RC:

The main problem here are insurance rates. Young people here in Germany still love BMW but insurance rates have skyrocketed for models which are popular with younger people.

Take my son's BMW 320d xDrive (G20). His insurance rate is 1900 EUR per year. The insurance rate of my BMW Z4 M40i (G29) is 1800 EUR per year. Both cars can be driven by both kids.

I enquired the insurance rate for a BMW 330d or 340d or 330/340i and for the M240i xDrive. Basically double of the above insurance rates but even worse: My insurance wouldn't even provide insurance for my kids because these cars are too powerful for them. They refuse it.

Tried to put my son on my Trackhawk's insurance...it would have been bumped up to 3700 EUR a year (from now 1800). It would have worked though.

Bottom line is: I think many cars cannot be insured, this is why younger people drive certain models, even if these models aren't necessarily less powerful. Insurances here are evaluating accident figures and if a certain car gets in an accident in a certain age group too often...well... Smiley

Your sons rate is double what I pay for the turbo, the tesla and my wife’s Honda SUV.  Ouch. Curious what it would have cost for him in a base model3 in Germany.  I know he would hate it. Just curious.
Good news on the Labo!!  Sounds like time for a trade?  Don’t do it.
