    Turbo to a E55.

I am also at this point where I find the Turbo too harsh for everyday use. The car have been siting in the garage for more than 3 months without driven. The X5 and C32 have been my daily driver, I somehow don't see the need for a Turbo for everyday use and haven't been to the racetrack don't even remember how long. Another contributing factor, there are no good roads within an hour from home and no time to for a road trip to explore some good mountain passes when my girlfriend is around 24 7....

E55 seem to be the best choice for my situation and everyday use. I have been tempting to get rid of it for a E55. I am afraid to make this decision, because it simply means that I am getting rid of 'all' the sport cars in my garage. The sad thing is, I am only 23 years old... People are sitting in a Lotus Elise without air-conditioner at that age.. But now, I think a Turbo is too harsh... I am getting old mentally...
I will have my mid-life crisis when I am 35... sigh

    Re: Turbo to a E55.

    William,
It's not that you are too old, it's that you need to move on IMO.
Why don't you go for an SL55AMG with the Performance pack, it's the same engine as the E, not more sporty to drive but looks and sounds more sporty and you get 2 cars for the price of one!
    Fanch.

    Hmm...

I don't see the need for a SL55 either if I can have a 4 door and same or better performance. I even thought about a E55T instead of E55. LOL, The sportiest car in my garage will be a Mini Cooper after all

I might just buy myself a Gt3 if I miss driving a sport car again... The only problem is that the C32 and E55 will be a redundent pair.

What do you think about C32 to E55 and Turbo to GT3 instead? One dedicated track car and rest for daily use? It make much more efficient sense.

    Re: Hmm...

well i am not asked here, but exactly that is what i'm going for now: one extreme car for the heart and the emotions, and one as a daily driver.

E55 and GT3 are a perfect combination IMO.

That will be a great combo.

There will be no reason for a Turbo when a E55 can be as fast or faster for everyday from point A to B.

A GT3 can satisfied my sport car appeitie...

I think I will go with this route now. It will be too brave for me to make such a decision of getting rid of all the sport car. At least not until married and have kids...

    Re: alternatives

i agree-- the TT is the perfect supercar meets daily driver. but IMO it lacks fascination, it is too perfect and too common (at least in my city). if you've got only ONE car and do not need rear seats, this would be my #1 choice.

i personally admire ferraris and have a running order for the 360 successor. although i am thinking about cancelling this and going for the limited GT3 RS (if there's still any chance to get one...).

youngtimers are also great -- countach, miura...

    difficult decision

I can't buy a Ferrari or Lambo due to image reasons unfortunely. I used to have one and sold it. My heart still belong to the Ferrari though

GT3RS will be the best choice, but the level of difficulty to get one and most likely it won't be avaliable for the U.S. Regular GT3 seem to me the best choice so far.

    Re: Turbo to a E55.

William, the E55 is a great car and very fast but it is no car for a 23 year old who wants to have fun. I'm missing the emotion involved with my 996 Turbo, one reason why I like the E55 very much but I can't say I really love it. It is an impressive piece of car, AMG did a wonderful job to make a huge limousine fast. But it is no sports car and it gets boring if you don't need the additional space for family and kids.
You want to know what the perfect car for the US is (I know you don't want your university employees feel bad about your cars)? Buy a US car and get it tuned. Buy a Corvette or a Viper and I'm sure you won't attract as much attention as with a AMG Mercedes. Or buy the CL 65 AMG which is a pretty classy, classic and not very spectacular car but it "eats" most Porsche and Ferrari for breakfast. You could also wait for the SL 65.
But honestly: get a car for your emotions too.
Why no Ferrari or Porsche for fun and a US car (like a huge SUV, maybe tuned with a supercharger) for driving to University?

Again: the E55 is fun and fast but I never can attach to it emotionally as I did with my former 996 Turbo. Sad but true.

RC, you only have the car for one week or so, give it some time, and you can become more attached emotionally in the near future.

I doubt it. I really like the E55 and I really have fun with it, no doubt about it. But emotionally, I need something mean, something smaller, something loud and some kind of an eye-catcher. My heart is the one of a sports car driver, not of a high power limousine driver.
My wife suggested a Ferrari Maranello (or it's successor) in about four years, to have space for the kids too in the rear. I might listen to her...

    Not so easy for me

Actually, I am done with University. There are other factors like bad economy, conservative family values, image among employees....etc To be honest, I already have a lot more freedom being in the U.S. compare to being at home. When I am back in hk, I will be driving a Audi A4 3.0 or a C320 instead. A Porsche in America is pushing it, a Ferrari is way out of line at this point. Someday, Christian, someday, I will have a car just for my emotional involvement and hide it somewhere near Nurburgring Take a holiday trip just for driving....

My X5 is really great, very subtle and yet reasonably fast... A E55 will be perfect for highways. Turbo is hardly ever used to its potential because of lack of good roads around my area and no time for track day. Come to think about it, GT3 seem too much, maybe a Lotus Elise will be enough.

    CLK55AMG Compressor

I think it is a fantastic combo personnally.
    GT3 + E55, way to go.
Although, if I were you (we seem to be of similar age) and it depends if you have a lot of passengers on a regular basis, but you didn't seem to like the SL55 aternative to the E55. Cabs are great though!
To me, it's just that the E is a bit of an exec car, you know what I mean, family, big car, old guys...(Sorry Christian, I couldn't help it )
If you don't fancy the SL, have you thought about the CLK55AMG?
The stock version has only 367hp NA V8, but on demand, AMG will put the E and SL55 engine in the CLK55.
Should be a blast, the car looks great IMO, definitly more "sporty" than the E.
It's no 996 Turbo substitute, that's for sure, but you'd have the GT3 for that.
    Fanch.

    Re: CLK55AMG Compressor

William I don't think you will have an easy time getting an Elise imported. I have never seen one in the US that wasn't on a track.

I think a 996TT or GT3 would be a great choice. I can't think of much of anything else (besides Ferrari) worth buying. Perhaps M3/M5 - sedan like E55, but you can still shift for yourself.

    Re: CLK55AMG Compressor

U.S. version of the Elise comes out in mid-2004.

Rumor has it that the car could have as much as 200hp from a Toyota engine and a 6-speed gearbox....or so my dealer tells me.

    Still waiting to see

How Bangle or BMW going to style the M5, I doubt they can do anything to save it from the fundementally strange design of the 5 series.

I think M5 could have been my first choice, great performance, fun, SMG gear box. Shame on you BMW!

CLK V8 Compressor is a great choice also if I don't have a sport car! But if I get a 2 door car, I would rather get a sport car

William, somehow I completely forgot about Bangle for a minute. I still had the E46 / E39 generations in my mind.

I wonder how many would-be BMW M drivers will follow your decision with respect to Bangle's design...
