It's indeed due to new EU safety regulations. For those who wonder what the EU bureaucrats are doing for our tax Euro Euro you may have a look here

BTW there is another regulation regarding pedestrian's safety in case of a front collision, which will have a far bigger impact on car design (compared to the Dumbo Ear regulation): in future there must be a certain distance between the front-hood and "hard parts" (read: engine).
Fortunately our beloved rear/mid-engined Porsches won't come with a truck-ish front
Here is an example (new C-Class), where you can see how the grill is artificially extended into the hood in order to camo the high engine hood. Of course it also has the Dumbo Ears
