Leclerc hit with 10-place grid penalty for Canadian GP

    (17 June 2022)

Leclerc was forced to retire from last Sunday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix while leading the race after a failure on his engine that Ferrari has since confirmed left it “beyond repair”.

It was the latest reliability setback for Leclerc in a tricky period that also featured him retiring when leading in Spain due to a problem on his power unit, leaving Ferrari facing potential grid penalties.

Ahead of Friday’s practice for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, the FIA confirmed Ferrari had taken a fresh engine, MGU-H, MGU-K, and control electronics, all within his season allocation.

But following the conclusion of FP2, a second document from the FIA confirmed that Leclerc had taken another new control electronics, his third of the year.

As this exceeds the season limit of two control electronics, it has triggered a 10-place grid drop that Leclerc will take on Sunday.

The primary concern ahead of the weekend lay with Leclerc’s turbocharger after the fresh one introduced in Azerbaijan was wiped out by the power unit failure. However, he still has a usable one within his season pool that meant no change has been required so far.

Speaking this morning, Leclerc conceded it was “not the best position to be in” facing penalties so early in the season.

“This is one of the tracks where it is quite easy to overtake, but there are also tracks in the next three or four races where it’s quite easy to overtake too,” Leclerc said.

Although Max Verstappen topped both FP1 and FP2 for Red Bull on Friday in Montreal, Leclerc managed to the end the day second-fastest, just 0.081 seconds shy of the best time in the afternoon.

While he will currently only drop 10 places, Ferrari could look to take advantage of the setback and introduce other new parts to the pool if it deems a back-of-grid start to be worthwhile.

AlphaTauri driver Yuki Tsunoda is already confirmed to be starting the race from the rear of the field after the team took a complete new power unit for the weekend.

Typical Ferrari. The cars have potential but something explodes, this time quite literally, within the team. One was looking for Chuck to challenge MV as that would be good for the sport.  However, at this time, this is becoming exceedingly a distant wish.

BTW- Lewee really has a bone to pick with Merc if he has suffered spinal damage like permanent disc compression, if anyone understands that it's me -- and it would explain why he's gone public criticizing the team if they sold his health down the river.

If so after all the wins he's delivered for Merc, it shows deep cold heartedness by the team.

Tesla, powered by the child labor from the Democratic Republic of Congo and before the resident Tesla fanboi goes ballistic, regardless of what Musk May say, there is no discernible way to determine the origins of that cobalt metal in the supply chain.  Since Congo mines over 70% of the worlds cobalt supply annual, this material remains a large part of the Tesla supply chain.

It comes down to Toto and the rest of the Mercedes organization putting their drivers and potentially others at risk for a poorly designed car.  Sad and definitely agree that it is harming Hamilton and Russell.

And he is just a driver, like Verstappen, Leclerc, Senna, Prost, and everyone before, and coming up after.

Drivers are consumables. They come and go. Teams however stay on.

2 cars are entered by every team for each race, and the team fill them with 2 drivers every weekend. It's as simple as that. Hamilton caught covid and can't race, Mercedes replaced him with Russell. Schumacher broke a leg and can't start, Ferrari replaced him with Salo. Senna gone? Williams replaced him with Coulthard.

F1 is a constructor championship. That's what pays prize money. WDC titles sounds nice, but it simply is the consequences of piloting the fastest car for that season, and the team with the fastest car will always want the best driver to drive for them in order to maximize the point haul.

Time for Mercedes to write-off this car and this season.  It needs to increase the ride height to preserve LH and GR whilst fighting it out with Haas.

I was out tonight and I missed the qualifying, why are the grid positions so scrambled, I mean why the heck is Alonso in P2 for example? was it the rain that played Eeny, meenyminymoe with the drivers and mixed them up?

Alonso was super quick in FP3 just before qualifying. The rain had neutralized the faster cars' advantage.

He did a super human last lap to take over P2. For some reason his performance in wet condition had improved immensely over the beginning of his career. Before, he is super quick in the dry but disappeared once there is moisture, but after his break from F1 he certainly made some adjustments on how he drives in the wet, it shows.

Track was drying and everyone was on Inters. Russel made a gamble to go on soft and he promptly crashed out at turn 2.

At one point Hamilton was lining up at P2, before Sainz overtook him, and then at the very last moment Alonso. If you can find it, go check out his onboard for the last qualifying lap.

There is a good chance he is going to lead the GP after turn 2, he will start on the outside line into turn one but inside lien into turn 2 and if he gets his elbows out, Verstappen won't have anywhere to go and had to concede. Not too likely as the Honda engine is just all conquering over the Renault, but Verstappen isn't known to be a great starter.

The Haas' were super quick in the wet, Perez crashed out in Q2. Together with Russell's gamble that didn't play out, that's why you see the 'scrambled' grid.

Hamilton critical of the junk Mercedes car, that's a mark of someone that already had everything and not afraid to speak out. he can freely speak his mind. One will never see Verstappen criticizing his Red Bull car no matter what, he still needed the pay check, he still need to kiss Horner and Marko's bottom.

Thanks Nick! very interesting, didn't know Alonso still had it in him, that start is going to be a banger then, I hope there are no crashes though.

Had a search for the on-board qualifying lap and found this, crazy how they drive on the wet, Alonso's reaction to his time is funny

IMO rather it's a strategy in conjunct with the team in order to get things like this, and notice they must of had the parts already ready before FIA suddenly announced the changes which was very "convenient" if you know what I mean.

unless you don’t use cobalt at all.  How many others are going this direction?  Hmmm

That alleged progress is China and its atrocious record on human rights. You have also conveniently neglected that cobalt is still used in Tesla’s high performance models including those shiny Plaid variants.

Toto says he is genuinely concerned about the drivers and gives morality lectures to the other team bosses.. meanwhile he is the one giving his driver's the biggest porpoising damage of all the teams over the option of raising ride height (a price to pay for their own fault for not reducing porpoising in developing as much as othee teams)... oh the hypocrisy.
