    Dashboard clock

    Am I the only one whose dashboard clock is losing about a minute every week or so? I reset it once about a month after I got the car, and now that the car is three months old I had to set the clock ahead seven minutes this morning. Aside from this MINOR inconvenience, my black/black 997 base has been perfect -- most trouble free new car I've purchase in the past ten years (and there've been seven others in that time frame).

    I'll be damned, it's not just me!!! I thought I was just going insane, as digital clocks are ALWAYS very accurate..... I thought..... I lose about two minutes a week. That's pathetic, is it not? I mean, that's the worst time-keeping device I've owned since my watches came out of cereal boxes and had to be wound by hand.

    Me too, about a minute a week. OK so the 997 isn't perfect. I think I'll return mine under the lemon law

    The "Lemon Law" is a Florida state law that allows you to return a car if you can prove pervasive defects that the manufacturer is unable to remedy 100% in a reasonable amount of attempts and/or time. Since you're in Greece, there's little point in explaining it further.

    Who cares about time? Man, I'm a nut for having all my clocks in the house, on my cell phone, and in the car, synchronized. Punctuality is a noble attribute, as being late is an insult and slap in the face to those who are waiting for you. It suggests that you think your time is more important than those who are waiting for you. Which means I like to keep an accurate clock, which means I'm constantly bumping mine a minute or two each week in my 997. It's a minor issue, hardly anything I'll ever lose sleep over. I just find it funny that such an expensive car has a clock that keeps time worse than something you'd get from a gumball machine!

    I take it that all of you guys that are losing time don't have Navigation....since the dashboard clock takes it's time from the Nav unit if it's installed (which in turn takes it's time from the Satelites) and these are atomic clock accurate.

    Yep, I don't have NAV, don't have any need for it, but I guess I get a wayward clock as a result.

    69, I do not have navigation -- my car is basically vanilla. Xenons, power seats, Bose, plus a few other items are the only options. I had satellite nav in my SL, so the clock was always perfect, even though the car was far from it. This 911 is so amazing that now I have to figure out what to do with my '04 X5 which has been gathering dust and cobwebs since the rain finally stopped here in LA.

    Thus : a PPC (Porsche precision clock) cost only 2k$ more... (NAV cost)

    Same thing here. I am very anal about keeping all my clocks and watches syncronized to the exact time. I was late for a meeting last week and realized later that the clock in the 997s was about 10 minutes slow. Which explained why I was late for the meeting. It never would have occured to me that the clock would be that much off.

    I find it weird that an expensive and brilliantly engineered car cannot keep time! If this is the only problem I have, I am a happy camper!

    Obviously, no one here today remembers Einstein's seminal work, published one hundred years ago this month, on the Special Theory of Relativity. In it, he explains that if you had a clock at your house and a watch on your wrist and went for a very quick run around the block, when you returned the watch on your wrist would be very slightly behind the clock that had not moved.

    Speed slows time down. In most cars this cannot be measured, but in an enthusiastically driven 911, it adds up to about two minutes a week, on average. At least, the way I drive.

    Drive a little faster and see if you can get it to lose more time.

    I took my 997S in for slow clock, dealer tech flashed something or someone and I'm now somewhere back in the future.

    Do you have navigation in your car? I assume most 997s do? I believe the clock should be synchronised by the GPS system?

    I got 04 cayenne. The clock is gaining 3-5 mins every week. Dealer still do not know how to check it unless I leave my car there for a week.

    Yes the flash did indeed fix my clock. No I don't have NAV.
    i can get lost without it. You know it never ceases to amaze
    me the number of dealer personell with head-up-butt desease.
    Do you know how to tell if they have it? Just ask a question they should know and you DO know. Then sit back and enjoy the show. For all you sales people out there try
    this: I don't know but i'll find out for you. Simple.
    The dealer fixed my clock and some other stuff in a couple
    of hours.

    So finally what is the procedure for putting this right ? Is it a reprogramming, or do they have to change any unit on the car ?

    Mr Duck, the dealership tech will flash your cars computer,
    in essence telling it to move forward or fall back. No replacement necessary.

    You're lucky you didn't tell the dealer your clock was gaining 12 to 20 minutes a month . He would want to keep the car 4 weeks to check it.
