2014 Spanish F1 Grand Prix in Barcelona

F1 returns to Europe ... I expect every team to have significant upgrades ... I still expect Mercedes to be comfortably out in front ... with Red Bull, Ferrari and perhaps Force India in the next group ... Williams seems to be under-delivering right now I expected them to be getting better results ... McLaren has been slipping backwards drastically ...

I think RBR will do better now in the European stint of the championship, and will close the gap to Mercedes progresively. Alonso plays in home turf this GP and will be very motivated but I don't think Ferrari will be able to improve the car much given thier history, they will be lucky to be ahead of the Force Indias and Williams.

I tip Nico to take the 5th Mercedes win. But certainly others like RBR and Ferrari are working hard on their updates to try to close this gap to Mercedes which is quite significant. Only problem is, it may be a very basic chassis and engine related trick (such as the rumored split turbos) which they could not really compensate mid season. Only aero aspects can yield quick improvements.

Will be interesting to see how Rosberg and Vettel will handle the pressure from their teammates for this race. Boullier said that Mclaren found a lot of improvements which should make them "second power" - whatever that means.... - but I still believe that Mercedes is only displaying as much as they need to win. Bottomline is that unless Renault improves their package dramatically - it will be Mercedes engines all the way...

Hamilton is superior to Rosberg. There is no doubt. Hamilton is one of the three star drivers currently in F1.

Vettel has not adjusted yet and this makes Ricciardo look better than he is. Nevertheless, he only won two P4 so why all the hype?

Another problem with Vettel is that after four in a row the man is subconsciously not very hungry, at this stage at least.

If there is one team to really challenge Mercedes AMG this is RBR because of Newey. Others, like Ferrari and McLaren might improve but I don't think they could catch up in time.

Of course, in motorsport nothing is certain and a foregone conclusion and many unpleasant things could happen to the favourites that might change the course of this championship.

as far as I understand you cannot beat the Mercedes package this year as they found a way to split the Turbo in 2 pieces and that they need less radiator size because of it in the "wind" hence have a substantial benefit aerodynamically - not even talking about the HP advantage against Renault and Ferrari

Mercedes have separated the turbo compressor from the turbine and in doing so have reduced turbo lag and gained aero advantages. More air is allowed to pass without pipework obstruction but also less heat is generated, thus smaller intercoolers and smaller sidepods. All these aiding aerodynamics.

Rival teams cannot copy because engine design has been locked and customer teams received their engines later and couldn't incorporate this feature in the car design.

Rivals might come up with other ideas to partly counter but their main hope is for Mercedes AMG to be hit by unreliabilty, driver errors, accidents and all the unpredictables of F1.

This breakthrough on behalf of Mercedes is hailed as a genious concept and a very difficult application to implement.
