Any experience with wheel repair??!!?
Does any know if alloy wheel repairs are any good? Would I be better off (and safer) if I just purchased a new wheel? 19" Carrera Classics BTW. This sucks...

Arrrggghhh. Last Friday night, I put my right front wheel into an infamous Chicagoland pothole. I noticed a tiny shimmy in the steering right afterwards. Of course, there is a large dent in the right front wheel.

Could you post a picture of the damage? How large is the dent?
Personally, I think you need to exchange it (no repairs of alloy rims on high performance cars, please!!!). But it would help if we can see the extent of the damage, however the "shimmy" in the steering indicates that the damage is pretty bad.

There is a shop in my town that repairs and refinishes wheels. They do the work for all the local Porsche dealers, body shops, you name it. People accross the country mail in wheels.
I know the owners and asked them to put on a tech session for the local Porsche group. They showed us how they bend wheels back into shape and then true them. How missing chunks of a wheel are replaced. How they use factory coatings to refinish the wheel.
They also showed us the type of damage that cannot be fixed. I saw some really bent wheels that I thought were garbage but they fix them. They have special jigs and a special press.
Ask your local dealer and local owners if there is a local shop they use. That is how I found the shop where I live. When I first met the owners they were more then happy to give me a tour of their facility.
You can see some pictures here.

Are you in CALI?
I phoned a friend who fixed my wife's rims on a 4.6is (not sure if that one is forged) but he says he can have it fixed for no more that $100.00 but you have to take it to him without the tire and takes about 1 day... That's if you're from CALIFORNIA (Bay Area)

Thanks for the heads up. But, unfortunately, I live in Chicago...land of the worst roads in the US of A. Where there are only 2 seasons...winter and construction...
