Democrats are moving the US towards Europe, politically, economically and culturally. Germans/Europeans may call this a social democratic approach but while I agree, social democratic societies can easily make the jump to socialism if they aren't careful. It has never really happened in a Western country but this doesn't mean it cannot happen. Just let a bigger economic/financial crisis loom and people will be more willing to vote with extremist sides.

Republicans are (hopefully) still standing for the good old USA but I'm afraid Trump added a little bit of drama and a little bit of disappointment to the mix. I was always 99% behind all Republican presidents in the past since Ronald Reagan (this was the time I got interested in politics), I even liked G.W. Bush and I know how the media made him look, not only in Germany but Trump is a different story. A president needs to be more than only tough or proud and a president needs to be president even for those who didn't vote for him. Actually, the job of the president of the United States is in my opinion the toughest diplomatic job on this planet. I do not think that Trump is a diplomat though, even if I really think that he learned a lot of the past three years or so.
