    Hard ride / Carrera non-S with 19s

Anybody know how to soften the ride of a regular Carrera 997 with 19s. I do not have PASM. On rough roads my ride is too hard for my comfort level. Anybody recommend softer or adjustable shocks? Or just go back to stock 18s? How is the ride with stock 18s?

chipper on buying the 18's which will make it softer why not ask for a demo in a base 997 to confirm this..

Re: Hard ride / Carrera non-S with 19s

I agree, try the 18's out.

You can also try running the car with slightly lower than recommended tire pressure (like 4 psi less for instance), which I do when I drive my parents around to give them a softer ride. It makes a big difference.

One caution though - I have 18's on my 996. Lower tire pressure might be hazardous to your 19 inch rims if you encounter bad bumps or potholes.

Finally - drive slow on the bad roads. It's obvious - I know.

Re: Hard ride / Carrera non-S with 19s

I have a C2 on the stock wheels and the ride is pretty comfortable for a sports car. I test drove a C2S riding on 19" and it felt a lot firmer.

Re: Hard ride / Carrera non-S with 19s

I can only add (not having mine yet) that when I asked the saleman about optional 19" wheels on my Carrera 4 he said it would ride quite a bit harsher.

Re: Hard ride / Carrera non-S with 19s

Are you sure your tires are not over-inflated? I had an issue with that and my tires were overinflated by the dealer. I have no problem with my car on most roads. Most freeways here in LA are made of concrete and two small sections are a little rough. Other than that, the ride is smooth.

Re: Hard ride / Carrera non-S with 19s

I've lowered the tire pressure to the lowest the manual says I can for a light load in the car. Something like 34 psi in front and 40 psi in back. Dare I go lower than that?

Yes, the dealer had the tires inflated to the higher levels and above. The ride was terrible! I let some air out.

Opinion: Porsche should recommed to those who order the reg. Carrera with 19s that they also order PASM. The "S" with PASM apparently has a softer ride in normal mode than does the reg. Carrera. The softer ride may be necessary for comfort when one drives on rough roads. We have a lot of those on O'ahu.

Re: Hard ride / Carrera non-S with 19s

18"s will work best for a softer ride

Re: Hard ride / Carrera non-S with 19s

I fully agree about "normal" suspension mode with PASM being softer and more comfy than the standard suspension set up. I was actually VERY impressed with PASM. In normal mode, it's more comfy, and in Sport, it's a completely different animal, and, at least on the N'ring - almost as good as the sport suspension (-20mm). Truly the best of both worlds. Definitely a great option in the standard 997.

Re: Hard ride / Carrera non-S with 19s

Would you be interested to exchange your 19" wheels with my 18" ones ? Indeed, I am looking for 19" wheels at the moment.

I have a 996 cab with 18" and regularly run 32psi in the front and 34 to 36psi in the rears (Michelin). You can go lower than the 40psi that Porsche says. The last set of Pilot Sports I had, I got 33,000 miles out of the rear and the ride is as comfortable as it gets for me for a 911. By way of comparison, the 996 rides smoother than my Mini Cooper S.

Re: Hard ride / Carrera non-S with 19s

What is wrong with a hard ride? I do not think your car would be considered harsh would it? I would not under-inflate the tires at all.I have not driven the 997S for fear I would want one, so I settled for the 997C2. I don't know if the different whwll patterns have any effect? Wpuld the shocks be more effective in the ride comfort?

Re: Hard ride / Carrera non-S with 19s

I might be interested in an exchange plus cash back. The 19s are a $1900 option over and above the 18s. But if you are in Switzerland and I am in Hawaii, shipping would be murder. Also my tires and wheels are essentially brand new. I just recently took delivery on a 2006 model. But thanks for the idea. How many miles on your tires?

Re: Hard ride / Carrera non-S with 19s

Yes----knock another 4 lbs off those values. You would need to hit an absolutely horrendous bump to do any sidewall damage. And a caring Porsche driver should be watching the road very carefully--- for nails/road debris etc. I have always driven my NSX and the Carrera 997 with those lower pressures to improve the ride (not many smooth roads here)--- and that includes some really fast driving at 160+kph, You can always go back to standard if you have a track-day. get a set of 18in if you can!
