    car dead

Drove car (997s) last night with no issues. Just went out to start it and no power. Horn, lights nothing works. Airbag warning icon is on and will not go off. Anyone have any idea what the problem is? Also a cd was mysteriously ejected from the player.

    Re: car dead

No clue but possibly dead battery is the culprit??

    Re: car dead

Low battery. Exact same symptoms when mine battery got drianed!

    Re: car dead

Give it a boost and see if that fixes it. If it starts, take it for a good long drive on the hwy (2 hrs) and see if it'll hold the charge.

My battery died (1 year old 996) and did not hold charge. All I got was hassle from my dealership - they and Porsche did not cover me for the CDN $285 that the new one cost me. Basically, the issue was that a battery is like a clutch - failure is blamed on poor maintenance/use rather than a defect per se.

How the hell do you prove that a battery is defective?

    Re: car dead

By any chance did you leave the key in the ignition? Not sure but I think that can drain the battery, even if the key is in the off position (i.e. ready to be pulled out)

    Re: car dead

Yes, I did leave the key in the ignition but it was in the off position. I will jump it off in the morning and hope for the best. Was not aware the key in the ignition would drain the battery. I appreciate the help form all who posted.

I betcha that did it. I heard this somewhere and don't remember the circumstances. I do remember being impressed by the thought nothing is obvious anymore with these cars. I mean before you could assume an innocent thing like leaving the key there wouldn't do any harm! I'm hoping that's your problem and everything 997 will go back to normal for you!

    Re: car dead

yep has gotta be the key! just charge the battery overnight and drive it around a lot tomorrow and it should be fine!

    Re: car dead

Once I left the key in the ignition and the same thing happened

    Re: car dead

Yea, don't leave the key in the ignition, that's how I drained my battery. Also if you're jumping, make sure to press the alarm button on your key because the car will think you're trying to steal it!

    Re: car dead

Here is what the owner's manual has to say:

"To avoid battery run-down, always remove the
ignition key from the ignition lock."

Easy to miss this. Not written like a major warning.

LOL! Yeah, the manual, ha! There should be a top ten list of "major warnings" at the front of the manual.

Number 1 should be: no spare tire, do not drive car without cell phone coverage.

Number 2: do not wash hood of car except when car is at or near a certified Porsche service center.

    Number 3: [oops! gotta run...]

    Re: car dead

Does leaving the keys in the ignition not upset your insurance company if the car gets stolen??? Seems like a pretty precarious thing to do in my book.

    Re: car dead

I did it while my car was locked in my garage. I'm pretty sure it was safe. I don't think anyone here is leaving the key in while out in public.

    Re: car dead

Next time, just leave the engine running.

Ahem. I HAD assumed it was in your garage.

A lot of cars tend to get taken by thieves stealing car keys from the house (possibly while the owners are IN the house). By leaving the car unlocked with the keys in the ignition, you're just giving them a head start.

My query though was what your insurance company thought about the practice. Many in the UK would not pay up if the car is stolen when it was left with the keys in the ignition, regardless of whether it was in a garage or not.

There's no such limitation in an auto insurance policy here in the colonies.

I tried that but it kept running out of gas after a couple of days, then the battery drained.
