    Black (dark) cars and California duster

    Only had my black car a month and washed and waxed it about a week ago. Of course, when parked in the garage it was covered with a fine coat of road dust. Didn't want to have to rinse it all the time and micro rags, and such used for washing will just scoot the dust around and you end up scratching the clear coat if you did it all the time. So, I tried one of the California dusters, $10 from WalMart. Works fantastic and, for me, takes care of the dust problem. Anyone else use them?

    Only on a small area of the front fender once. It seemed to do O.K. but I'm still hesitant. (until your post) I'll try it now but I'll hunt you down if it scratches the paint!

    If using the duster (on dust not mud and sand) does anything to your paint (clearcoat actually), there is something very wrong with Porsche's painting process.

    Hi flap. I had a black vehicle here in Michigan and had the same problem which was solved with the California duster. I had the vehicle for a couple of years. I didn't notice a problem using the duster, but I didn't overdo it either.

    Got about five of them. One for the wheels alone. IMO, the thing to do is shake them often during use. Not so much to shake off dirt (it sticks to sticky fibers), but more to misalign any scratchy dirt so it gets buried in the duster fibers and can't contact the paint anymore. To "clean" blow off with compressed air if you have it.

    I dont think it maters what color you have. These are great. I do have a Black/Black car and use it all the time. I did learn don't use it if your car is even slightly wet.

    I've been using a Duster for 15 years. I used it a lot on black and never had a problem with it scratching the paint. Just use on dust and not on any dirt that has got damp for morning dew..

    They don't scratch. The only down-side is that they are saturated with an oily substance (that holds the dust) that leaves smudges randomly over the car when you use it. But it's innocuous schmutz that easily buffs off with a soft dry towel. So I usually California dust, and then lightly buff to get any of the schmutz off left by the California Duster, and then I mist a bit of Meguiars Quick-Detail on my towel and wipe the door jambs to get the dust out of there for a freshly-detailed look. I also hit the gap between my front fenders and rockers, and between my decklid and bumper cover. Nothing in this process scratches anything. Scratching is user-error, overzealous people wiping hard on a surface that's contaminated with sand/dirt. It's not your towel's fault, unless you're using some crapdillyicious bargain towel that's got nylon in it.

    To be accurate almost everything which touches your paint scratches it. Just get a piece of clear plexiglass (acrylic) and merely touch it and it's got scratches. Our paint is similar. Just avoid getting big scratches. The little ones will eventually add up, annoy you and then you decide to polish them out. Something like that.

    One man's great shine is another man's swirl nightmare. I was at the Calfornia PCA/POC Speed festival waiting for the the track tours this morning. Every car in line (except for a new red 430 and my car) had swirl marks. Cars do not have to have swirl marks even on black cars. Just be careful with what ever you do. Maybe you should try one area with the duster and see if you get any scratches.

    O.K, if you really get down to it, the only thing that is guaranteed not to leave a swirl mark is your tongue.

    I was kind of disappointed when I picked my car up from the dealership on friday. I saw a few swirl marks here and there. I understand it is a black car but with the price we paid for these cars. I think we deserve perfection!

    I use it on a black/black and it works fine

    Only problem was touched on by bossnine -- it does leave these weird smudges, which I'm assuming is because of the oil in the bristles. Hasn't scratched though. <fingers crossed>

    I use that too - Stradale I believe also uses it....love it -- cuts my drying time down by a lot, and it won't scratch as long as you keep the blade clean...I'm sure bossnine will disagree with me here..he has in the past over this wiper blade...

    I take a fine cloth and use mcguires quick detailer, on black ot gray or any other color. Take the dust off with no scratches. Since my Porsches are weekend drivers I hardly ever wash them just dust them off, vaccum and put armor all on the tires + clean teh glass. 15 minutes max.

    Good to hear that, I've been paranoid about taking a microfiber cloth/detail spray to my dusty car. I'm worried about scratching it, so I just wind up waiting till the weekend and wash the dust off

    And my car isn't even beautiful black- it's arctic silver

    I may try that tonight.....perhaps I'll try an inconspicuous location first

    I use it on Black, Silver and Grey and it does a fantastic job. I kid you not my cars see a hand car wash once every 3 months. I even spray the mcguire on the wheels and the red brake calipers and from time to time just pressure wash the wheels. Good stuff I have been using it for years.
