for years but it took Musk's Twitter acquisition for the price to adjust in the face of glaring competition from multiple sources.  If it's a margin call, it'll be interesting to learn if Musk & Co. effectively hedged the downside.

    Re: Tesla

Competition is tougher and will only get progressively tougher and tougher, and Tesla doesn't have the resources or ability to respond and adapt, it takes years for them to be able to bring out a new model, those in the pipeline get delayed year after year, sometimes they can't even produce it at all (where is that Tesla Roadster btw?), and their deficiencies like build quality are still there in spite the years they had to get their act together, their promises of FSD, robotaxis, etc are nothing but smoke in the end and never materialize.

They had a good head start with the market all to themselves for a while but it's all uphill from here on, they have a limited faithfull cult like customer base that are very happy owners but that's not enough to compete with the main manufacturers who can do everything the "mainstream" customer wants in an EV but better and many more options.

Actually an excellent idea and a good way to diffuse some of the political heat. He will still be the owner but someone else can make fun of liberals and their media clown car.   IMHO you have not shown me anything irrational at all. Try again.

If it's such an excellent idea, why hasn't he announced that he will abide by the results? All I heard is that he decided, after the fact, that only paid subscribers should vote on such issues.

I have buy orders at $50 for TSLA. I think that's a fair price to pay for the company considering their potentials. Upside would be I can sell at around $65, high end of my estimate. Not even an option call, it's an open order in the market.

    Re: Tesla

It's just simple physics. And there is no getting around physics at all.

It takes a certain amount of energy to move stuff for some distance, doesn't matter how it was transported but the energy needed will be the same.

A gallon of gasoline is the equivalent of ~33.7kWh of energy, diesel is about 10% more, ~37kWh.

A semi have gas tank size from like 125-300 gallons depending on configuration, take a nominal size of 200 gallons, that the equivalent of ~7400kWh, or 7.4MWh, or 74 Model S batteries.

A Tesla Semi is reported to have a 900kWh battery, 9 Model Ss worth but only 1/8th of what a nominal semi have.

Combustion engines aren't the most efficient, the conversion rate is about 1/3 so that diesel semi only has about 2.4ish MWh equivalent usable, still almost 3 times as much as a Tesla Semi.

Even the low end 125 gallon tank semi is going to have 1500kWh usable energy, still almost doubled that of the Tesla.

    Re: Tesla

You try to explain physics to sheep (this forum being excluded) and see what reaction you get.

Sorry to say but we are living in a world full of egocentric people (vanity being a favorite sin of “someone”) that by using technology that they don’t even understand (or how is engineered) they believe they are demigods.

It reminds me of Borg: resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.

More to the point, what’s the energy equivalent for a tank of hydrogen?

(but the size of the tank will be bigger for the same amount of energy as let’s say gasoline)

Hydrogen is calculated differently, not by volume but by weight as it can be in liquid state or gaseous state.

On a per mass bases, it holds almost 3 times the energy than that of gasoline.

how much gas do the trucks fill back into the tank going downhill?  Is that a dumb physics question?

Are you just trying to argue for argument sake?

Roads aren't continuous down hill forever. Or, you wanted to lay special roads for electric trucks so the roads go downhill just as their batteries are drained so they can recapture energy and begin the next leg?

    Re: Tesla

After over-hearing a co-worker talking about how her Hyundai Pallisade can "drive itself" and that her husband covered nearly 4 miles without intervention, I just felt a bit motivated to look again at Tesla.

So I bought in to TSLA at 122.6299 and was already ahead at market close. Do I think they are still grossly over price relative to actual value.....well yes. Do I think the market price will be up from here.....well yes.

There are just so many Americans out there who will soon be buying Tesla products and automotive enthusiasts just cannot relate to the feature set that will draw them to the product.

The aforementioned feature set is much more focused on "auto pilot" not "full self driving" and of course charging at home, and minimized maintenance, just basic appliance transportation. It has barely begun.

(I did also buy F (Ford) at 11.3285 somewhat to hedge my bets, but also because I think price will move up for both)

    Re: Tesla

Whether TSLA can recover hinges on Elon's margin call price and how he negotiated with his lenders.

His money comes from pledging shares of TSLA as collaterals, and the conversion rate aren't even close to 1:1, his is likely to be ~20% of value. With the stock price drop, his collaterals are worth less.

If he gets the call, either he will need to pledge more shares, or sell shares to pay for the difference. And selling more shares means depressing the stock price even more. Vicious circle.

But he can always go on Twitter and announces some vapourware and try and prop up the price to avoid the call, it works every time before.

But honestly if one value TSLA not as a pure car company, but an advanced car company, a valuation of $100b to $150b is a fair and generous valuation. the big 3 domestic are all around 40ish billion, that's the baseline for TSLA even when it sell far less cars, add in another $100b or so for the software feature side of things.

By normal analysis and metrics, TSLA still got another 50% to drop just based on fundamentals. Not even counting the Elon loans effect.

    Re: Tesla

This was posted this morning on another automotive forum I follow.  The car in question is a 2022 Model Y Performance.  Perhaps an OTA will solve everything.

This cold snap hasn't gone well for the Tesla.
    Posted by: Hillbilly (135) on 2022-12-24 11:24:26

Haven't driven the car in two days. The door handles were solidly frozen into the body, wife called said she couldn't get it open. I used the app to pop the door latch but it doesn't matter when the frameless window won't roll down, still can't open the door. That was yesterday, it was cold and dark when I got home so I left it alone. App said the door was open all night, there were no interior lights on I decided I didn't care. Go out today with some rubbing alcohol to put on the belt moldings and door handles. I finally got in and woke the car up to be greeted to this:
    20221224-105749-2

Okay whatever, I assume a sensor is froze or something. I'm anxious to take this car for its first drive in bad weather to test it out. It's absolutely awful. Turned the regenerative braking to "roll" mode which helped a ton, it immediately brakes traction when you let of the throttle. Now it's just less severe. Also set the acceleration to "chill" mode which helped smooth things out, but the main problem is the tires. Holy shit are they terrible in light snow/ice. Came factory installed, it's like being on full slicks when they're cold.
    Screenshot-20221224-111821-Chrome
Go through the neighborhood and out onto the main road, go about a 3/4 mi and turn around at the gas station, I've had enough. I've seen what I needed to. It's below abysmal performance. I could make it somewhere if I had to, but there's no chance the wife is driving this sled.

Go back home and see this in the driveway. I'm assuming the cold cracked a line, this is where it was parked at its charger.

    20221224-102924

Is a damn shame I like this car. I don't want to sell it. I'm not putting a $4k set of dedicated winter tires on it either though
