    'S' or 996 Turbo

As the title suggests, I am looking for some input as I am torn between a new 997 2S and a late model, sub 10k mile 996 turbo at virtually identical prices. I can test drive an S, but not the turbo.

Just wondering what you guys think are the biggest pluses, minuses of each car and why I should choose one over the other.

I did a search with the hope of finding this info already, but without luck.

    Thanks for your help!

    Kevin

    Re: 'S' or 996 Turbo

they are quite different cars... depends on what you want really... if this helps my dad owned a 996 turbo, he now owns a 997s and he thinks his 997s is the best porsche he has had. I drove a 996 turbo, not much at all. The turbo is hugely powerful, etc. The 997s is obviously a bit less raw power but I really think the interior and fit and finish of the 997s is way above the 996 turbo.

Check them both out... go testdrive both - thats a must.

Have fun with yuor search... also consider the fact that the turbo is AWD and the 997s is RWD... i think RWD is much better.

    Re: 'S' or 996 Turbo

I think the 996 HP advantage is cancelled out by (or at least equal to) the completely new features of 997/S.
Plus you get a longer warrenty.

    Re: 'S' or 996 Turbo

This is a common conundrum, and has been discussed previously. There is as ever, no completely right or wrong answer . There are all the variables 2WD versus 4WD, weight versus power and torque etc etc. In the end, I think it all boils down to your car ownership history and in particular Porsche ownership history. If you have never had a Porsche my view is you should start with 2WD to get the real 911 driving experience (light front, heavy back, steering gently wiggling in your hands and telling you what's going on). If you have had a 911 before and not had a Turbo then go for the Turbo. Either way you will not be disappointed .

    Re: 'S' or 996 Turbo

I ended up from a 543 HP highly modified 996 Turbo with a 997 Carrera S with 20 mm chassis. Did I regret it? Definetely YES. Do I love my 997 Carrera S? Definetely YES.
Would I go back to a 996 Turbo after owning the 997 Carrera S? Probably not because there a lots of things I like on the 997 much better like the much nicer interior, the exterior of course too, the second generation PCCB (which is a treat in my opinion), the PSE, the chrono sport package, the new PSM setup, etc. What I miss from my 996 Turbo is that BRUTAL power I had all the time available at my throttle foot. This is why I'm trying to get a 997 Turbo sooner or later when it'll be available.

Yes, both cars provide a lot of fun but you really have to sort out what you want. Do you want brutal power? Go for the 996 Turbo. Do you want the newest 911 generation with some substantial steering/suspension improvements, not to speak about exterior/interior changes, go for the 997.

For most people, the 997 Carrera S power output is just right, especially for those who come from a BMW M3 or a Mercedes SLK/CLK AMG. The 996 Turbo is a different league, it can be a very dangerous car too because I assure you that you're always faster than you think you are. This never happened to me in my 997 Carrera S.

I know it is a tough choice, I had to choose between the 997 Carrera S and a 996 GT3 last year, both at the same price tag. I went for the 997 Carrera S instead and the 996 GT3 still sits in my dealer's showroom...for more than 10000(!) Euro below MSRP.

Another possibility would be to wait for the 997 Turbo and save some more money until it shows up.

Good luck with your choice, you can't really go wrong.

BTW: you should also take in consideration maintenance and insurance cost, I think they both are higher on the 996 Turbo. A 996 Turbo engine costs half a fortune if it has to be exchanged, 997 parts are much cheaper to replace.
I would NEVER buy a 996 Turbo from a private person because you can end up with a lot of repair cost. Buying from an official Porsche dealer may cost you more but over here in Germany you get a used car warranty which is worth gold. I suppose it is the same in the US.

    Re: 'S' or 996 Turbo

Thank you everyone for your input!

I've never owned a 911. I've just always dreamed of owning one since I was a kid, and finally have the chance!

Well, my wife is really pushing me towards the 997, although I must admit that the brutal power of a legendary turbo is very tempting. I am actually leaning towards the 997S at this point.

I would LOVE to trade the PASM, though, for the -20mm option, although I know it is not available in the states as of yet. Does anyone know if this is coming down the pipeline for us???

If you can afford it, get the 2006 997 (one year after release), so that the bugs get worked out. Then, when the 997 turbo comes out, wait one year again to allow the bugs to get worked out, and then get the turbo. That should get you at least two years in the 997.

For me, I got the first year run of the 997 because I was anxious, but am pleased with the result. Now, I can wait a little while for the turbo, because I'm not as anxious.

    Re: 'S' or 996 Turbo

I think RC said it correctly (for me at least), the Turbo is in a different league; unless you really know what you are doing it's scary car to own/drive.

    Re: 'S' or 996 Turbo

Get the 997 now and get on the 997 turbo list. Anyway, the 997 turbo is at least a couple of years away. That's a long time to wait.

It can be a handful at high speeds but I really don't see the 996 Turbo as a scary car to drive, more so the 996 GT2 or the 360 Modena to stay in the same price category.

I agree, you also get a used car warranty here in SA, but on the older models it's normally just a year. Better than nothing I guess
