Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

A coupe makes a lot of sense, just like many people buy a 997 coupe because they don't want a cabriolet......

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

The only strange thing about the Cayman is the rear tires. After seeing the backend of my 997 with its wide 19" rear tires, the Cayman, in person, looks strange with the skinny rear tires. You kinda expect that it should have wide rear tires like a 997.

Aren't tires the same as the base 997 (265)? Can hardly call them skinny?

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

some of you guys just love to crap on a good design?

I dont see how they could have changed the roofline to make it look "better" because its still a boxster at heart. You guys could sit here and crap on this car all day but its obviously going to be the next 944 as far as handiling and out right greatness is concernced. If y'all keep it up its going to turn into a marketing disaster like the 944.

    Haters

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

I just received the brochure for the Cayman and I should confess that the pictures look much better than on these pages. Also, some pictures show the Cayman with Sport Design wheels which make the car looks great !

I agree about the roofline.....they did a good job with it IMO. The 944 a marketing disaster?.....don't agree here, it was one of Porsches best selling cars.....and was good a good one to boot.

    Re: 944 Crimes

The 944 was a disaster and heres why...

    Bad steering racks
    Bad ball joints
    Bad water pumps
    Bad transaxle bearings
    Bad idler arm tensioners
    Bad clutches (early turbos)
    Bad radiator/oilcooler design (turbos)
    Windshield/cowl water leaks
    Un Porsche like body structure/integrity
add more if you want to!

Yes they had "balance" and yes the turbos could be
modded to rocketship power, but overall they still
felt like driving the worlds fastest hot dog.

    I owned a 944S, a 944 Turbo and a 968 Cab. I will
    take any 911 over those.

Here is the pic that I think Nico is on about (although spot the deliberate mistake in the photo text)

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

I think this is seriously ugly.

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

I just don't see how anyone can pass judgement on the Cayman's looks based on a couple of pictures. There are so many factors that can affect a car's appearance in photos (lighting, lens distortion, slight angle change, etc). Case in point, check out this picture of, essentially, the side profile. Roofline looks fine to me.

Hmmmm, I owned a 944 and 968 Coupe, put more than 80k miles on them and.....

Never had to replace a steering rack.
Never had to replace a ball joint/control arm.
Only replaced water pumps when major belt change was due.
(never had to replace a leaky one)
No problems with the transaxles....not even the pinion gear on the 968.
No problems with the idler arms....just replaced bushings and rollers as needed during belt changes.
No bad clutches....never had to replace one.
    No cooling problems.
No water leaks, not even the back hatch glass delamination.

Body stucture was just fine IMO.....built like tanks, especially the 968 which was totalled by a head on collision....the driver (person I sold it to) walked away with only bumps and bruises. Very stout.

I will agree that the 911s that were built during the same years as the 944/968 were some of the best ones, but I liked driving the '44/'68 much better.....especially the 968...great car.

Different strokes for differnt folks I guess....

    will Cayman S replace 997C2?

now that the Cayman is released, what's the likelihood of Porsche discontinuing the base 997 Carrera and make the C4 or C2S the entry level 997 to widen the gap between the 997 and Cayman?

Thank Atlantis, this is the pic I was talking about. Also, around page 40, there are two 3/4 rear pictures that doesn't look bad at all.

I really look forward to seeing the car in the flesh, even if I have already started to revise my revise initial judgement.

    Awesome find Gdvw05

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

Cool pic, look at those hips!!!
I like this car more and more!

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

    OK. I'm ready to comment.

I think it reminds me a little of a 904 and a Dino Ferrari. Particularly from the side, you can see the 904 heritage.

Personally, I think I'd rather have the 997, but I say that about everything.

    D.

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

    yeah, awesome pic there Gdvw05...

i've been wondering about the actual space just behind the seats for sometime now, and i guess my dog WILL fit there!!

finally, THOSE HIPS would make even a 997-owner drool!!

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

I guess my son will fit in there as well!

I think that 265 is very skinny compared to 997s with 19's with 295. It just doesn't look right.

That might be a function of the visual "weight" of the 997's rear, which requires a wider tire to balance out the look. The daintier boxster rear end can get away with less tire just fine. I ran 265s on my 986 and at times the tires looked overwhelming from the back.

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

I'm just guessing, because I feel that there will be a limit to the rear-engine layout. The distribution of weight will never achieve a 50-50 balance. It can probably corrected by clever suspension geometry, but only to an extent.

I think the future for driver's cars will be mid-engine.

    Mid January 2006.

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

Agreed - these are gonna just fly off the forecourt. Perfect next purchase for the aspirational Audi TT owner!

    Cayman weight data

The Cayman S is only 5 kg lighter than the Boxster S.

    In lbs 121!

The first and secondd gear accelaration is shorter than the Boxster S. Max rpm is 7300.

Official facts, i heard from my dealer!
