    Re: My goodness ..

I like the 997 better. I'm not crazy about the looks of the Cayman. But if I couldn't afford the 997, I might buy the Cayman. It's got potential. It's less expensive. There seems to be an extreme wide range of viewpoints here. Some love it and some hate it.

    Ugh.

I had higher hopes for this car.

The rear should've been a notchback. It looks too much like a 911. The renderings that Carlos did had more of a notchback shape and looked a thousand times better.

The front looks weak with the foglights. Out of all the new front ends, the 987 looks best and that's what they should've used. Porsche likes to share parts to keep costs down. Here's where they spent more money for zero gain.

The side profile between the top of the door and the top of the roof looks way too thick. Looks like the car is wearing a toupe.

And finally, the wheels are the ugliest things I've seen in a long time.

    Nice little Porsche

Someone screwed up on the translation. See my post above where I explained how this must have happened.

The first post about the aluminum chassis, I was referring to a translation I made from the German paragraph online. The second time I was referring to the fact that the OFFICIAL english version said it had an aluminum chassis.

I believe the spoiler extends vertically.

    Too slow, needs 911 3.8 S engine

Considering Road and Track tested the Boxster S at 0-60 in 5.0 seconds and the Cayman has more horsepower, bigger engine, and supposedly lighter weight, why so slow? If Porsche doesn't add more power, it could loose customers to new Z06.

Re: Too slow, needs 911 3.8 S engine

Demand would be higher is power was where it should be - 320bhp and make mine in Club Sport trim please. That would justify the higher cost....295bhp, pass. For the same $$ I'd rather have a 2003/2004 996 (not to mention the stigma). First thing I see is a Boxster with a hardtop.

Re: At Last! Triumph replace the GT6 Mk3

    I like it a lot!
    Thanks for the post RC!
The only thing I'm not sure about are the round fog lights, maybe bc I've gotten used to the Boxster ones.
But it's a detail, overall, it's a great looking car.
Interesting stuff re the alu chassis. I though Porsche was a steel lover!

    Cayman S - still undecided

Now that i've seen the official pics of the Cayman - i'm more unsure than ever! rear view is clearly the best, front ok, side v. awkward. Suppose i'll have to see it in the flesh and on real streets. The boxster looks good in pictures and amazing in the flesh, especially head on, and front 3/4. On this premise if the cayman looks ok in the pictures it should look good in the flesh. I also think a dark colour, such as midnight, black, or even red will suit this car much better.

Does anyone else think that from the rear 3/4 pic the colour looks like polar silver? Have my prayers been answered and this paint been brought back as a non-special order option?

Isnt that the same with all new Porsches? It then grows on people and most people end up liking it. Although I couldnt say for certain or find quotes or anything, but i'm sure plenty of people that didnt like the 997 at first now own one

    All this wait...and then this?

The car looks great from the rear, and the front is very close to a 987, so that's fine, too
The side is....well, let me put it this way: Whoever designed that needs to stop sniffing glue, smoking carpets and snorting coke..at the same time.
The car is almost as ugly as a Z3 with a hardtop. Day-uhm! The roofline and door contours are absolutely horriffic together.
Check this picture to see how os SHOULD have looked. The 997 is a textbook example of a great piece of classic Porsche design.
Never mind that the Cayman doesn't resemble the 997 or 987 - it doesnt have to, but IMO it's simply an un-Porsche design.

And those wheels. What went wrong? Looks like something that belongs on a Mazda 323.

And the price. Who are they kidding? Fixed roof cost MORE than a cabrio??
HELLO?? Sure, you get 15 BHP more, big deal, but that's some seriously clumsy pricing IMO.
Let's see how they are gonna sell a car that is less beautiful than the 987, no cabrio and costs more...

Probably drives like a dream...just close your eyes when you enter it

the bottom part is fixed, with the top half extendable. Shame not as flat as the boxster's.

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

    RC,

Thanks much for the pix. I like the looks very much . The curves are very nicely designed.

I'd say that in the US, the Cayman S should cost around 8000 USD more than the Boxster S. This is just an assumption, not a fact. It may be a little bit more or a little bit less.

Wow - that is alot more than a Boxster S. I would much rather have a Cayman than Boxster, but it's hard to swallow the extra $8k for a hardtop and mildly more powerful motor...

Re: All this wait...and then this?

Dr. Phil - You're right that the roofline of the Cayman isn't nearly as graceful as the 997, but maybe that extra tall profile above the side windows will allow for more headroom (I can't fit in a 996 with a helmet...).

Re: All this wait...and then this?

Wow. Right now, it looks really ugly, but I will reserve my final judgement until I se it with Classic 19's...

When I was first reading the posts and saw the one about the "aluminium chassis" I almost called my dealer and placed an order. Oh well...

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

I like the front and rear views. The side window profile looks like that of the current model Aston Martins, though the bulbous roofline breaks up the flow. Not for me, but may be worth a closer look.

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

    IMO
it has a really aggressive rear...

    impressive car to me..

I believe the headroom will be significant. Much more than on the 997.

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

    Looks gay to me.....sorry....

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

I'm happy with the design... only because it won't be confused with a 911!

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

Okay, I take it back ... This is the problem with commenting on little cropped pictures, you never see the details.

It's a nice looking car ... I'm still not sure about those fogs, but the 3/4 rear view looks great!

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

New here, signed up specifically because of these pics of the Cayman. I really like what Porsche is doing with this car. I've always been a P-car fan, but I've never liked the Boxster, and I've never been able to justify the 911 price tag (at least not here in Canada).

This is the car that could make me go to a Porsche. Seems like a more focused drivers car than what they're currently offering. Can't wait to see the actual production version, and am of course hoping the weight will be reasonable.

It'd look good in the garage next to my '04 S2000

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

Can't wait to see it, can't wait to drive it, just maybe, I'll buy it....

Re: At Last! Triumph replace the GT6 Mk3

    Hark! The Herald axles swing!

Triumph GT6 analogy is too funny!!!

You are too kind to the Cayman. Its an amorphous derivative blob that is too tall for its length and emits no love except to a fat girl who might mistake it for a large
    donut at night.

15hp? Whats the point of that? It only beats another Boxster. 325hp should have been in there and a sign on
the rear spoiler that pops up and reads "I eat Corvettes"

Como se "eats your checkbook" auf Porsche sprechen?=Cayman!

Porsche is becoming the sports car company expert at dissapointments. The Cayman simply has no stones.

You know for the price difference between a wimpy Cayman and a Corvette in the US, I can add huge Brembo brakes,
a custom steering rack, a six pack of Ferrari spray on mouse fur, yards of Connally leather, a truck load of German wool carpeting and decoupage a color picture of Zuffenhausen on its air cleaner.

The Cayman is just more proof that Porsche has surrendered
its desire to be the worlds premier sports car company.

    White trash ahoy!

Re: All this wait...and then this?

Time for my 2 cents.....The rear shot is ok....and so far, that's about it

Re: All this wait...and then this?

well i guess we all have to wait for the driving impression.....

Re: All this wait...and then this?

When the Trailer in the porsche homepage?
    I hope this morning

Re: Cayman Pictures and Data Online!

nice pictures! is it just me or does that Cayman S have PCCB? I really like the look of the front fog lights, very elegant and trendy looking! i just don't like the rims, the look like one of the rims you can get from BMW for the 5 series... but the car is not too bad overall!
