Re: Finally, my -20mm 997S impressions and review

    Fantastic report, King Carlos !
    Much better than a professional
Allow me to take a little part of your pleasure as we both drove a black beauty these very last days, trying not to rev above 4500-5000.
Even if I can't say it in good english, this little black car (it really looks small and strong, kind of "bad boy" ) combine all the qualities I expect from a sport car .
Too bad I had to steal so much money to get it !

Re: Finally, my -20mm 997S impressions and review

    Carlos,

Very informative indeed. I too am very much interested in your radar detector mods. I was hoping Porsche would offer a factory-installed radar detection option built in to the Nav system! They could call it PVM ("Porsche Velocity Management"). Keep us UTD on your own install. For the Americans on this thread, does anyone know of a "legal" and reliable radar detection system in the USA? I thought I heard of something that would scramble police radar that was non-electronic that could attach to the bumper, sort of like the "Stealth Fighter Jet" that the Air Force developed several years ago.

thanks Carlos, please keep us updated on the radarstuff. what make is the one you installed? there are so many of them out there its best to know from (your) experience what really works...

Yes..I would also be interested to find out more about it. I did have one some years ago but I was very dissapointed (beeped all the time in citys, beeped too late on highways..I didn' t trust the thing. And also cops got very severe about them.

    cheers

Re: Finally, my -20mm 997S impressions and review

Turbolite, I have the Bel 966R Vector Europa (otherwise known as the Target EVO and Stinguer Ventura) which is specially made for European frecuencies (Ka=34,3GHz, Ku=13.45 and K=24.15). Works extremly well, just this weekend it saved me from a radar trap while I was distracted "test driving" the 997S
The only thing left is laser jamming device which will take me more time to figure out the perfect disguised setup, so that the cops can't see it intalled.

Leong, if you want a larger sized version of that photo drop me a PM with your email

Thanks Zzboba, but if you bring your F430 over I'll gladly take pictures if we could trade cars for a day!

Al Pettee, forget about the non-electronic gadgets, the only way you can scramble radar is by using radar "jammers" such as the Scorpion but radar jamming is HIGHLY ilegal (its a Federal Ofense), not to be confused with laser jammers which are just light emiting diodes and are just as ilegal as using a radar detector. The only way to fight radar is to use a detector, and for US the Valentine One seems very popular due to ist sensitivety and the unique "arrows" feature. There are also remote installed models (hidden in bumper) like mine for the american frecuancies lioke Bel 975R, Bel RX-75, Escort SR7 and such.

Re: Finally, my -20mm 997S impressions and review

Gnil, most probably you had a radar detector set for american frecuencies (including the X band which causes most false signals in the city but it's in disuse in Europe). So the Ka band was set in american wideband causing decreased sensitivety (if any at all) to the comon european narrow Ka 34,3 radars of the highways and tons of false signals in the city.
If it can be configured for europe then all you have to do is to configure it for the Eurpean frecuencies but most don't allow that.

If you guys want, we can start a new thread about radar detectors in europe, models, their frecuencies, laser guns and jamming, autovelox systems, atermic car windows and on-dash detectors, etc. and I'll be glad to help you guys out answering any questions

Re: Finally, my -20mm 997S impressions and review

thanks Carlos, I'll check it out. will need to keep it removable though cause I often drive into switzerland where they are extremely strict on the border and sometimes screen the car with a device that is able to detect hidden antiradars. no messing with these guys..

Re: Finally, my -20mm 997S impressions and review

Great report Carlos! You covered off every aspect of the car.

turbolite, no problem. They can only detect it with that device if the unit is ON because radar detectors emit themselves a bit of radar-microwaves, and these radar detector detectors devices tune into those microwaves frequencies and listen, kind of like detecter themselves detect police radar. So if you have a detector activated and they have one of those, they can detect your detector, but only if its a Spectre model, cause the older VG-2 will not detect current radar detectors such as this one. Anyhow these radar detector detector are rare, and mainly used in Findland and Holland, also I don't know how it is in Switzerland but the fine for having a radar detector is not too bad herte in Spain, just 90 Euro and they don't even confiscate it.
So if you have it turned off, there cannot detect it unless they "see it" with their eyes, and since the display box (the one in my pic thats inside the cabin) can be removed if you want, you can put it away beforehand and the only thing in the car that belongs to the radar detector is the antenna which is hidden "inside" the bumper so they canot find it unless the unintall your front bumper at a shop.

We will be voting on the 5th of June about joining the Schengen territory...If accepted, it should become easyer for you

Re: Finally, my -20mm 997S impressions and review

    Thanks Carlos,

I am not surprised those jammers are illegal. I'll check in to the detectors you suggested. I am overall a law-abiding citizen-However, I make an exception with speed limits!

I used to have one those old cobra radar detectors back in college and medical school days (now I practice neurology), but they were noisy and every burglar alarm on a building within 100 meters of the car would set off the lights and speaker from the unit, so I found it useless. I would like to find one both sensitive to police radar in the appropriate waveband with good filtering capabilities.

The popular police "lock-on" radars that turn on only when one drives by poses a potential problem. Carlos do you or anyone else know if the newer detectors can pick up the signal from the police radar guns even when the radar guns are not activated?

Re: Finally, my -20mm 997S impressions and review

Al Pettee, unfortunately you cannot detect the police radar until they activate it and actually start to emit radar, those "instant on" radars are tricky but some radar detectors are better than others at catching it, especially the new "POP" mode called BEE III, which is very fast in reading your speed (at the expense of accuracy in speed reading it seems )

Here is some info I found a while back that I remeber about it:
    http://www.valentine1.com/pop/

(BTW Neurology? I'm hooked on neuralscience as a hobby ever since I read Kendal & Schwartz, fascinating, its my favorite branch of science )

Re: Finally, my -20mm 997S impressions and review

Carlos, reading your review comes as a big! relief for me, especially the section on -20mm as I to have opted for -20mm rather than PASM without testing the -20mm set up. From your description the -20mm sounds like a good compromise of stiffness V's comfort and is the sort of set up I like. Thanks for posting your review, I am sure many others will benefit from it.

Re: Finally, my -20mm 997S impressions and review

    I second that ACA , but why know -20mm demos ? ..

They would shift it on when it comes to sell time..

    throt..

Re: Finally, my -20mm 997S impressions and review

Throt, the reason is that the OPC's decide how they spec their demos and they consider that very few customers want -20mm set up, plus they seem to have a policy of "steering" customers away from sports suspension saying the ride is very hash on UK roads. This is very frustrating for those who want to try before they decide to buy. Plus ride comfort is very subjective. You would have thought that Porsche GB insisted that at least one dealer carry a -20mm car????

    Great example of awful marketing.
UK and French dealerships assume too much.
A great option is on offer and you can't even try it. Ridiculous!
I'm not saying all dealership should have a sport chassis 911 as a demo but at least one or two within the country so that a really interested costumer can make up his own mind.
You just gotta love it when a w*nker dealer tells you:
No, trust me, I know all! sport chassis is not for you!

Re: Finally, my -20mm 997S impressions and review

Yeah especially so when you ask them whats it like then and they turn around and tell you that they havn't actually tried one!!!!!

Re: Finally, my -20mm 997S impressions and review

Good to hear of your neuro. interest Carlos given your specialty of Chiropractic. One of my interests is neurologic complications of spine disease.

Re: Finally, my -20mm 997S impressions and review

My interest actually pushed me to pursue a post-graduate chiropractic neurology diplomature after graduating, its very useful in our line of work to always know more about the NS. Awsome field Al Pettee, you are very lucky.

Re: Finally, my -20mm 997S impressions and review

Hold your horses, the car is still under brake-in!
As soon a brake in is over the first thing I will do is to try to capture the sound of the sport exhaust in diferent situation and upload it in mp3 format for you guys. Video may come later when I get around to it

Re: Finally, my -20mm 997S impressions and review

drive to germany and back Carlos, it will be run-in quickly! can't wait for the PSE videos!
