Porsche's new paint shop is state of the art, but it is normally stock with stock sports car colours. PTS, or more accurately, colour-on-request, means changing the feed to the robots to a different tank of colours just for one car. Not very efficient. But for some commonly requested colours, they can do batch painting within the automated line.

With their own individual paint booths now, they can pull a body-in-white off the line and paint one car at a time and not disrupt their production line too much.

Suppose to be cheaper to do it in house than to farm that off to a 3rd party like before, but Porsche's labour cost for employees are higher than outside 3rd party, and with so many requests now, why not charge more?
