I believe to drive a "uncontrollable" beast like in the turbo area and even beyond was much more exhausting than today. In Monaco they had blisters on their hands from the 2000 manual gearchanges they had to do in one race.....- plus there was no "motormanagement" that smoothes the torque curve or "perfect" balance like we have today. For me true heros were those in the past - not even touching the subject of safety.....- certainly the driver made the difference.

I wish today there would be a manual shifting with incredible horsepower and no drivers aid's whatsoever - a machine that can only be handled by a few people on the limit - and for which the sponsors happily can pay 20 Mio a year - but I am currently not happy with the drivers involvement vs the car's capability.
