992 platform is designed to be able to accommodate hybrid system.

They couldn't do it with the 991. 

Don't have much details, but my guess would be to have a small battery inside the front trunk, a inline motor sandwiched between the gearbox and engine. Sort of like the Panamera hybrid setup, so the electric motor output can take advantage of the PDK gearbox too. 

Another option for AWD models would be the front differential replaced by a electric motor driven separately, Porsche have plenty of expertise deploying such a system, they did it with the 918 and 919 already. 

There isn't much room inside a 911 to stash a battery. Size-wise the 918 battery isn't that big, and with technology advances it will probably be smaller still for the same capacity, but there still isn't much room to put it outside of the front trunk.
