Re: new - Ferrari 599 GTO

    trip:

I'm not so sure about that MKSGR, the car only weighs 1485 kg and is a front/mid engine layout, what is stopping it from great track performance? It will likely be faster than the Murcielago SV and other cars in that range.

Please keep in mind that this Italian dry weight will translate into some 1700kg based on EU standards... Handling wise the 599 is much too heavy on the front axle (not very agile in tighter bends, also showing quite a bit of understeer in faster corners). I just doubt that it could be possible to eliminate these major issues by a GTO update Smiley The design and sound of the car is great, thought Smiley

     @ MKSGR:

Since you own/owned a 599...based on your recent posts I get the feeling that this must have been a rather disappointing experience. Care to elaborate?

I always had a week spot for Ferrari's big GTs and thought that the 599 was a masterpiece- at least that was the gist when it came out a couple of years ago.

Nowadays you can actually buy them used for Turbo money...

Ferrari 599 GTO (2010) more scoop photos

    By Tim Pollard

    05 March 2010 15:45

It’s only a couple of weeks since we first scooped the new Ferrari 599-based GTO – and now our spies have snared this blood red example on the roads around Maranello’s factory gates. It’ll be the first official Ferrari GTO sold since the 1980s 288 GTO.

Standing for Gran Turismo Omologato, the 599-spec GTO will produce some 700bhp from the regular car’s Enzo-derived 6.0-litre V12. Although none of the spec is confirmed yet, early brochures have spilled some of the technical detail and we understand that the GTO will rev to a neck-tingling 9000rpm.

The regular 599 develops 611bhp and 448lb ft, and the GTO version is tipped to top 500lb ft of twist. Make no mistake, this 599 will be as fast and furious as the Scuderia spec 430.

Ferrari’s new GTO: a lightweight diet

The GTO will pack a load of carbonfibre – the roof on this scarlet test car even appears to be fashioned from the black stuff – to bring the weight of the 599 below 1690kg.

Stickier tyres and a faster map for the F1 sequential gearbox should bring the 0-62mph time down to some 3.5sec.

Expect the 599 GTO to receive styling tweaks over the regular model, including aero tweaks and cooling vents.

When will we see the new Ferrari 599 GTO?

Later in 2010, with a run of some 500 cars planned. Prices are tipped to top £300,000. Start saving now.

That looks great, i wonder how the front looks like. It has a big name to live up to GTO, those are some of the most memorable Ferraris.

i think they are overdoing it with the rear diffusors....

Re: new - Ferrari 599 GTO

    These diffusers are functional intouch.

My only gripe is that this is NOT really a Gran Turismo Omologato... It should be a cracking motorcar though!!!

Who knows how the interior would be....if it would be different from the simple 599??

See you at the Nurburgring!  What lap time do you expect?

I am not a Ring bloke myself mate. Way too long for meaningful comparissons. Monza, Silverstone or Hockenheim are much more representantive of the car. N'ring is down to the driver mainly.

Re: new - Ferrari 599 GTO

My thoughts about the 599 GTO, now that we have seen real pics of it:

Sorry gents, I really think less is more. The GTO just has too much of everything for that type of car. The bonnet reminds me of a Viper, there are too many slits at this car and the rear diffusor is too prominent. Whereas the black roof looks somehow cheap to me. It may be made out of thinner aluminium to save some weight (20% thinner I guess), but the matte black paint just doesn't do it for me. If anything, they should have made it from CF. Finally the wheels, they are okay, but nothing more.

So I would go for the standard 599 Fiorano in HGTE trim, which seems the best deal to me. Appropriate looks for a big GT-car like the 599 and the HGTE adds that certain something. Of course the the extra 80 horses of the GTO are tempting, but the standard 599 with its 620 hp is no slouch either. Smiley

It comes as near as possible to real road conditions, so it's more relevant for comparing road legal cars than a purpose built racetrack.

That's why manufacturers test and try to come up with good times there. Every enthusiast knows the times on NBR but few would care what a car does on Silverstone for example.

Still, NBR is too driver dependent. In any case, it's Porsche's proving ground mainly, not Ferrari' s. It's like asking me what the GT3 would do in Fiorano... who knows? Smiley

That's one of the reasons this Sport Auto magazine is considered a very good reference because all NBR lap times are done by the same driver, Von Saurma.

of course they are functional....never doubted that.

just too much for what is basically a road car.

Re: new - Ferrari 599 GTO

The black canopy top , which some on the Ferrari 458 boards are photoshopping , or as in the  599 GTO  , must bring chuckles to the Honda designers of this  late 80s design :

Re: new - Ferrari 599 GTO

^^ what a coincidence you mentioned the NSX, i just saw one yesterday in the streets and was amazed at how low and wide that thing is, i had forgotten about it.

Back on topic: I think, and its a bit of a long shot, that the 458 could look really good with a black canopy top. depending on the color of course. actually thats still a bit OT Smiley
