It would seems McLaren turned down the initial offer from VAG and wanted double the price. VAG came back with a better deal and it was accepted.

Like all corporate mergers, deals are denied until all parties involved are ready to make the announcement.

BMW came up short again in their conquest of British brands. Losing to VAG again like they did with the old Rolls Royce/Bentley company.

Could they came out of it with the McLaren name instead like last time?
