    Re: 918

very cool, thanks for sharing the trip!

I've lived in the Midwest, I wasn't a fan of the huge open flat monotonous landscape myself, don't know how to explain it, felt like being in s void,  I need to see irregular terrain with the ocean/sea as a reference and tress/forests on the mountains, the flat landscape for as far as the eye can see all around is unsettling to me.

    Re: 918

Love your road trip Whoopsy. Please carry on with the photos, I like to see these different empty places.

Your 918 still looks so fresh after all these years. Could be launched now and would look perfect.

    Re: 918

Brilliant Whoopsy, so cool to see these cars getting some use.

    Agree 100%!

Beautiful places, so different from what we are use to here in Europe/

And the 918 is still fantastic!

    Re: 918

What a trrip! Thanks a lot for sharing your impressions, pictures and feelings. As others, I have to admit that the 918 aged really well! Looking forward to further reports and lots of pics!

Congratulations for taking such a special car on this "cinematic" road trip Smiley Most of those cars spend their life hidden in garages. Porsche AG must give you credit for proving their car.

Perhaps you could tell us more about the behaviour of the 918 (which can be classified as a hypercar)  on the variety of roads traveled , ranging from very high speeds to slow traffic.

And I am not even kidding about the same landscape for 3 states. First one is Montana, second is Wyoming, third is South Dakota. All along Hwy 212.

just under 1300 miles done, 1150 to go for the next couple days.

Right now, we are averaging 24 mpg. I dare anyone to find anything remotely comparable. And I haven’t even plug it in to charge up since I left home.

Talkning about charging, after we left Spokane, we haven’t seen a single Tesla, or EV for that matters. Not even charging spots. Towns in Montana are like 100 miles apart. No joke. In between it’s like absolutely nothing.

Isn't driving hundreds and hundreds of miles through three very large states with unchanging landscape the very definition of monotony?

Your comments on EVs once again shows how misguided many of our politicians are with the continual push towards complete electrification of our private vehicles.  There are parts of this country where travel vastly exceeds the average of range of the current typical EV. Now add cold, cold weather to the mix and these EVs will not suffice.

On your fuel economy, is that in imperial gallons or U.S.?

If you are able to make a detour in Indiana, you might want to check out the Auburn-Cord-Dusenberg convention in Auburn, Indiana, which is near Fort Wayne and on the northeastern part of the state.  This morning, not too far from my home, I saw a caravan of approximately 30 of these magnificent cars, some approaching 100 years in age, motoring along a country road.

Thank you again for the updates and photos of your trek across the states.

Also, we found out Ellsworth AFB is just outside the city limit, we had to go visit the museum attached there.

actually you be surprised how little people noticed. Whenever I pulled up to parking somewhere, I engaged EV mode, silent. They can’t hear me coming. Only if they look would they see something special.

The car putt along just fine in traffic, especially if it’s in EV mode, drives like a pussy cat.

Even with the engine running the PDK is perfect, no complaints, except it’s loud😂

At high speed it is as stable as a rock, cross wind doesn’t affect it and it drafts quite well behind semis. Been pretty much running at 90 mph all day today and yesterday through Montana and South Dakota. I would stay in the right lane behind semis until a bit close before I pull out and pass. I can see the power meter goes down when I got close then go up when I pulled out to pass.

3 days of drive, 1900 miles, never used cruise control once. My right foot is better than the computer in controlling speed. I can dial in little power increase going up hill or pulling out while maintaining the same speed. The excellent throttle pedal helps.

Couple down sides. The seat is hyper uncomfortable for long road trip like this. The seat angle is all wrong and the padding isn’t good. I stick a small travel pillow as back support and that helps. Lots. No elegant way to get in and out when the roof is on, every time as gas stations I literally falls out of the car.

The other down side is the noise. Tire noise. Americans simply doesn’t know how to build proper highways. They use bare concrete, groves or no groves. With no sound deadening in the car, on groves highways the tire noise/roar gets up to 89 decibels. And averaged around 85. I used an app to measure. Not just the sound level but also the pitch. It’s a high pitch ‘scream’. Some sections are covered in asphalt, and on those the car averaged around 78-79 decibels, with high of 85, much more tolerable.

Suspension tuning is perfect, the car already started with little or no roll in corners, the ride is firm, but it soaks up bumps in one go, doesn’t oscillate more after the initial hit. Very enjoying ride.

There is zero visibility driver side 3/4. A car would appear in the central mirror through the pot hole, it then disappear with the hump blocking that view, and it doesn’t quite appear in the side mirror yet. Annoying. Passenger side is the same story, that hump in the back blocks off quite effectively. There was this one stretch a stupid driver decided to hang at my driver side blind spot for a good 5 miles.doesn’t pass me doesn’t slow down and just sit there. Being an asshole. I had enough and floored it for a good bit and don’t see that car anymore.

    Hmm, what else is there.

gas mileage. Through Washington with heavy traffic and constructions, car was doing about 26 mpg, think we average out to be 60ish mph. The hybrid system keep helping on the highway. But once I hit Montana with the much higher average speed, we basically sat at 90 mph for the whole state and most of South Dakota, the mpg drops to ~22mpg. Hybrid system offers no help at that speed.

Nick, I don’t believe the 918 was designed for long road trips.smiley

my biggest fear if I owned one and on a long trip, would be a mechanical breakdown in some of the States your driving through. The locals would not have a clue or wherewithal to help you.Smiley

    Re: 918

Haha it’s doable, doesn’t mean it’s best suited lol.

I have full faith in how Porsche made their cars, and also I had the car all checked up before I headed out.

As for not having a clue, well  Porsche mandated each dealer will have at least one personal, normally the foreman of the shop, to under go full 918 training. But I see your point, while Porsche has quite a sizable dealership network, they aren’t everywhere.

Arrived at Indy finally the day before. My 918 friend got in before I did. Staying at the JW and it happens to also be the official PCNA hotel, the lobby is decked out with Porsche stuff and also their fleet of Porsches are parked out front.

PCA, Porsche Club of America, made special arrangements for the two 918 attending, sandwiching a GT3 and a 73 RS. Many were amazed to my 918 there, they can’t quite compute I drove 2500 miles to get in. I purposely didn’t wash the car just so I can keep all the dirt and dead bugs on it.

There are more display cars inside the ground, and since it’s a full race weekend here, most of the garages are filled with race cars.

Porsche Classic Program is also hosting a restoration challenge and the finalists are on display inside.

Will take more pics later. Didn’t have time to post when we got in as there are friends I haven’t seen in 3 years and just basically drank till they closed. 2 nights in a row.

First time at the IMS yesterday. I am blown out of the water how big that facility is. 2.5 mile oval. When I stand on the pit wall looking at the front straight, it’s sooooooooooo long. But I know that’s just an illusion as the Indy cars are lapping it like 40 seoncds. The Cup cars and GT4 aren’t using the oval, they got the road course, slightly different than the F1 layout also. So lap times aren’t comparable but the fast kids are running 1:26s at practice.

sady I had to get back before sept 7th so I had to ship the car back instead of driving. Arranged a transport last minute.
