Fair enough, Nick, and I can understand why Porsche has positioned the RS as a more track extreme model, in part because of external competition and because they made the 992 GT3 so capable.

Here is a sort of simple answer for your question on the new RS.

RS was supposed to be a track car that's can be licensed and driven to and from the track, it's not a street car that can be used on the track, that would be the GT3's job.

RS aren't supposed to be street friendly, they are a track weapon.

The 992 GT3RS went the extreme route simply because they don't want the car to be a boulevard cruiser or car and coffee car. They made the GT3 for that purpose. Or the turbo S. 

They had gone soft with the 991 GT3RS models, but now they are back on track with the 992s. Remember the 997 GT3RS aren't too street friendly cars to start off with. 

Think of the new GT3RS as one step down from the GT3 Cup car, not one step UP from the GT3. 

For street use, GT3 or turbo S are the top dog. 

The new GT3 is a pretty focused track car as well, imo.  It’s more track than street (and RS even more track).  There are many other 911 versions that are street focused…

The new RS will be the first real track car off the shelf. I think they purposely position this car for those who take it to the track vs those who just bought the RS badge just to have the top dog for the streets. I think it will be a pig on normal B roads - maybe it's also to push GT3 sales.

Understood.  I don't know what the economics are in CH, but here it would be possible to trade a 4RS to a 3RS without any significant cost (or even a profit in some cases) with the right dealer relationship.

In any case, you are going to have lots of fun with the 4RS

Well guess I'll shift from begging for a non-existent GT4RS allocation to a GT3RS allocation

This was posted on Rennlist. It captures my feeling about 3RS.

"Those side scoop things look awkward. Its too much black plastic tacked on to the car, gives it a very sharp edged almost like a lambo look unlike a Porsche we know. On a bright color, it will be too much cheap plastic contrast.

The rear wing from the back literally looks like a plane wing. Really disproportionate and big. Then you look at the rear decklid and its tiny compared to the wing. The previous RS had a really proportionate wing to the car and to the decklid. This one is like someone designed a wing but didnt think about how it would fit with the test of the car.

Then you have no frunk space and tires that now will cost probably $1,000 each due to size. With ADM, $400-450k is possible. I think its safe to say that we have crossed into this impractical car area that looks out of place, too aggressive, too expensive. 997 cars were too rough and hard to drive everyday. 992 in some respects got too refined and too modern. 991 is just perfect amount of motorsport, practicality, rawness, cost.

There is a saying, dont fix it if it aint broken. When you try too hard unfortunately you end up pushing the envelope too hard in areas and that usually means compromise in other areas. I can drive my RS to the beach, to park, to school. It attracts attention but its really in a porsche classy way. This wing will be visible from a 1/4 mile away before you can tell which car it is you are looking at. You’ll see a little bubble and a flat table on it thats moving around. Its too much.

Then I bet this one also has cracking glass, dusty brakes, oil that only 50% of it comes out, insane road noise. These were things that just worked. Why mess with it? Whats the point? Why go backwards? If the old car also had these issues and we complained, then you’d be justified to say GT3 isnt for you. It only drains half the oil. It has insane tire noise. Glass is considered consumable and expect to replace glass every 3-6 months. Ceramic GT3 brakes dust like crazy. But none of these were true before. Porsche somehow got this wrong.

This RS is like a cup car with plates and that was never RS. GT3 was always a sports car you could track but daily more. RS was a track car you could also daily but daily it less. This is plain and simple race car except it has airbag, turn signals, and audio. It sounds cool but could you live with it and put 10,000 miles? I know I put 10,000 miles on my RS and I cant stop driving it.

10,000 miles is not a lot. Lol. Since when do ceramic brakes generate so much dust?  The oil comes out 100% you just have to know where to drain it.  Hard core RS driver eh?

From where do you drain the other half of the oil (you only get half out by draining oil tank and engine sump - even Frank Steffen Wallinser confirmed this is correct to a friend)?  The factory workshop manual doesn’t say.  Brake dust is a result of new Copper-free pads dictated by California environmental regs.

Rumor here is that the price of the 3RS could be above 300k . 4RS is 180k. A huge difference that even with the appreciation of the 4RS would not be enough ( I can't imagine the 4RS fetching realistically  more then 30k  above list.) When I ordered the 4RS,  plan was to trade 4RS for a 3RS, but now it is a bit soon. I want to live at least one season with the 4RS.  All will also depend on how much I like the 4RS and what the 3RS is all about.

And that is literally an expanded version of what I just said earlier.

The new GT3RS is going to be a Cup car with plates. 

To answer your other question, no, I am not getting one, nor will it compete with the GT4RS. There is no point for me to get one. I already have a race car, which when the time comes I will replace it with another, there is no point or need to get a street car to try and do that job. But someone else will think it's a great idea to get a new GT3RS to be their track toy.

But for me, I would much rather have the RSR than the new GT3RS.

Me, too.  Don't really want any more track toys but my son-in-law thinks the GT4RS is just right.  So I'll drive it for a year or two (sparingly ... probably only break-in) and then sell it to him as a used car.
