    997 GTS vs Cayman S

My Cayman S has just gone in for its 1st service and the OPC very kindly gave me a 997 GTS coupe with -20mm SPASM and PDK for 3 days. Having now lived with it for a very short while I thought I'd share my thoughts. First and foremost the GTS is brillaint. Quick, good to drive, sounds and looks geat - what's not to like. -20mm SPASM is just fantastic. I chose a new Cayman S over a used 997.1S because I preferred the steering and handling. But the steering on this SPASM car was just brilliant - the best I've tried since the 997/987 generation came out (admittedly I've not tried a GT3 yet). On a par with the 996/986 if you ask me and until now I would always have jumped at the chance of the steering feel of the older cars. The ride is pretty firm but not as bad as my Cayman S with PASM in Sport Mode, yet the body roll is non existant compared to the Cayman S in Sport Mode. I could happily live with the ride although most passengers were less complimentary. The steering is surprisingly heavy - a small price to pay in my book. As to handling, its very much as I've said before. The Cayman is easier and more incisive to turn in (the 997 felt a bit as if I was wrestling it at first - probably due to my driving style as I've had mid engined carers for over 15 years) but the 997 is much more composed and grippy accelerating out (even though my Cayman S has the LSD). Horses for courses and both are brilliant. Which brings me to the PDK. The GTS had sport chrono but a mutlifunction wheel and puddles not paddles. Horrid! The interface is terrible and the gearbox was always trying to do the opposite of what I wanted. Its manual and short shift for me. So where do I go now? I'll probably change cars in 2-3 years and my choice will depend on whether the new Cayman S has decent steering (electric doesn't fill me with hope but I'll reserve judgement) and whether there is a SPASM type option. Otherise a used GTS with -20mm SPASM will be gracing my drive.

Sorry about the formatting of my description - Rennteam is behaving strangely at the moment.  Anyway, here's a quick photo I took on my phone at dusk last night

Thanks for the comparison, it's music to my ears and confirms a lot of my own impressions. I traded in a Cayman S on a 997.1 C2S two years ago and just recently traded in the C2S for a new GTS (Sept build, Nov delivery). I ordered a manual, with -20mm SPASM and Sport Chrono, so it sounds like we're on the same wavelength.

    Roll on November!

Re: 997 GTS vs Cayman S

I agree, the GTS is a very nice choice but I would testdrive the new 991 Carrera S before making a decision.

From a value for the money point of view, the GTS is (or was) almost unbeatable.

    Glad you enjoyed the GTS..kiss

Just two points - I've had mine for 8 months now and PASM with LSD is fine for me... in sport mode it compares well to SPASM.  Also, in normal mode there are no complaints from passengers..

Paddles are a must with PDK - an entirely different driving experience!  I thought they were standard on the GTS?

Your observation is very accurate. Being a Carrera S owner and a Boxster part-user I can say the M-E car is easier to enter into a corner and more natural but the 911 shines on the way out of the curve (as long as you keep committed).

I find that at lower speeds, around 100-130km/h, the Boxster is the easier and more pleasant car but above that the 911 is far more composed. The 911 steering is also more communicative.
