Help me Order my first Boxster (987)

I think that before going to finally order my Boxster on Monday, I'd like to run a couple options by the Porsche enthusiasts on this site:

    1) what is the difference between Basalt Black and Regular Black?? (Salesman is pitching regular black)

    2) Please rate in order of importance the following options:

    - Bose
    - Active Suspension (PASM) with 6 shifter
    - Chrono pack
    - Sport leather seats
    - Sports Stearing
    - Auto climate
    - Xenon
    - 18" Boxster S wheels

    Much appreciated folks.

Re: Help me Order my first Boxster (987)

Checkout some of the previous threads.

    for example >here<

I think a fair thing to say would be:

Colours - You have to go see as many examples of colours in the showroom as you can. Looking at photos, or samples just isn't enough. Choose the colour combination that YOU like.

Spec - The one thing that most people would agree on is to go for the 3.2 S over the 2.7 if you can stretch to it. Other than that it's a case of whatever is most important to YOU. Past threads have gone into the pros and cons of each. You can't rate them in order of importance.

Oh and Basalt black is a metallic finish and costs more than the basic black, which is a flat colour. As a general rule, black can be harder to keep 'clean' than a silver colour, but can look very nice. Also, that the side vents are silver whatever colour you get.

Re: Help me Order my first Boxster (987)

I do prefer basalt to standard black, but whether it's worth the extra $s is another question. As for the other options, I'd say that 18" wheels are a necessity - 17s just look too small (although the design is nicer). You don't need PASM with the 18" wheels. I've got auto climate, but I think it's a bit of a waste of time. When the top is down, I alter the fan settings manually so the auto bit is of no use. It only makes a difference with the top up. In the UK though it is seen as a must have for resale purposes.

If I was ordering again, I would go for the sports steering wheel and seats, as they are relatively inexpensive options and definitely improve the driving experience. It's just a pity I didn't get chance to try them out before having to spec my car. Xenons and Bose are both expensive options. I'd go for the Xenons over the Bose, as the Boxster engine makes the best sound of all and you won't care about your stereo.

Re: Help me Order my first Boxster (987)

Although I have yet to receive my car FOGMA, in large part the two posts cover most of my thoughts when I specced my car in March.

For me I'd vote YES to:
18" wheels (more appropriate to the car I think)
sports steering wheel (functional and better styled)
sport seats - but ONLY if you fit well in them

others I'm ambivalent about, especially the sports chrono thing, it just seems like a gimmick to me

Very different kinfs of options but in the order of importance, although highly sugestive depending on what you intend to do with the car:
    - PASM with 6 speeds
    - 18in wheels
    - Xenon
    - Chrono pack
    - Auto climate control
    - Bose
    - Sports leather seats
    - Sport steering

Re: Help me Order my first Boxster (987)

    In Canada?

Get the heated seats for colder days

Re: Help me Order my first Boxster (987)

Loading a 2.7 with PASM etc gets you closer to the base price of a 3.2 . Maybe it's worth a thought to get a 3.2, with minimal options, e.g. heated seats, sports steering wheel, sports seats (have to try for fit!) or electronic seats (if changing drivers frequently), windshield. It comes with 18" wheels already. You can order Bose if you absolutely have to have music in the car. PASM/sports chrono are nice for track driving but I find I would not be unhappy without them on the standard roads here in Britain... the car just handles that good. Auto climate is not that big of a deal either in my opinion.

    Enjoy!

I totally agree. I was considering a 2.7 with a lot of the options that were standard on the S anyway. Worked out that it narrowed the cost gap between the two by about half. And for resale, you lose a lot of the cost of the options anyway, so it's often better to get the better specced standard car.

Re: Help me Order my first Boxster (987)

The issue is that I actually think the dealer has a car in particular to pitch that has all of the mentioned optioned.....and will propose it at a discounted price...

In that case, buying a 3.2 will still be substantially more expenseive. I will still try doing that though. Thank you for the advise!

Re: Help me Order my first Boxster (987)

Ok you guys,..... you have got me thinking...I am currently in the midst of eating my brains out.....

Dealer offers me a big discount on all of the above options (7% discount on overall price)....so i pay slightly more than a regularly equipet Boxster......

Knowing this, do you still think i should do the jump to an S??

Have you driven both? Which did you prefer?

That's a tempting deal though. How long are you going to keep the car?

Re: Help me Order my first Boxster (987)

I would rather pay 7% more and get a S!

Possibly depends on your budget. If your budget supports buying a basic 3.2, it's certainly worth test driving both before making a decision, and then buying what you have more fun with.

I have never driven a 2.7 Boxster and only had my car for a few weeks. When I was in the testing phase I tried a used 996 and the 987 Boxster S. After the test drive I ordered a 987S with few options. So there are no expert level insights to be had from my side, only the fact that I am happy with my S so far. I use it both as a daily commuter and a weekend fun ride.

Re: Help me Order my first Boxster (987)

7% is a nice discount. I found the boxster to be an excellent car. I wanted the 18's, the slightly better sound, and the 6-speed. This may sound goofy but I hate look of the boxster exhaust. I like the dual look much much more. Based on those options the cost of the S isn't much higher. I hate the chrono, I read it's not all that handy at the track. I got the xenon's because Phx is hot and there is lots of night driving with the top down. I thought the S had a bit more bottom-end torque but I think both are tons of fun. That's a pretty decked out boxster but as someone mentioned if you are concerned about trade-in that's where you'll take your hit.

If you can get Basalt instead of regular Black go for it. The Basalt looks a little metallic and it will hide any scuffs better.

Oh the dealer should give you the discount on any car you choose if he really wants your business. I got between 4% and 5% and the dealer said any car - order or spec.

Re: Help me Order my first Boxster (987)

Bose, 18" wheels, Wind def, Full leather if u can and auto air con! Seal grey is my choice but GT and black are nice!
