    Increased Weight.

Porsche should be very careful with it.

Porsche has motorsport heritage and should be watching there weight on new models.

    GT3 MK1 is 1360
    GT3 MK2 is 1380

A sporstcar like that should not go much higher in weight. It should be lower.

Porsche must not go the same route bmw does heavier and bigger cars and more hp to compensate the weight penalty.

    Re: Increased Weight.

20lbs is so little, it really doesn't make this big a difference if the engine output is similar. but i do agree, they should not go the route of "proportionating" things like bmw and mercedes is doing

    Re: Increased Weight.

Yea, but I'd rather have a safe car to drive in that is heavier than a light car that is a death trap.

    Re: Increased Weight.

correct in that way buy an Elise

    Re: Increased Weight.

if you hit a tree with 150 miles an hour. you be dead anyway. So give me the lighter porsche.

    elise is underpowered.

    Re: Increased Weight.

Active and passive safety plus risen demand for comfort and and space even in a sports car leads to increased car weight.

That's as simple as it is. Either we all have to abandon some of the safety features or have to cut down on our needs for relaxed and comfortable driving.

    Re: Increased Weight.

With all the electronic safety gizmos on the 911, you're more likely NOT to hit the tree at 150mph.

It's 20 kg not 20 pounds. To me 44 pounds is huge.

You can always go on a diet yourself

    Re: Increased Weight.

P should get rid of extra stuff like spare tires. Oh wait, they already did

For a road car why is weight even an issue?

Who cares about weight? As long as Porsche keeps adding the HP and bigger brakes and suspension enhancements to make up the difference I could care less. What Am I missing? seriously?

This weight thing is taken too seriously. NO SPARE so they can say the car weighs less? Greta, that will be very comforting when you get a flat.

Also choose your passengers wisely. No one over 130 lbs, if there's groceries in the car: no passengers?

If you care about the weight, leave your should-be-stock spare tire and jack at home and remove passenger seat.

I'm just making stupid jokes above, but I really don't get this weight thing.

Honestly, I am no expert, but trust me on that one, low weight is miles better than more power.
Sorry, don't have time to explain the physics, AC Milan Liverpool is on and it's AWESOME!!!!

Re: For a road car why is weight even an issue?

Colin Chapman had the right set of principles for building race and sports cars which have survived the years since his death in 1982 - if you keep everything light, you dont need massive power or over servo'd components. This way, the "feel" for what is going on is transmitted direct to the driver (without interference) via the numerous stimulae a driver can absorb (steering, seat of pants, ride, brakes etc). If you have driven the Lotus 7 or Caterham 7 as it is today (license bought by Caterham ages ago), then you know exactly what I mean - if of course your looking for a pure no-compromise sports car.

Personally, after having owned plenty of light weight race/road cars, I think porsche manage to get a better proportion of what is required to make a sports car than anyone in the non-specialist scene (e.g. the Zonda is superb but extremely low volume and v.$$$, the Radical is brilliant but its really a track car only etc).

My 0.02c for what its worth.

Re: For a road car why is weight even an issue?

Lightweight but also struturally rigid. Weren't Colin's cars considered death traps even in the racing circles?

Re: For a road car why is weight even an issue?

I am a racing driver myself. Light weight is better than adding more horses believe me. Better for feel, better for brakes. better for tires etc.

Bmw is adding more horses and more weight and bigger cars. And it s loosing customers at the same time.

Let s hope porsche don t go that route. Keep it simpel and pure. Porsche has big motorsport heritage don t flush it thru the toilet, because of the horse power (v8 v10)battles going on lately.

Re: For a road car why is weight even an issue?

They were certainly prone to breakdown, but in skilled hands they were very successful. Lots of innovation and firsts for technology along the way as well (I think he pioneered the whole aero and ground effect design for example).
