Sport chrono + PSE question please

I like the growl of the PSE when you start the car with a cold engine, but when I turn off the ignition with the sport function ON and lock the car and then turn it back on again, the sport button is OFF.
Is there a way to change manually, or can the dealer do something about this or tough luck?
    Thanks.

Re: Sport chrono + PSE question please

AS i understand it, it is pretty much tough luck. But I soon got used to pressing the button as part of my starting sequence.

Re: Sport chrono + PSE question please

if you like the sound of the start, you won't need to hvae the sports button turned on when you start the engine. It sounds like that after you leave the car for a while.

I assume that that is a safety feature that cannot be changed. Probably to avoid accidents of drivers taking off in a hurry in rain or snow who forgot to switch back to Sport off setting.

Re: Sport chrono + PSE question please

There are several ways to disable the quiet mode on the PSE. The easiest way is to disconnect the vacuum actuated switch which will accomplish what you want. The downside is you cannot switch back to quiet mode. There is another method where an additional switch is installed in/under the dash that will allow you to switch back to quiet mode.

Unfortunately I have not found a hack to keep sport mode engaged. The difference in throttle response is driving me crazy. If anything it is a safety issue to have it disengage after shut down.

The input to the switch from the DME is one way so disconnecting it does not present any problems.

See this thread for the switch location: Disconnect PSE Switch

Re: Sport chrono + PSE question please

Does that mean that you no longer have use of the sport mode? Or does that mean that the only way to turn on the PSE is with the sport mode on?

    Thanks for the replies guys.
I should have checked the manual actually, it does say in it that the sport function is disabled when one switches the ignition off.
Persuader, do you press the sport button before firing up the engine or just after? Thanks.

Re: Sport chrono + PSE question please

Actually PSE is on when you switch the ignition on, regardless of 'Sport' mode or not. Since there is no pressure in the system to hold the PSE valves closed they are in default open position (PSE on) when the engine starts. Then the pressure builds up and the exhaust goes quiet (PSE off). That is why you first hear the deep growl when the engine is started.

However, the mechanics at your dealer can change the DME setting to have the car in 'Sport' mode when the ignition is switched on. Then the PSE valves are kept open and it does not go quiet.

In addition you could bypass the PSE control by installing a switch between the DME and the electrical connector on the vacuum hose. Then you can start the car in 'Normal' mode, but with PSE kept on, or start the car in 'Normal' mode, but with PSE kept off, or in 'Sport' mode with PSE kept on

PM me if you need more details.

Thanks for those clarification Bluelines, it makes sense to me as the car sounds particularly loud when I turn it on.
I'm not gonna mess around with the DME for now. I'll leave it like that.
PSE works in mysterious ways, it is no only speed dependant, that is for sure, as when I accelerate gently, it stays on all the time even around 50kmh. It must be speed, rev and throttle input dependant I guess hence the direct connection to DME.
I can't do the RC mod as they is no plug to unplug in the X51 engine bay anyway.

Just before I fire it up unless i've forgotten then I do it straight after. Also, that was a great point by Bluelines, always wondered why PSE sounded on momentarily when starting even if I had forgotten to switch it on.
Still think it's daft that on Sports Chrono models like ours that you have to have the reduced PSM to have PSE on unlike those that don't have Sports Chrono. I removed Brown plug for a while so PSE on all the time but soon put it back cause I like the option of not having PSE on sometimes.

Sorry, I didn't know you have an X51 optioned car. There are several people who are trying to find an X51 work around. I'm sure it won't be long before someone on one of the various Porsche boards posts an X51 hack.

Porsche should have made it an option in the PCM/SCP "Individual Memory". Just do what other's have done. Install a separate switch under the dash to control the PSE vacuum switch.

Do you have a list of all the DME configurable set-up options that are available? TIA
