My 996 used to have an appreciable little "kick" in RPM and performance at around 3300 rpm which I attributed to the Variocam effect,

I don't notice this at all on my 997S.

Is it gone? Should I be noticing it?

Frankly, I've been so concerned with the break-in procedures and some minor oil consumption that I haven't noticed the Vario-cam kick in. The transition from 3,500 - 5000 rpm seems pretty smooth to me, although I notice better acceleration above 4,200 - 4,400 rpm. I'll pay closer attention and see if I can notice the Vario-cam "kick in."
