Oliver Blume follows Herbert Diess as Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Group

    • Oliver Blume takes over as Chairman of the Group Board of Management and remains at the same time Chairman of the Board of Management of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG
    • Supervisory Board introduces generation change and thanks Herbert Diess for his great accomplishments in connection with the Group’s transformation
    • Volkswagen CFO Arno Antlitz assumes additional role as COO on the Group Board of Management

    (22 July 2022)

From the Supervisory Board’s point of view, Herbert Diess in particular came up with a number of innovative product ideas, redesigned product portfolios and established the clear focus on electromobility. Groundbreaking platform-based approaches have been initiated such as, recently, in the case of battery cells as well as mobility services. He can be credited with the new organisational orientation of the group with more independent regions, the introduction of brand groups and series just as the new personnel orientation of top management and the members of the Brand Board of Management. In addition, the Group’s capital market focus has been advanced and the viability of key Group sites safeguarded.

In today’s meeting, the Supervisory Board also resolved that Group CFO Arno Antlitz will additionally assume the position of COO and thus assist Blume with day-to-day operations.

Born in Braunschweig, Oliver Blume joined the Volkswagen Group in 1994 and, since then, has held management positions for the brands AUDI, SEAT, Volkswagen and Porsche. He has been the Chairman of the Board of Management at Porsche since 2015 and a member of the Group Board of Management since 2018. “Oliver Blume has proven his operational and strategic skills in various positions within the Group and in several brands and has managed Porsche AG from a financial, technological and cultural standpoint with great success for seven years running. From the Supervisory Board’s point of view, he is now the right person to lead the Group and to further enhance its customer focus and the positioning of its brands and products”, said the Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Hans Dieter Pötsch. In addition, Oliver Blume, together with the entire Board of Management, is to continue to press ahead with the transformation – with a leadership culture that makes teamwork a top priority.

Doesn't seems like the CEO of VAG have a long shelf life.......

Let's see how long Blume can last.

But at least VAG will be heading by someone from the Porsche side again. Porsche is the crown jewel of VAG, business should be based around it. Leftovers from the Piech era are just about all gone. Good riddance.

Come Sept 1st, there is quite shuffle on VAG's executives. Our Porsche Canada CEO got reassigned to head off Audi France, he gets to go back to his home country.

Top executives from Volkswagen are also getting reassigned. Among others.

With current situation happening in Germany regarding energy crisis, some changes will be required but is that the answer?

You should check your statements in the above citation.  Diess joined Volkswagen in 2015, after a long successful career at BMW.  Meanwhile, Blume is the quintessential Volkswagen man having joined the company in the early 1990s before he moved to Porsche.  Additionally, Blume was raised outside of Wolfsburg so his entire life is immersed in the company.

Volkswagen Group in the U.S.’ CEO Scott Keogh is leaving too September 1st to head the creation of the new Scout EV unit.  His replacement is from Volkswagen Latin America.

Re: Porsche’s Oliver Blume replaces Herbert Diess as VW Group Chairman

    About what?

Blume spent the last few years as head of Porsche, he knows that company well and will know what's best to keep it going. I actually spent time talking to him in person before about Porsche, Same with his predecessor, Muller. Who was passionate about Porsche. Another 'company man'.

Diess was recruited from outside the company by the Piech fraction of the board. As it happened, I had also met the guy before. He doesn't carry the same passion for Porsche, he viewed it as a 'cash cow' of VAG.

You have to remember VAG is controlled by the Porsche clan and Piech clan, 2 factions that don't quite see each other eye to eye. Even when they are supposed to be 'one' family. One side view Porsche the company as the crowd jewel of the conglomerate, the other side doesn't.

Porsche SE welcomes decision to name Dr. Oliver Blume as chairman of the executive board of Volkswagen AG

Thanks to Dr. Herbert Diess for his commitment and for the successful repositioning of the Volkswagen group

Stuttgart, 22 July 2022. Volkswagen AG today announced, that its chairman of the executive board, Dr. Herbert Diess, will in agreement with the supervisory board resign from his position effective 1 September 2022. Speaking for Porsche Automobil Holding SE in its function as a major shareholder of Volkswagen AG, chairman of the supervisory board Dr. Wolfgang Porsche and his deputy Dr. Hans Michel Piëch thank Herbert Diess for his successful work over the years: “Herbert Diess strategically repositioned the Volkswagen group towards electric mobility. It is his particular merit, that the Volkswagen group today is in a strong position regarding the ongoing transformation.”

At the same time both spokespersons for the family owners welcome the decision of the Volkswagen supervisory board to name Dr. Oliver Blume as the new chairman of the executive board: “For years now Oliver Blume enjoys our explicit confidence. We are convinced, he will continue the successful development of the Volkswagen group and forcefully implement the necessary measures.” They referred to his achievements in the strategic repositioning of Porsche AG making the company an industry pioneer in sustainable mobility and leading it successful operationally. Against the background of a possible IPO of Porsche AG it therefore is essential that he heads and further develops the sportscar manufacturer also in the future.

Re: Porsche’s Oliver Blume replaces Herbert Diess as VW Group Chairman

"VW's billionaire clan plotted Diess ouster while he was on US trip"

    (24 July 2022)

    • Porsche-Piech family concluded Diess had to go as key project failures combined with worker discontent.
    • Diess, an outsider brought in from BMW, did not have enough allies at VW as problems mounted.

Volkswagen Group's dramatic move to oust its combative CEO, Herbert Diess, was set in motion a week ago, when his backing from the billionaire Porsche and Piech family began to crumble.

Unwavering support from the reclusive clan that majority-owns VW had helped Diess survive frequent clashes with powerful worker representatives. But as key project failures combined with worker discontent, the family concluded he had to go.

The decisive day was July 20, according to people familiar with the deliberations.

    DIESS'S DOWNFALL

The dramatic ouster of VW Group CEO Herbert Diess played out over 7 days:

    • July 16-17: VW board members discuss whether Diess should be replaced while he is in US
    • July 20: Key board members decide Diess must go. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume emerges as successor
    • July 21: Diess told of decision, given 24 hours to respond
    • July 22: VW board votes unanimously for Diess's ouster

The top committee of VW’s supervisory board, comprising family representatives, officials from the German state of Lower Saxony officials and labor leaders, determined that Diess's time was up. He learned this around lunchtime the next day, still jet-lagged from a visit to the automaker’s SUV factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

In the end, Diess's undoing is a brutal reflection of the challenges facing leaders of industrial behemoths trying to modernize for the digital age.

VW’s unions wield significant influence even by German standards, where worker representatives account for half the seats on supervisory boards. Their leaders and the state are resistant to drastic and expedient change that will compromise jobs.

While Diess excelled at setting a strategic direction for VW, his delivery ruffled feathers and the company’s execution has been patchy. The outsider brought in from BMW in 2015 did not accumulate enough allies and became increasingly isolated. Threats of cost cuts and delays developing software for the vehicles of tomorrow ultimately cost him his position.

"The departure of CEO Herbert Diess should not be a surprise given how marginalized he had become in recent months," Philippe Houchois, a Jefferies analyst, wrote in a report. "The timing is unfortunate and another illustration of dysfunction at VW."

Spokespeople for VW declined to comment on the events leading up to Diess’s dismissal.

    Momentum Builds

Momentum to remove Diess before VW's summer break started building last weekend during individual discussions among the eight-member presidium within its supervisory board. Diess was in the U.S. to shore up progress in a market where Europe’s biggest carmaker has long lagged.

While the top executive was away, key representatives of VW’s main stakeholders started contemplating who could replace Diess should tensions within the company worsen. There have been repeated flare-ups, including late last year, when Diess warned the company risked falling behind Tesla and mused about major job cuts.

In December, VW overhauled its management board, stripping Diess of some responsibilities while tasking him with leading CARIAD, the carmaker’s software unit.

Since then, discord at CARIAD has pushed back the scheduled rollout of important new models, including the electric Porsche Macan SUV. His struggle to muster broader support to execute his 89-billion euro ($91 billion) electric-vehicle and software strategy started to fray support among Porsche and Piech family members.

    The Successor

During the deliberations of the last week, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume emerged as the heir apparent with his long history of key operational positions at VW and track record of rejuvenating the sports-car division. As VW’s power players weighed pros and cons of putting a new leader in charge, they started to tilt toward making a change.

Hours after Diess returned from Chattanooga, he was hit with the decision and given 24 hours to respond. After consulting with legal advisers, he decided it was time to go.

Diess informed VW Chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch on Friday. A meeting of the company’s 20-member supervisory board was called for 4:30pm in Germany. Fifteen minutes before the start of the meeting, the presidium members informed their respective camps that Diess’s replacement was on the agenda. The board voted unanimously for his ouster.

Diess, credited with putting in place the industry's biggest EV rollout, will make way for Blume in just over a month. He’s likely still entitled to be paid in full under his contract through October 2025. Depending on the automaker’s operating results and share performance, the amount could reach more than 30 million euros.

Re: Porsche’s Oliver Blume replaces Herbert Diess as VW Group Chairman

Diess' only 'ally' in the company was Ferdinand Piech. But the later is long dead.

The younger Piechs no longer rebel against the Porsches like old Ferdinand did. It's nice to see them on the same side again.

But that top job is tough, let's see how long Blume will last.

Let's hope for a good replacement at Porsche.

They burned Muller in a similar move.

Re: Porsche’s Oliver Blume replaces Herbert Diess as VW Group Chairman

Porsche is succeeding today because of the hard earned branding of their sport car. Slowly but surely the branding is being tarnished. For now they have the media on their side but if they continue down the path they're on, they could become another Maserati or AM.

One can't only make sports car and survive.

It is what it is. It's the Macans and Cayennes that enable Porsche to keep making great sports cars for us.

    https://insideevs.com/news/600575/volkswagen-group-fired-diess-because-software-unit-fiasco/

CGX car nut here could be onto something about CARIAD.

But then again, Diess' biggest mistake was to 'chase' Tesla. Pointless. Stupid. Wasteful. Uninformed. You name it.

Why does VAG need to target Tesla? Mercedes is going to fire their CEO too if he start 'chasing' Lada. OR Jaguar for that matters.

VAG's strength is manufacturing, integration. Software was never their forte. And software is mostly fluff, in order to cover up a lack of proper engineering. Who needs a touch screen to control windows, or wipers, or whatever when a proper engineered switch can do the job perfectly and cheap? What' next? Tocuhsreen control for braking and throttle? Steering too just to one up on Tesla? Diess lead them down a path of their weakness. Even BMW had already admitted that touchscreen controls are a mistake and is over done and needed to be winded back.

If something is properly engineered and tested, there is no need to do OTA update in order to 'fix' problems.

My 1994 Porsche is still working perfectly fine, 28 years later, nothing is wrong.

My 8 year old 918 is also working perfectly fine, nothing gone wrong, even with some 'updates' from Porsche. It's recent service was just done, I was told there was a software update but I did not noticed anything improved or changed. Properly 'engineered' car. The update was for the A/C unit🙄 and they put a new sticker on the charger.

My Taycan, Taycan's actually. Have way too many 'updates'. Porsche rushed them out, for sure. Even the 'Improved' Cross Turismo still aren't perfect. There were charger updates, controls updates, think climate control updates, and a host of others. Climate control on the Taycan is shit. Why put it on a touch screen to start off with. And what's wrong with a button by the sill with opening the trunk or hood? Why is there a need to take away those buttons and put those on a touch screen? Air vents is another. Why they have to copy Tesla and do touchscreen control vents? What's wrong with hand control directions? And why do I need to dig 10 levels down on the menu system to get to where I wanted to? Because Tesla do it that way? 🙄

One thing I know, Blume isn't a fan of too many controls shoved into the touch screens, so hopefully VAG will dial back that trend and move stuff back to where they are suppose to be.

Imagine F1 cars steering wheel controls are all on a touchscreen, and seeing Verstappen and Leclerc struggled to touch what they want while driving. 😱

Touch screens in vehicles for controlling anything more than the infotainment are a way to fool customers into thinking it's modern and futuristic when in fact it's manufactures saving costs, screens are cheap and simple, but I'm practice are much more inferior ergonomically thatn physical noobs and buttons... do you see many touchscreens on planes, racecars, motorcycles, etc where ergonomics and function are most important?

Just to be clear, we are talking about  "touch"screens taking the role of physical buttons in moving vehicles like a car, not about digital screens displaying information on vehicles, those are very useful.

Cost saving is the key. All those switches adds up. Not to mention logistics of arranging suppliers to deliver. Elon did that to streamline his manufacturing process and get his cost down in order to turn a profit way back then. Doesn't mean it's the best way to do things but some how every manufacturers copied that thinking it's hip to do so.

Look no further for the advantage of physical buttons tactile feedback than computer keyboards. A good typist can easily do 60wpm without looking, the same typist will struggle to do even 20 wpm using a touchscreen keyboard without looking, like the one on an iPad.

Touchscreens needed to be looked at in order to be used, that draws away the driver's attention from driving the car. It really has no place in an automobile. Unless of course the car can drive itself, which Elon bills his cars can do.

Show me a brand where the thrill is still present...

Marketers have taken over everywhere; it's over. Few exceptions left where there is designer with a vision, and they are mostly unattainable, not very useable, and in most cases not my cup of tea (GMA, Koenigsegg, Pagani).
