Re: Where do you guys go for track day events in So California?
Buttonwillow near Bakersfield or Willow Springs, up north of Lancaster. Buttonwillow is more of a driver's course, lots of configurations, lots of different corners. Willow Springs is a high hp course, with one very fast corner that you don't want to get wrong. I would recommend BW as the more fun course.

Probably the closest place to Newport is Cal Speedway, which is about an hour away. Sometimes you get the chance to run the infield. Speedventures sometimes has them and Symbolic Motors is looking for people to sign up with them for a June event.
Willow Springs also has a more technical, lower speed track called the Streets of Willow. I second the recommendation for Buttonwillow. There are also a few nice tracks near Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe. Nor Cal has a few nice ones as well.
You're going to have to drive a bit, and maybe even stay overnight somewhere to get in a good track day if you live in SoCal. Otherwise, you are stuck with autox (which is better for learning car control IMO).

Come down to Qualcom Stadium West Lot in San Diego this Sunday the 15th, and see what San Diego Region PCA autocross is all about.... not your typical autox, more like a mini track at lengths in excess of 1 mile and sections where you will be in 3rd gear..... Check us out and come out and play! http://www.pcasdr.org/home/index.html
