    RMS on a 997S - another one for the total count

    Had the 997S in for Porsche recall work the past 2 days and whilst at the workshop the mechanic pointed out that the RMS issue was there, although it hadnt actually started leaking oil yet. All replaced under warranty but annoying nonetheless that Porsche are still suffering with this issue on the 997.

    On a positive note, been driving around in a loaner Cayenne base model the past few days (wow, totally gutless) and to have the 997S back is bloody brilliant.

    and how many miles? and what would've they charged you if it had been out of warranty. thanks for the info and disappointing to hear.

    Huh? I hope he means it is leaking but hasn't made it to your garage floor yet. It's a matter of chance that the oil drip shows up on your floor when the leak is slight and newly formed. E.g. the bigger the leak (or the longer the time) the greater chance that it will show up on your garage. Speaking from experience my 986S leak took a few months to _consistently_ drip to the floor.

    Please explain how the mechanic explained how a rear main seal needs replacement before it actually leaks.

    14,500 miles on the car. It was a November/December 2004 build which arrived in the US first week of Jan 2005 when I took delivery (west coast).

    Mechanic said that the leak wasnt enough to make it to the garage floor but there was oil around the seal and it was definately RMS change time (as opposed to waiting for oil to show up on the floor in a few months and then book the car in). He also said that in his experience this is pretty rare on the 997, but that the 996 had way too many instances and on that model he was working on around one a week.

    Im afraid that I dont know how much it would have cost out of warranty but Id guess it isnt cheap as there is quite a bit of labor getting the job done.

    again, sorry to hear. thanks for the info. let's HOPE that the mechanic hasn't seen that many on the 997 because they have re-engineered/re-designed/modified the RMS (have they??) opposed to its still too early for them to start appearing and in a few years from now (when people have logged more miles) that mechanic will be working on one a week of the 997s too.

    (weren't they issues that with some exceptions took several years and tens of thousands of miles before they became more common on the 996??).

    The seal and it's installation have been improved in the 997s but the basic issue which produces the leaks (split crankcase in which seal's seat isn't machined) is still there.

    It doesn't take alot of miles for leaks to start up in a new engine either.

    Does anyone know of a website that tells what vin numbers have recalls? and what the recalls are for?

    Funny thing but I too have developed an RMS problem on my 05 997S cab. Noticed a little oil on the garage floor but had to take it in for its 2 year work anyway. Dealer called back and surprise! surprise! RMS! Considering that I only have 11k on the car it seems a bit premature. Dealer put me up in a Chevy Malibu so I turned it back in and will drive the new DB9 instead. Should freak them out when I drive up in the "beast" whenI come for the cab! Later this week I'll publish pictures of the new AM with it's Pcar stablemate.

    There's definitely a correlation between late 04 / early 05 builds and having RMS problems. My car falls into both categories .

    I just cannot believe that this problem which is known from the original 2.5L 986 boxster back 10 years ago has not been DEFINITELY fixed. I of course took the extended warranty on my 05 997S, but it would freak me out to see oil on my garage floor. This is simply crazy. Much debated issue, but I hope this was a "9X6" issue only....

    I'm interested to see if any 987 or 997 cars develop an RMS-type oil leak AFTER PAG started using the revised RMS (based on the Cayenne)...

    Here's the problem (as much as my amateur mind can recall).

    Crankcase is split and this means it is cast in two pieces.

    The RMS is seated in a cavity created when the two halves are bolted together.

    That cavity SHOULD be MACHINED to be perfectly concentric with the crankshaft to extreme level of precision.

    It is TOO COSTLY to machine each crankcase half into a "mated pair."

    Porsche relies on the casting to be accurate enough.

    BTW, racing engines _are_ precisely machined.

    So, after some reasonable quality control, it's a hit or miss on which will fail and which will hold up. It is easier for Porsche to fix the ones that fail.

    As you can see from the picture I posted above the RMS is a HUGE diameter. This compounds the problem of keeping oil from leaking out since the large rotating diameter (journal) means the speed and energy of the oil is muuuuch greater and therefore harder to contain than a smaller oil seal journal.

    What's nice is once fixed they tend not to leak again. If the thing requires three fixes, Porsche replaces the whole engine.

    Addendum: The Tysons Corner VA dealer kept my 997S cab for three days to replace the RMS with what was reported to be a new design seal. I am obviously worried that it will leak again, but they seem to think that Porsche's new fix works. Interestingly enough, the tech observed that the problem appears to be more often in cars that "sit alot". (like mine). Apparently the seal likes to be kept lubricated (like most of us). Now we see.

    Interesting - the mechanic who worked on my car said the same thing; that Porsche have a new seal which is supposed to be much better. Time will tell.
