Touareg Diesel is coming to US!

    From The Car Connection

    A Diesel for VW?

VW confirms it will bring a diesel version of the Touareg to the U.S. market during the first quarter of next year, powered by the V-10 TDI already in hot demand in Europe. Volkswagen of America is trying to counter recent trends by putting a heavy push on diesels, and the campaign is scoring with consumers, diesel sales jumping from 23,646 in 2002 up to 31,220 last year, when sales were damped by availability issues -- a problem that might come with the V-10 diesel, too. "I think you will see us get aggressive behind the diesel," says marketing and sales director Frank Maguire. At current rates, diesels could account for somewhere between 15 to 20 percent of total VW brand sales this year, perhaps topping the 60,000 mark. - Paul Eisenstein

Now this is an impressive vehicle I think. It is reported to get 25 miles to the gallon of diesel and have over 500 foot pounds of torque. I believe I have seen Weideking quoted as saying there would be no diesels in the Cayenne's future and I do see his point. But, still, a potent diesel like this could be an interesting option on the Cayenne and I think it would sell.

Re: Touareg Diesel is coming to US!

This is great news. With the government promising to put regulations in place which would raise the quality of our diesel fuels up to par with Europe, I think diesels are here to stay. There is no better market for diesel powered automobiles than in the SUV/truck market. 500ft-lb / 313hp @ 25mpg in an SUV, you can't beat that. Great job VW.

Re: Touareg Diesel is coming to US!

Maybe it has to do something with the rumor indicating that Touareg V10 Diesel sales aren't going as well as VW expected.

Is that just in Europe or is the Touareg diesel sold elsewhere?

Also I seem to recall that the pricing in Europe puts the V-10 Touareg on a par with the Cayenne S. Is this correct? If so, VW may be having a hard time getting customers to pay that much for what has traditionally been a manufacturer of less expensive vehicles.

no, a standard Cayenne S is about 60k Euros in Germany, whereas a Touareg V10 TDi is about 70k Euros (but there's more stuff standard than in the Cayenne, so it probably equals)...
Btw, they're now selling a V5 TDi also in Europe (starting at 38500 k Euros)...

Re: Touareg Diesel is coming to US!

    But GM,
You are misinformed, there IS a Cayenne Diesel!
It's called the Touareg V10TDI, same as there IS a Touareg Turbo! It's marketed as the Cayenne Turbo!
Seriously, between a Touareg V10 diesel and a Cayenne S, I'm not sure which one I'd take.
Now another interesting comparaison would be Touareg V8 vs Cayenne S.
I will problably get an SUV when I move to Scotland, but it'll be more an A to B vehicle, hence, my budget is lower but amongst the new car options, I am seriously considering the Volvo XC90 or the Touareg, both in V6 or maybe diesel, we'll see.
The issue is that both these vehicles are very popular in the UK and waiting list is minimum 8 months!
So maybe an X5 3L second hand, we'll see...
    Fanch.

Re: Touareg Diesel is coming to US!

i can recommend the X5, i used to drive one and it is really a very refined vehicle. 3.0i is a little underpowered though, i would go for the 3.0d -- you'll be glad about the extra-torque!

i think the volvo XC90 is a nice vehicle as well... with some nice ideas (optional 2nd rear seats row, children middle seat).

what i really like, a little bit strange maybe, is the new lexus RX300 (US: RX 330). i think it looks great and of what i've heard lexus offers good quality and service.

back to the cayenne: what really disturbed me when i tried out a porsche cayenne (i was just curious) at the dealership recently is that the rear windows CAN NOT BE LOWERED FULLY!!

can that be? when complaining the salesman said "well there is no space in the back door"... well then... can't VW/porsche, the self-complained elite of german car engineering, construct back doors that will allow to fully lower the rear side window? BMW can. and the merc ML as well probably.

RX 330 strange? Yes it is.

My neighbor just bought one and the styling is awkward. It is one of those highly stylized design efforts that will look really strange in ten years, even to those who think it looks good today. In many cases I think this is done intentially to get owners to move to the newer models as theirs begins to look dated. But service and build quality? yes I think so. Toyota is building the most reliable hardware on the planet right now and the Lexus dealers, at least in the US, have consistently and uniformily the best service available. Maybe it helps if the product your selling doesn't break much. Toyota dealers though are uniformly lousy in my experience.

Re: RX 330 strange? Yes it is.

well i think there's no accounting for taste but i personally do not like the looks of the cayenne and i doubt i will in 10 years time.

They like it. Except for the currently available motors. There is a lot of anticipation for the V-10 diesel.
