I think that that difference is emphasized by the red stripe between the taillights, this horizontal accent makes the car look larger , take it away and the effect will be less.
To give a comparison look here for the normal 996 with a similar stripe: here
Also has the 996 a straight cut bumper , which also makes the line off the back larger

I liked the rear reflector too - anything that ties in with the 993 looks good to me (okay, I'm a throw-back)
I don't think an aftermarket reflector will be feasible on the 997c4s, because the rear bumper no longer lines up with the break lights with a flat, horizontal seam.
I love the pic in that link - including the spoiler. To have the 993ish body, with the present-day 996/7 driveability would really be something.

I'm one of those who really didn't like the red stripe, cheap!
As I wrote before, very nice on old air cooled models where the red stripes belonged to one line and much lower on the car body but on the 996, it really looked like a cheap add on.
Here's a comparison of the 996 C4S with and without the red stripe. I wonder if you can order a bodycolor strip from Porsche Exclusive..
