Here's a photo of the collapsible spare in trunk. Mounted like this there's still "lots" of room if you shove stuff around the spare and into the center of the wheel... .

If you get a flat you get this space back, but lose backseat room. You can also have your passenger cover him/herself with stuff to make up for space taken up by the flat in the back seat. IOW, unless the back seat area of your car is stuffed to the roof liner, the flat and the collapsible spare are comparable in total cubic inch volume they take up.



Definite PITA but don't forget you also have a shot at solving the problem wth a DIY plug (or can of goop).
