Odometer reading for miles and the normal bodywork checks , make sure you do this and dont be embarassed , dealers fill in a check sheet on their courtesy cars before customers drive off , so it works both ways..
And what I feel people dont do enough of is check the interior properly , such as door panels , leather seatings , dash furniture , switch gear etc etc , brand new MEANS brand new..
If anything is not up to standard I simply dont take the car away..

Be prepared to be offered extended warranty, lojack, exterior paint protection, etc., which can add up your cost. It all sounds good at the time.

Wher do you live?
When your car has been transported by train , check the paint with "outside light", not in the garage.
Mine had little spots that were removed difficultly!!!
The spots seemed to come from the electric lines above the train.
All parts that were'nt covered were affected.
But you only could see them clearly in daylight.

Congratulations on your big day.
Here are the things you should consider doing.
1) Take a good look around the car. Note any scratches or spots. Take pictures inside and out. It is best to inspect the car in sunlight.
2) Take note of the mileage/km on the clock. It is very common for the sales contract to read zero when if fact there it is not.
3) Have them show you the tire pressure on all four tires. Make sure they are to spec.
4) Check the oil level.
5) Turn on the stereo. Bring your favorite CD for the ride home.
6) Open and close the sun-roof and make sure it works correctly.
7) Have the dealer program the memory for your seat and key.
8) Bring your favorite sunglasses for the ride home.

It's debateable, to me, whether the paint protection was worth it. It sounded good at the time but it cost about $700. The extended warranty sounded good at the time, but we'll see if it was worth it. The lojack sounded good at the time but I never had it installed (I wasn't too thrilled at the prospect of having someone drill underneath my virgin 997S. So, I'm hoping I can use that as credit for the PSE/short shifter. This is from Circle Porsche in Long Beach, CA. Some of the others on this forum have also bought from there so they may add their 2 cents worth here.

Make sure the spare tire is with the car. If no spare start screaming out loud, "where's My SPARE?" over and over. Make sure every other customer in the showroom hears you. Gotta have a spare with this car!
Make sure bumpers match the rest of the car's paint. Sometimes they are slightly off. Porsche should be ASHAMED for letting this happen (especially on AS cars)

Ask about wheel/tire warranty. It is way cheaper than replacng these out of pocket after hitting a pot hole, or other hazard. Don't settle for the first price offered on any of these extras that you feel inclined to take.
I decided against Lojack. If my 997S is stolen, I am not sure I want it back. Who knows what shape it would be in and I don't want to be stuck with a Porsche that has been put back together from the parts bin. Better to get the insurance settlement and move on.

check these things out, these are things i found on my carrera s;
bonnet(hood) out of alignment
boot(engine cover)not level where it joins with bumper
paint defect on front bumper, finger print in paint

I wouldn't get the extended warrenty. They offered it to me in 03 when I bought my BoxsterS. The warrenty company went out of business a while later. You can always buy one AFTER a few months if you change your mind and do your homework.

I noticed a tiny (not deep) scratch on the roof, just above the passenger door. Dealer polished it out.
CHECK the tires, the only thing I didn't check, I found only recently that the drivers front tire was very over inflated (great PDI).

I would think that you can go after the dealership for offering you the extended warranty, correct? I mean, they have to stand by what they sell/offer to you. Then again, the fine print probably removes them of any obligation.
So, if you want the extended warranty, try to get something in writing from the dealership that they will stand by it. Otherwise, say no thanks.

Finally. It seem liked forever, but I picked her up today, Wednesday morning.
It kind of bothered me that the car had 225km on it already. What the HELL?! Anyways, I didn't let it get too me, and I was a happy camper after I drove her off the dealership.
There's only one other 997 in the entire country of costa rica. And I have the only 997s for now! Here's a pic of her this morning.
