    Quick TC - PSM question

    Dear All,

I have a small question for the 996 experts amongst you.

Recently, I came across a 996 carrera 2 (MY 2003, build somewhere towards the end of 2002), but already with the 320 hp engine.

There were no switches in the middle console for 'TC' or 'PSM'. Does this mean that no TC is present or that all these cars were standard delivered with TC but that there is simply no switch to turn it offSmiley

    Thank you for the replies!

Re: Quick TC - PSM question

ALL 996-320HP had PSM standard, the switch should be the top one of the three switches to the left of the PCM, and should have a light indicator that lights up when you disconect the PSM.

There was no TC (traction control) offered for that version. TC was only offered in the 98-99 Carrera 2 as an option (along with rear LSD option), after that PSM became standard and those two options dissapeared.

Re: Quick TC - PSM question

    Hi Carlos,

Thank you for the quick reply. Maybe it is a country specific thing?

I talked with the sales person (it is an official Porsche dealership) and she informed me that the car has no PSM (which I can believe as there really is no switch), but has TC nonetheless. There is however not a switch for it, and as you pointed out, pre-facelift cars had a switch 'TC' (if the option was selected).

Therefore, I am wondering if she is just trying to sell the car or if it has TC. On such a car, PSM seems preferable, but no TC would definitely be a no-go.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated!

Re: Quick TC - PSM question

    I've checked a 996.2 brochure I kept.

PSM was standard equipment on 4WD cars. For 2WD it was optional extra,so this car doesn't have it. PSM became standard equipment on 2WD models with the introduction of 997.

Moreoever, as TC was not available on its own at the time but incorporated in the PSM, it means that this car has no TC either.

Re: Quick TC - PSM question

On 4WD version the PSM was standard since the very begining, there is no 4WD 996 without PSM, but I was under the impresion that it became standard on the 2WD Carrera in 2000.  But perhaps I'm mistaken on that last part. I know for a fact that 98-99 996 models had the TC as optional (along with optional LSD, as long as you didn't get PSM because they were incompatible at the time), that is why I thought that after that they all had PSM standard since 2000, since there wasno more TC option like reginos says.

If that is the case and there is no PSM, and you still wnat to make sure it doesn't have TC, what I would do is check the option list sticker of that car which has the three digit codes of all the options fitted in that car, in the 996 it was usaully in a white sticker under the trunk´s hood, but here should be another sticker in the first pages of the maintenence book. For example if the car had the -10mm sport suspension then one of the codes printed in the sticker should be M30, sport exhaust is XLF, etc I don't know what the option code for the TC was but should be too difficult to find out. If you see the sticker and you don't see the TC's code amongst the rest of the codes then you know it doesn't have it. Otherwise the other solution is to ask to take if for a spin, and do a launch on a wet road and see if the rear wheels spin freely of if TC kicks in.

Personally if it doesn't have PSM I would pass on the car, there are plenty of 996.2 to choose from without having miss on the PSM, a very, very important safety feature for a street car nowadays, and TC is not a good enough substitute either.

Re: Quick TC - PSM question

Definitely PSM was an optional extra on 2WD until 997 but standard on the 996 Carrera 4, 4S and Turbo models.

The easiest way to find out if a 986/996 Porsche has either PSM or TC (earlier cars) is to see if there is switch on the centre console with either PSM OFF or TC OFF labels, as both systems could be switched off.

Like this for TC and similar for PSM OFF

Thank you all for your comments!

I must say, I have been reading Rennteam for quite some time now (albeit with not that many posts) and it is/was an enjoyable experience.

The feedback I received was really useful and made me decide to leave the car for what it is, better luck next time I suppose.

Nonetheless, if I am honest, I did not expect this feedback as the 996 is not the most recent car anymore... But your posts confirm to me that you really are an enjoyable car nut forum Smiley Smiley

With no more specific car in mind, I can go back doubting between 996 or Cayman S Smiley

Re: Quick TC - PSM question

Good morning from a very cold eastern Pennsylvania country setting. My wife and I recently sold our wonderful 2000 Boxster in order to move up to a 911. We picked up our 2002 911 C2 Cab two days ago (Tom Holt Motorsports in West  Chester ,PA) just hours before the latest snow and road salt fall. It is safely tucked into the barn until the roads clear. Like our Boxster  this 911 will be a garage queen for three Winter months and not be a DD in season. Will post pics soon. Meanwhile, I am enjoying the posts and learning more about 911.

Re: Quick TC - PSM question

    Congrats!

    Personally, I wouldn't buy a 996 anymore. I would buy a 993 but even more, a 997.

If I would have to choose between a 996 Carrera 2 or a new Cayman S, no doubt I would choose the Cayman S. Without thinking a second.

    Ha, my predicament exactly Smiley

Not trying to hijack the thread but decided to sell the 996 to get something a bit more "involving" and fun, not a DD. Been looking at the 993 but for the price of a nice, low mileage wide body, I can get an also nice 997 C2S, a totally different car Smiley

Since I can't yet afford to go where I want to end up, a 997 GT3, maybe the better "interim" (unless I decide to stay there) choice would be a 993 due to lower potential depreciation. I just can't get it into my thick skull to pay that kind of money for a 12 - 15 year old car Smiley

Got to say that I got a boost from Eric, in Paris (?), who just traded a Cayenne S + 5,000 Euros for a 964 Smiley

RC, my wife and I have done some thinking and it seems that we will wait a bit longer (Smiley) and go for a 997 as you suggested.

Obviously, this is the plan... In practice, sometimes, the waiting is driving me nuts, this giving me the feeling that every Porsche might be a good solution... Smiley
