    Panamera in Winter

I've ordered a Panamera Turbo with 20" wheels that should arrive while the snow is still flying here in Ohio.  I need something other than the summer tires that come with the car so I will be able to drive it..

My first choice would have been an all season tire that didn't require a second set of wheels to be switched between.  A thorough search reveals no such tire to be available.

My second choice would have been a second set of 20" wheels with Nokian WRG2.  They, unfortunatley, don't come in the right sizes.

The choice that Porsche has developed is a second set of 20" wheels with some newly developed N0 versions of Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozero Serie II.

Does anyone know what to expect from these tires?

The www.tirerack.com description sounds very promising, perhaps ideal for Ohio winters:

The Winter 240 Sottozero Serie II (Series 2) is Pirelli's V-speed rated Performance Winter tire developed for the drivers of premium, high performance vehicles facing challenging wintertime road conditions as they drive their cars year round. The Winter 240 Sottozero Serie II was developed with the philosophy that winter tires must perform in a variety of unpredictable weather conditions and aren't just for use in the snowbelt states. Winter 240 Sottozero Serie II tires are designed not just as snow tires, but as seasonal tires suitable for the weather and road conditions typically experienced in parts of the U.S. between November and April by providing traction and handling in dry, wet, cold and wintry conditions.

Great news and congratulations on your car!  Can't help with the tires, but would love to know what color/combo you finally ordered.  Thanks for your posts...

    Re: Panamera in Winter

    Congrats Mike!

I was driving the Winter 240 Sottozero before. I liked it, was more a street and Autobahn tire as the one you would take if you go every week to the off-track skiing region. But for a Panamera they should work great!

get smaller wheels for the winter - theyare for function not just looks during those months - here are the 18's

    Re: Panamera in Winter

I had the Nokian on my car for the past 3 winters. Fabulous grip on snow , but quite noisy.

Now I have the sottozero. I like them better as they are much smoother and more silent. I have been driving on snow and they worked great, even with slightly less traction then the Nokian.

    Any experiences with Michelin Alpin?¿

    Re: Panamera in Winter

Mike, the Sottozero is an excellent winter tire for the Panamera, you can't go wrong with it. This tire has won various V-rated tire reviews.

Go with the N rated version of the Sottozero, like Porsche is recommending it, it has been adapted to the Panamera's 4WD and the weight distribution of this car. Excellent tire choice.

DO NOT choose All-Season tires on the Panamera Turbo, they're not good enough on snow and they're horrible during summers when you want to go a bit faster.

DO NOT choose the Nokian, it is an excellent snow tire but as soon as it gets dry, the driving capabilities of this tire are not very good, especially in high speed turns (very nervous, safety limit is very narrow).

He can't use 18'' wheels on his Panamera Turbo, especially not with PCCB.

For the last time, there is no such thing as an all season tireSmiley

They're useless in summer and useless in winter.

Send a PM to Alexgil, he has the Pirellis on his Turbo, and he knows how to use'em:

    Re: Panamera in Winter

I ended up ordering a second set of 20" RS-Spyder wheels sized a little differently for (and fitted with) the Sottozeros.  The rear wheels sold by Porsche in their sets with winter tires mounted are 1/2" narrower to accommodate 285 wide winter tires instead of the 295 wide summer rubber.

RC - i didn't say he should get 18's - just showed the picture and reminded  that for winter tires function is really paramount so smaller is better.

anyway - they use 19's here on Turbo's  - not sure if that works on the PCCB but if it does than they would beat the 20's.

It's my impression that narrower tires are better than wider tires for driving and stopping traction in snow.  Since the section width is about the same for the 18", 19" and 20" wheels, I don't expect much difference in snow driving among the different choices.

If one is only talking about sidewall profile, I'd love to hear more about the scientific basis for higher profile tires of the same width being better in the snow.

    Re: Panamera in Winter

Have set of Michelin Pilot Alpin snow tires on Panamera 4S.  Much better snow tires than the Pirelli's.

In a recent 4 inch snow storm, they performed as well as a Range Rover with the same Michelin snow tires.  Quite amazing.  Don't know about deeper snow of 8" and above, but soon will.

    Re: Panamera in Winter

do you have the air suspension? gets you up to almost 7 inches i think
