    Cayene Long Term Reliability

I bought my 2005 Cayenne S almost a year back. It has 12,000kms (about 8,000 miles). In the UAE, Porsche only offers a 2-year warranty, so its under warranty only for 1 more year.

I am happy with it so far, although there are some annoying problems e.g. noise after starting the car, sounds like the suspension height adjustment compressor, rattling noise behind rear seat, occassional vibrating noise from dash).

I especially would be interested to hear about cayennes with at least 40,000 miles or at least 2-year old vehicle & the reliability experience. For instance, if I keep it for another 3 years (2 of which will be out of warranty) and drive up to 50,000 miles, what kind of break downs can I expect?

Is it even advisable to keep the car our of warranty? I know I can buy a warranty extenion every year for $1,300 per year but that warranty would have some exclusions, so Im not too keen to go for that.

    Thanks

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

I've driven 8000km's on my 05 August, MY06 Cayenne Turbo. Not a single thing wrong with it. Running as good as day day of delivery.

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

My Cayenne Turbo Powerkit is almost two years old and I'm definetely getting the warranty extension. The most expensive parts are covered, so I can highly recommend it. Just make sure that the car is in perfect shape, the dealer has to do some sort of "checkup" anyway before he can sell you the extended warranty.

Regarding reliability, well, I'm satisfied. My car has now over 32000 km and I've driven it hard all the time. No off-roading though but some tough snow driving.
No real problems so far but something may have come up: for a couple of weeks now, I have a very harsh shifting from gear 3 to gear 4 when I fully accelerate. It happens only when the gearbox is hot (after some driving) and when shifting from 3rd gear into 4th gear, I get a "kick" in the back, it is a very strong feel and it definetely comes from the auto tranny. My dealer already checked the black box with the PiWiS but there was nothing wrong. Data has been sent to Porsche, they couldn't find anything wrong either.
The dealer did a reset of the black box but it didn't help at all. Since my warranty is running out end of March, I'm a little bit worried. But since Porsche is already aware of the problem, I hope they find a solution soon. Unfortunately I get the feeling that the only solution would be to exchange the Tiptronic. Dealers are still not authorized to open them up and do repairs.

So I keep my fingers crossed, so far my Cayenne Turbo has been very reliable, it never let me down and I've been to Italy, France, Austria, etc. with it, no problems.

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

Sounds to me like being an excessive wear of the 3rd to 4th synchronisation clutch(or whatever part doing this job on an automatic gearbox, hey im'not a mechanic ), which means that your gearbox could stop working properly soon if still being driven very hard.

I guess the 70 bhp added to the engine and your driving (hammering) style don't help the gearbox reliability.

Imho that sounds like a very big future problem, so you should ask for an all new gearbox before your warranty ends.

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

I have 40,000 miles on my S and for the most part it is been reliable. You will continue to have nagging problems e.g. throttle hesistation while making turns which Porsche denies (like the RMS problem with the 996/997).

Of course, expect maintenance issues like brake replacement and oil change as the car gets older. Bottom line it is over all a good reliable SUV albeit over priced and frankly, a waste. I could have bought a much cheaper SUV and it will have provided me with all I need for a SUV. I do not race SUV's.

Porsche has already approved a fix. If it doesn't work, I suppose the whole gearbox has to be exchanged.
The warranty is no problem since I told them about the problem within the warranty period. And I also get the warranty extension since I plan to keep our Cayenne for another two to three years.

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

The whole gearbox package (box+software) seems to be the only weak point of that car.

For my own technical culture : Did they explain you exactly which part should be replaced/repaired in the gearbox?

Maybe you should have bought a turbo, can't compare driving to any SUV out there.

They have to open up the gearbox on the undercarriage side (no need to take the Tiptronic out) and exchange a part called "Schaltstange" as far as I remember.
I'll ask for details when the job will actually be done after we return from our vacation. Maybe I can take a picture of the new and old parts. But I'm not too optimistic. Today I drove a couple of hundreds of km in the Cayenne and the "kick" from the gearbox got even stronger.

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

i have a cayenne s with over 7k kilometers on it. so far not a single problem/ glitch.

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

I put 15,000 miles on a 2004 Cayenne Turbo before my patience ran out...

When it worked, I absolutely loved it. It was an awesome vehicle for the diverse terrain and roads of Alaska. I have never owned a car that got so many looks and generated so much interest than my CTT.

The problem was that it spent more time in the dealer's shop than in my garage. I have a binder full of service slips, many were repeat issues that were never resolved. Most of these items were weird electronic/computer items that could have easily been swapped out for new parts, but parts availbility was always a problem. Fortunately, the engine was very sound (the only CTT sold here that did not have oil leakage problems, i'm told by the dealer).

This is not intended as a negative rant about the Cayenne. Like I said, I loved it. But my expectations for reliability and downtime were sadly not met. For that amount of money, I expected more/better. Maybe I just got one of those rare lemon-flavored Porsches?

I understand that the newer 05 and 06 models are much more robust and am happy that those owners are not experiencing the troubles that I did. That being said, I look forward to the facelifted model next year and will consider another CTT at that time. We'll see...

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

I have had two CSs and put 35000 miles on each one with minimal problems. Both had the comfort computer module replaced and no other problems. I loved them and they drove like new despite my hard driving style and Mississippi roads. I was most impressed with the fact that neither of them had a single rattle.

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

My cayenne is 2 years old now and it have 28000km.
i found some noise problem from the CD player when insert/eject it sound like something was jam inside Gaggaggaggggg!!!
And the porsche service can't even fixed it.i went to see them 3time and it disappeare for 2-3 days and start to gaggag again

Anybody has some suggustion fpr me pls.

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

My 2004 Cayenne S is at about 60k miles and has been relatively problem free. It still uses no oil; I can't even tell that the mark on the dipstick moves at all from one oil change to the next (I change at 10k miles). I've changed pads and rotors once. No other major maintenance.

My x-wife's 2002 BMW X-5, on the other hand, has been a maintenance nightmare. She has recurring electronic gremlins, like the dying battery. The battery will inexplicable go dead. This has happened repeatedly over the life of the car. Another deal is the rear window raise/lower mechanism keeps breaking, at least twice on each rear window. She was complaining to me recently about her X-5 problems and wanted to know my advice. I told her to buy a new X-5!

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

I'm having the same problem with my Cayenne S CD (PCM version). As soon as I open the door or put the key in the player begins to make a rattling sound (if there is a CD loaded) and won't stop until I eject the disk. I asked the dealer about it last time I was in and got a confused look. Anyone have this happen and actually get a fix?

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

Had the exact same problem, dealer put a new PCM in under warranty, fixed...

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

I seem to be snakebit with cars and electric gremlins lately. I just took the Mercedes in today because it has developed a mind of its own (or had a stroke) electronically. Everything from Xenons not working to audio turning itself on/off on its own to climate control doing the same but never all at the same time. Car is only 18 months old, which is a shame.

So i have to ask my dealer to change PCM for me under the warranty
    thank you for answers.

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

    SciFrog -

When your dealer replaced your PCM do you recall if there was any Service Bulletins out for the problem? I'm trying to get the Cayenne into the dealer next week to have them try to get this corrected.

    Thanks.

    Carl

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

I don't know, insist on the dealer to make the noise happen, as it is an intermittent problem.

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

Little update: the little repair removed the "kick" from shifting, no problem anymore. Happy owner again...

How did they fix it RC? Incase this should ever happen to me in the future.

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

at 35k miles, despite some initial problems that had me worried, my cayenne currently is beating every other new car i have owned, including two toyota trucks (t100 and tundra), two hondas, and a mazda miata.

it is so far ahead of the audi A6 i had (that went back to audi under the lemon law), that you can't even see from here to there. this could well be a 200k keeper.

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

My 2 year warranty will expire in 2 months. I have decided to gamble and not extend it. It seems like a safe bet. I've had no problems whatsoever and it's the best car/truck I have ever owened. Will probably keep it for another 2-3 years.

    Re: Cayene Long Term Reliability

With MY2007 out in a few months, the 2003's will be about 4 years old (with 4-year warranties that are offered in the US expiring or about to expire). I would be keen to hear from people in the US, Europe or here in the Middle East or elsewhere who's warranties have expired. My 2-year warranty expires next year & it costs about $1,500 to get 1-year extension. I'm not sure what to do. I've had a few small problems but never had anything fixed under warranty (dealer says everything's just fine). So not only do I have a shorter warranty but a dealer not very keen to do repairs (which is strange as they do get paid for doing warranty jobs).
