“New Porsche 911 GT3 RS spotted undisguised” (Evo magazine)

    04DCD5AB-4E28-413A-B670-02D6E6085403.jpeg

Big aero and bespoke bodywork are on the cards for Porsche’s next 911 GT3 RS

    (21 June 2022)

An undisguised example of the forthcoming 992-generation Porsche 911 GT3RS has been spied on the roads around the Nürburgring, providing a first look at the frankly astonishing aero package it’ll feature when it’s officially revealed later this year.

This latest 992 generation 911 GT3 RS takes the theme of more aero and less weight to the extreme compared to its forebears, with significant new aero elements to rival Porsche’s current 911 GTE PRO class racer.

As with previous generations of RS, the latest model will follow its predecessors by utilising the wider Turbo shell, although for the 992 RS Porsche has gone further still by designing bespoke bumpers, front wings and a new bonnet.

A creased and scalloped front bonnet incorporates two large openings to channel air through and out of the front compartment, which will be home to the RS’s cooling requirements. Wider front wings feature deeper vanes than before atop the front wheels to extract high-pressure air within the arches.

To further the aero cause the lower third of the front wheel arch has been scalloped away with a vertical vane in its absence designed to clean up airflow as it exits the front wheel area. This new aero vane is connected directly to an extended side sill. More vertical vanes are fitted to the outer edges of the front bumper and there’s a more defined splitter to channel air under the car.

The roof features a double-bubble profile, first seen on the 997 generation Sport Classic, and further back there are two subtle fins to clean up the airflow before it hits the RS’s most dramatic aero device – its huge wing.

As with the GT3, its swan neck uprights are mounted directly to the chassis through the plastic shroud at the base of the rear screen, but they're far more substantial, with a more sophisticated mounting system offering a wider range of adjustment.

As per the front, a pair of aero vanes are fitted to the outer edges of the rear bumper and around the rear arches, which again feature cutaway sections. The rear diffuser itself doesn’t look dramatically bigger than the base GT3.

It also looks like this will be the first 992 model without flush-fitting door handles – the electronic door handle and its accompanying mechanism were obviously deemed too heavy.

The GT3 RS’s powertrain is expected to retain the atmospheric 4-litre flat-six engine and PDK combination of the 992, but whether they’ll feature a substantial power hike over the base GT3 remains to be seen. A seven-speed PDK will almost certainly be the sole transmission available as Porsche continues to allow its RS products to focus on out and out performance. A Weissach package is expected to be on the options list too when the car makes its global debut later this year.

"Form follows function" design taken to a new level. This car looks so radical.

After front 'flicks' (canards / dive planes), we now have roof 'fins'. Anticipating soo many applications for the wrong reasons (on non RS cars). Will be entertaining!

    Yes, it's an active wing

Finally a 992 that looks OK... dramatic and exuberant !

Wow... I wouldn't be surprised if what we see is the equivalent of the Weissach Package. I can imagine a slightly less radical version as well, 'cause this is quite polarizing I think.

@nberry, l think it may be the same in your neighborhood, but in my little city, there is a looooot of street eye candy around. As my dealer told me, a lot of semi-race cars he has sold have never seen a track…but at least, these people drive a  hardcore P. Smiley …. I do not mind, though….

I don’t track my cars so I wonder how much of a difference does having a huge would have on performance. I suspect it all depends on the track and driver. Maybe a second or two in time at the cost of looking foolish with the humongous wing.mail

With all that said, An exciting exterior color will ameliorate somewhat visually the outrageous wing. angry

This is the first RS with active aero and it is going to make an enormous improvement to its lap time at the Nordschleife…

Grant, I get the time improvement on the Ring but most tracks are less than two miles. Smiley Who would take this car out for dinner, shopping or whatever. The whole point of Porsche is usability and performance.

The whole point of an RS is having a race car with a warranty and license plates (no need for truck and trailer) and the ability to drive on the Nürburgring TF days (must be street legal) Smiley

This is the car you should be looking at (except you hate Manuals) Smiley:

2023 Porsche 911 ST Heritage Prototype - Tribute to 1970 Racing Model Caught Testing At Nürburgring - YouTube

Basically an RS without the Wing/Aero and the PDK (and will be a seriously appreciating asset).

Also, there is a track over 6 miles long (about 10 km) that is an easy drive from San Diego (near Las Vegas):

Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch - Wikipedia

But the new RS is going to be faster at all road courses (both Nordschleife and small domestic ones).  Active aero means both high downforce in corners and braking zones and low drag on the straight sections (best of both worlds).

I don't like the wind either and think it's going too far for a car with plates, but to be fair it's an "RS", it was never meant to be used for going shopping or going out to dinner, neither this or any of the previous generations, that's off label use by some customers.

The performance and usability in this model applies specifically to the usability and performance at the track, not the street, for that they have  other models better suited. And for the track, it excels at usability and performance.

So if you can't take this shopping, it's not Porsche's fault, you are looking at the wrong model for your needs, previous generations may have allowed that, but that's not the point of this car.

So while I don't like this wing, I think it's comically big, in a track setting I have not problem with it at all, the problem for me is when you drive the car on the street to go to a track or for a mountain road drive.

    Re: 992 GT3 RS

Let me explain myself. I love Porsche's quality, durability, performance and usability. I have never thought Porsche as an attractive stylish car. Porsche epitomizes function over form. Though I do not track my cars (been there done thatindecision) I enjoy exercising the cars in appropriate settings. They are an entertainment pod for me and I'm a better driving in them.

With that in mind, I seek Porsche models that standout because of their uniqueness and are near or at the apex of Porsche models. The GT3 and RS meet those criteria. What I can't tolerate is to look like I'm driving a car that got lost on a track and inadvertently found itself driving on public streets. That's not the attention I want. The wing is a Cup car wing and only belongs on a track

I have no doubt the 992RS will be performance monster. But it's not a street car regardless of how Porsche characterizes it. It's hideous wing tarnishes the overall look of the car. Hopefully, a color other than black will enhance its appearance. Gnill posted above the car in orange which didn't look too bad. Not sure if it was photoshopped.

All this may be moot for me. After 20 years with my dealer, new management has informed I would get one of the first allocations but they will be seek a minimum of $120,000 over MSRP..... probably more since they will spec and auction the cars. I'm loving my 991.2GT3 RS and it would be hard for me to give it up. They made my decision easy.
